Proteus is a New Olympian, and shape-shifting psychopath.

History
Proteus has attempted many times to wreak havoc on New Olympus and escape into the outside world, presumably to create more trouble there for his own amusement. During his (at this time of writing) penultimate attempt to escape New Olympus, he murdered Taurus's Father, who was then Chief of Security. Afterwards, he was locked up in a force field cell in New Olympus's prison.

When Goliath, Elisa, Angela, and Bronx came to New Olympus on the Avalon World Tour, Proteus decided to take advantage of their arrival to make a fresh escape. After Elisa was locked up by Taurus, Proteus first masqueraded as her to trick Goliath into freeing him, and then, after subduing Goliath and imprisoning him in his cell, shape-shifted into Goliath to break Elisa out, hoping to trick her into leading him back to the skiff. First, however, he decided to enter the Columnadium and overload the power supply, which would have destroyed New Olympus. Fortunately, Elisa (who had by now deduced Proteus' true identity) and Taurus arrived in time to foil his scheme and overpower him. Proteus is currently back in prison again. ("The New Olympians")

Characteristics
Proteus is a shape-shifter, who can mimic any living thing, even distinct individuals, such as Goliath, Elisa, and Taurus. His shape-shifting presumably does not give him the full nature of what he masquerades as, however, for when he took on the form of Goliath, he did not undergo stone sleep in the daytime. In addition, it doesn't give him any insight into the mannerisms and personality of those he poses as; he would actually have to get to know the target better as anyone else would.

By nature, he is thoroughly evil and corrupt, delighting in deceit, psychological torture (he likes to taunt Taurus by shape-shifting into the form of his father), and senseless destruction.
Apocrypha
The Goliath Chronicles
Proteus escapes New Olympus and ends up in Manhattan to seek revenge on both Goliath and Elisa. He starts by posing as Goliath and prevents a theft in a dangerous manner. Afterwards, he poses as Elisa to trap and capture Goliath. He is eventually caught and defeated by Goliath, Elisa, Angela, and Hudson along with Taurus. ("Seeing Isn't Believing")

Real World Background
Proteus is named after a minor sea-god in Greek mythology, who looked after seals and served as their herdsman. Like the Proteus of Gargoyles, he was a famous shape-shifter, although much more benevolent by nature; he was also very wise, and could even foresee the future, although he would only reveal what he knew to somebody who had overpowered him. For example, as recounted in Book Four of Homer's Odyssey, when King Menelaus of Sparta and his followers were shipwrecked off the coast of Egypt on their way home from the Trojan War, they learned that in order to discover how to return to Greece, they must capture Proteus and discover what they needed to know from him. Menelaus wrestled with Proteus, who shifted his shape into many forms in an effort to escape; Menelaus persisted, however, and at last Proteus gave him the information that he needed to know.

William Shakespeare named one of the leads of his comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona after Proteus; this Proteus more closely resembled the Proteus of Gargoyles in character, being a conniving schemer who even betrays his best friend, Valentine, and deserts his original girl-friend, Julia, after being smitten with Sylvia (whom Valentine is wooing). He repents of his evil ways at the end, however (unlike the Proteus of Gargoyles).

Anubis is a Child of Oberon. He was worshipped in ancient Egypt as a god of death, the afterlife, and embalming.

History
In 995, Anubis was banished from Avalon alongside the rest of the Third Race by Oberon in order to learn humility.

In 1995, Xanatos sent the Emir and the Pack (by this time Jackal, Hyena, Wolf, and Coyote 3.0) to Egypt, to summon up Anubis in a secret underground chamber below the Sphinx and somehow force him to make Xanatos immortal. The Emir summoned Anubis and magically held him prisoner, but for his own purposes rather than Xanatos'; he wanted the jackal-god to restore his dead son to life. When Anubis refused, the Emir decided to use the Scroll of Thoth to make himself an avatar of the death-god, so that he could use Anubis' powers to resurrect his son himself. However, Jackal, who had become intrigued by Anubis, deliberately stepped in the way of the spell so that he himself could become an avatar of Anubis. Drunk with his new-found powers, he planned to use them to wipe out all life on the planet, but the Emir (with some prodding by Goliath) came to his senses in time, and used the Scroll of Thoth again to make himself Anubis' avatar. Undoing what damage caused by Jackal that he could, the Emir then sealed off the underground chamber so that nobody could ever summon Anubis again. ("Grief")

Anubis eventually attended the Gathering on Avalon. ("The Gathering" Part One)

Characteristics
Anubis is a "death-god", but a responsible one. He takes his powers seriously, viewing them as part of the natural balance and not to be used lightly. In particular, he refuses to bring people back to life (such as the Emir's son), because he feels that it would be favoritism. (It is noteworthy that when the Emir was serving as Anubis' avatar, he could undo Jackal's artificial aging of Goliath, Elisa, Angela, and Bronx, and rejuvenation of Hyena and Wolf, but could not or would not restore what Jackal had actually destroyed.) He is so strongly connected with death, in fact, that while he was magically imprisoned by the Emir, nobody on Earth was able to die.

Anubis generally appears in the form of a man in ancient Egyptian garb with a jackal's head.
Real World Background
Anubis is the Greek rendering of the Egyptian name Inpw, which may have been pronounced something like Anupu or Ienpu.

In ancient Egyptian religion, Anubis was a guardian and judge of the dead, and the god of embalming. In the earliest days of ancient Egypt, he was perhaps the most important god of the dead. Later on, as the worship of Osiris became increasingly prominent, Anubis was reduced in stature, and Osiris replaced him as the main Egyptian death-god. As per Gargoyles, he was usually portrayed as a man with a black jackal's head, but could also be depicted in fully jackal form.

According to mythology, Anubis invented the art of embalming, a ritual which helped ensure a soul's continued existence in the afterlife. He embalmed Osiris himself, when that god was slain by his brother Seth. Anubis also had the role of helping to judge the souls brought before Osiris after their deaths. He would balance each soul's heart on a pair of scales against the Feather of Justice. If the heart weighed the same as the Feather, that soul would be admitted to the paradise ruled over by Osiris, but if it was heavier (weighed down with sin), the soul would be devoured by the monstrous Ammut. The ancient Greeks identified Anubis with Hermes, who was considered the guide of dead souls.

Hudson was a former leader of the Wyvern Clan, and is now the oldest member and mentor-figure of the Manhattan Clan.

History
("Once Upon A Time There Were Three Brothers...")

In many ways, he was much more intelligent than Prince Malcolm was. He correctly saw the danger in Malcolm using gargoyles as threats to scare the young Princess Katharine into good behavior (the danger that was fulfilled by her attitude towards gargoyles up to the Wyvern Massacre, which even helped lead to it), and he also recognized the treasonous schemes of the Archmage long before Malcolm saw them - sensing them as early as 975, in fact. By 984, he had already recognized Goliath's worth, and appointed the young gargoyle warrior his second-in-command.

In 984, Hudson was blinded in one eye during a battle with the Archmage (the same battle that resulted in the evil sorcerer falling into a chasm to - so everyone thought at the time - his demise). Convinced that this condition and his age made him no longer able to lead, he stepped down as leader in favor of Goliath. Goliath insisted on keeping Hudson on, however, as an adviser, having always recognized that the older gargoyle’s experience and wisdom is what made him a good leader for so many years. ("Long Way to Morning")

Hudson survived the Wyvern Massacre in 994 because Goliath took him on his pursuit of the Vikings, but was afterwards frozen in stone sleep by the Magus for the next thousand years. Like the other gargoyles, he was awakened from his stone sleep when Xanatos moved Castle Wyvern to the top of the Eyrie Building (and becoming the oldest living gargoyle in history). ("Awakening: Part One", "Awakening: Part Two") During this time after the massacre, Hudson served unofficially as second in command of the survivors, but eventually insisted that not only would it not be proper for him to officially be second to his own former second, it would be more suitable for one of the younger Trio be promoted to that position. ("Upgrade")

Hudson is semi-retired now, thanks to his age and partial blindness. He feels that he's past his prime, and prefers to stay home (whether Castle Wyvern or the Clock Tower) while the rest of the clan is out on patrol, for the purpose of guarding it. (Bronx, with whom Hudson has a strong rapport, usually stays with him).

However, he can still be a formidable warrior when the occasion demands it, and once defended a wounded Goliath very effectively against Demona, holding her off long enough for the sun to rise and heal his leader. ("Long Way to Morning") He also demonstrated his resourcefulness in rescuing himself from Xanatos when the latter captured him to use as a guinea pig for the Cauldron of Life. ("The Price")

Unlike the trio, Hudson is not particularly enthusiastic about the modern world. He feels lost and confused in it, all too aware of the dramatic changes that have taken place in the last thousand years, particularly in the realm of technology, and knows in his heart that he's too old and set in his ways to be able to adjust well to it as the other clan members have. However, he does enjoy one modern-day invention: television. He likes to settle down in an easy chair and watch it while the rest of the clan is out on patrol.

Like Broadway, Hudson was originally illiterate upon his awakening in Manhattan - and, unlike Broadway, ashamed of it; he covered it up, in fact, because of this. He finally revealed this secret to the blind author Jeffrey Robbins, whom he met when he was washed along the shore near Robbins' house during the fight for the Scrolls of Merlin. Robbins assured him that it was not shameful to be illiterate, but only to stay that way, and offered to teach him how to read. He and Robbins also became good friends. ("A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time") After this, Hudson undertook reading lessons with Broadway, practicing with the newspaper. ("High Noon") On Halloween 1996, Hudson finally revealed to Robbins the fact that he was a gargoyle, a fact that Robbins had already figured out. ("Bash")

In November of 1996, Hudson got the rare opportunity to travel abroad when he and Lexington elected to aid Macbeth in protecting the Stone of Destiny during its transport from Westminster Abbey in London to Scotland. When first waking up in London, Hudson experienced the gargoyle version of jet-lag ("The Rock"). While there, Hudson met Griff once again, along with two other members of the London Clan and stayed at the clan's home at Knight's Spur. Later, Hudson and the other gargoyles were attacked at Westminster Abbey by Coldsteel and Coyote 5.0, who were working under Xanatos' orders. Coldsteel nearly succeeded in ripping Hudson's arm off with his tentacles, but was thankfully stopped in time by Coldstone and Coldfire. ("Rock & Roll") After the Stone of Destiny adventure, Hudson and Lexington remained at Knight's Spur for a while, returning to the Eyrie Building with Coldstone and Coldfire in early 1997 - just in time to meet Brooklyn, newly returned from his Timedancing, and his family. ("Phoenix")

Future Tense
By the time Goliath arrived in Puck's "Future Tense" illusion, Hudson was already dead, and a life-sized bronze statue had been built as a memorial. He had perished years ago in single combat with Xanatos, although unbeknownst to all but Lexington, he managed to take Xanatos with him.

Characteristics
Hudson is a portly old gargoyle, with tan-colored skin, ruddy orange wings, and white hair and beard. His most distinguishing feature, beyond these, is his blind left eye. He has three small horns on each side of his forehead. He wears a tough leather jerkin and trousers in addition to the loincloth more typical of his clan, and carries a sword that he won during his attack on the Vikings' camp in 994. (Hudson uses the sword because he feels that, with his strength failing as he ages, he needs some sort of human weapon to help even things out for him.) Alone of the Manhattan Clan, he speaks with a Scottish accent.

Despite his clear gargoyle heritage and pride, Hudson does not enjoy gallivanting about on wild adventures, as he much prefers to remain home in an old recliner and watch television shows such as The Pack, Celebrity Hockey and Nightwatch. Greg Weisman explained that "Hudson hates spunk."

Ironically, Hudson was the first member of the Wyvern Clan to take on a name in the 20th century, although he considered the concept of names nothing more than a peculiar human custom. He named himself after the Hudson River, after Elisa cited it to him as an example of how even geographical features have names. Voice Actor: Ed Asner

Hudson evolved from a character in the comedy development called "Ralph". Ralph was often the oldest gargoyle in the cast and much preferred staying at home with the TV and other comforts of modern living to actually going out. In the earliest character drafts, he was given the last name "Fullmoon" and described as " Al Bundy but with worse luck." He was set up as a contrast with Alice Fullmoon, an eternal optimist. When he was moved into the action-drama pitch, other names considered for him included "Rolf" and "Rock". Greg Weisman would ultimately model Hudson after Lou Grant in his character description, with Ed Asner already in mind as a voice actor. In 1993, some last minute alternative names included "Rockefeller", "Roosevelt", "Bowery", and "Harlem". Avalon Clan is a gargoyle clan that resides on the mystic island of Avalon.

History
The Avalon Clan has its beginnings with the original Wyvern Clan. After the Magus agreed to cast upon Goliath the same spell of sleep that he had cast upon the surviving members of the Wyvern Clan, he and Princess Katharine vowed to care for the eggs of the clan. Katharine, along with the Magus, and Tom, now nicknamed "Guardian of the Eggs," set off for her Uncle, King Kenneth's castle. They arrived there in 995 but were promptly driven off by a coup staged by Lord Constantine. The Magus took them to Avalon, where (due to the differences in the passage of time) "The Eggs" hatched in 1058 and grew up in peace and isolation. Many, if not most, of the hatchlings were named after angels, while each of the beasts were named after warriors. This raised his reputation as a leader among the children to near legendary status. ("Awakening: Part Two", "Avalon" Part One, "Avalon" Part Two)

In late 1995, the Enhanced Archmage attacked the clan, injuring many members and threatening to destroy them all. Tom brought Goliath, Elisa and Bronx to the island to help the Clan defeat the Archmage and his allies, the Weird Sisters, as well as his enslaved "troops" Macbeth and Demona. With the help of King Arthur, the Clan was able to win the battle and peace on the island was restored.
Six months later, though about a week had passed on Avalon, Oberon and Titania returned to reclaim the island. Oberon gave the Clan the choice to either leave or be destroyed, but with Titania's aid the Clan not only was given a third option, to defeat Oberon in a hunt, but were also given the clue to defeat Oberon. In the end, though they could have killed Oberon, Tom chose not to and because of this generosity Oberon allowed the Clan to remain and the island, and furthermore they became his Honor Guard, immune from his magic.
Avalon is the island home of Oberon's Children.

History
Avalon was ruled over first by Queen Mab, then following her overthrow, by her son Oberon, who still rules there today.

In the early 6th century, the wounded King Arthur was admitted to Avalon for healing, and placed in an enchanted sleep within the Hollow Hill.

In 995, Oberon, angered at his Children's scorn and contempt for mortals, and particularly that displayed by Titania, banished the entire Third Race from Avalon for a thousand years, leaving the Weird Sisters behind to bar the entrance on a floating barge nearby. Shortly afterwards, Princess Katharine, the Magus, and Tom fled to Avalon with the eggs following Constantine III's usurpation of the Scottish throne. After the Magus defeated the Weird Sisters, the three refugees settled on Avalon with the eggs, and lived there contentedly (more or less) for the next thousand years. ("Avalon" Part One)

In 1995, the Archmage decided to conquer Avalon, to use it as his base of operations for waging war upon the human world. He joined forces with the Weird Sisters, Demona, and Macbeth to attack the Avalon Clan and destroy it. The Avalon clan, aided by Goliath, Elisa, Bronx, and King Arthur (whom Elisa awakened from his sleep), defended its home against the evil sorcerer and his followers, and finally won. ("Avalon" Part Two, "Avalon" Part Three)

Not long afterwards, Oberon and Titania returned to Avalon, and learned about the Avalon clan from the Weird Sisters. Oberon wanted to banish them from the island, but the Avalon clan created an iron bell and used it to defeat him, after which Princess Katharine persuaded him to let them stay. Oberon not only granted them permission to do so, but even made the Avalon gargoyles his guard of honor . ("Ill Met By Moonlight") Afterwards, he held the Gathering, bringing home all of the Third Race (except for Puck, in the end); currently, the Fair Folk are assembled upon Avalon. ("The Gathering" Part One)

Characteristics
Avalon cannot be found on a map of the world; it is reachable only by magic. The usual procedure for entering Avalon for mortals is to recite the following Latin incantation while upon a body of water (which can range in size from the sea to a large washbasin):

:Vocate venti fortunate,
:ex ricae Oberonis,
:et hic navis frugum regate,
:ad orae Avalonis

Oberon's Children, on the other hand, can presumably come and go through their innate abilities, without needing water nearby. Leaving Avalon is somewhat trickier; it does not send you to where you wish to go, but to where you need to be (hence the Avalon World Tour that Goliath, Elisa, Angela, and Bronx involuntarily embarked upon after leaving the enchanted island). ("Avalon" Part Three)

Avalon is, in a sense, solidified magic, and an experienced human wizard can actually tap into that magic, as the Magus did during his battle with the Weird Sisters; it is not easy to do, however, and even cost the Magus his life. While faerie magic is permitted in Avalon, human magic (particularly that coming from artifacts such as the Grimorum Arcanorum) is not. (The Archmage did temporarily evade this proscription by eating the Grimorum, but he paid a fatal price for it in the end.) ("Avalon" Part Two)

Because of its magical nature, time passes slower on Avalon; for every hour spent there, one day goes by in the outside world (or in other words, 24 times slower then normal time). It is also eternal summer there (by Oberon's decree), and prior to leaving Angela claimed she had never seen ice or snow. ("Avalon" Part One, "Shadows of the Past", "Eye of the Storm")

Avalon has a few important landmarks: the palace where Oberon and Titania live (which is also the home for the Avalon Clan), the Hollow Hill where King Arthur slept (and where the Magus has now been laid to rest), a volcano, and grotto which served as the Archmage's headquarters during his invasion of Avalon. An apple orchard stands in the palace grounds. The apples are believed to be native to the island. Jade and Turquesa have also transplanted various rare plants brought from Guatemala (which are said to be flourishing). ("The Green")

The relationship between Avalon and Oberon is uncertain. On the one hand, Oberon can command the island to do his bidding, ordering even the rocks to throw themselves at intruders. On the other hand, Avalon sent Goliath and his companions to Manhattan at the end of the World Tour to foil Oberon's plan to abduct the infant Alexander. ("Ill Met By Moonlight", "The Gathering" Part One)

Time differential
On Avalon:

* One day equals 24 days in the outside world
* 30 days equals 720 days (or nearly two years)
* One year equals 24 years
* 41.6 years equals 1,000 years
* 100 years equals 2,400 years

Real World Background
Avalon emerges in Arthurian legend as a mysterious enchanted island, associated with the faerie-folk, to which King Arthur was taken after his final battle at Camlann. Its earliest known mention comes from Geoffrey of Monmouth in his History of the Kings of Britain, where it is mentioned as being the place where Excalibur was forged, and to which Arthur was taken after his final battle. In his The Life of Merlin, a sort of sequel to his better-known History, he gives a more detailed description of Avalon as a magical island, to which Merlin and the legendary Welsh bard Taliesin took the wounded Arthur, where Morgan le Fay - portrayed here as a benevolent figure - received him and tended him.

Avalon seems to have developed from the legends about paradisaical islands in Celtic mythology; it is worth noting that the Welsh form of its name is "Ynys Avallach" or "The Isle of Avallach", Avallach being a mysterious otherworldly figure in Welsh myth, portrayed as Morgan le Fay's father. However, its name also seems to be derived from "apple", fitting in with the fact that apples were commonly found in the magical islands of Celtic myth. The Avalon of Gargoyles likewise contains an apple orchard in the grounds of Oberon’s palace.

While the Arthurian legends often interpreted Avalon in much the same light that Gargoyles did, as a remote enchanted island, a different view of Avalon emerged in 1190, at Glastonbury Abbey in Somerset. Some of the monks of Glastonbury reported discovering the grave of King Arthur within the Abbey, marked by a lead cross which described Arthur as being buried in "the Isle of Avalon". This suggested that Avalon was merely an old-fashioned name for Glastonbury and not a magical island after all. This possibility was assisted by the fact that Glastonbury was a marshy region in the Dark Ages and could have been an island at one point, and that it does have a reputation for otherworldliness. In the Gargoyles Universe, however, Avalon and Glastonbury are clearly not identical.

After this discovery of "Arthur's tomb" (historians and archaeologists remain divided as to how genuine this discovery actually was), a different trend concerning Arthur's fate emerges in the writings about him; while some Arthurian romancers continued to claim that Arthur did not die but was taken away to Avalon, others, such as the anonymous author of the alliterative Morte Arthure, hold that he did indeed die and that Avalon and Glastonbury were one and the same. Sir Thomas Malory, in his Le Morte d'Arthur, was ambivalent, portraying Sir Bedivere discovering a tomb believed to be Arthur's at Glastonbury, but also stating that many people still believe that Arthur is not dead and will someday return (Malory himself did not believe this). Alfred Lord Tennyson, in his Idylls of the King, definitely held for the picture of Avalon as a magical island rather than a real-world locale, and had Arthur describe it in "The Passing of Arthur" as a place "Where falls not hail, or rain, or any snow,/ Nor ever wind blows loudly; but it lies/ Deep-meadow'd, happy, fair with orchard lawns/ And bowery hollows crown'd with summer sea". This description undoubtedly helped influence the depiction of Avalon in Gargoyles as a place of eternal summer - alongside the description of Celtic paradises in legend, which were sometimes even known as the "Summer Country" or the "Region of the Summer Stars".

Avalon's different time scale from the outside world also has roots in traditional legends about the faerie-folk. It was said about Faerie that time passed by much more slowly there, and that one could spend only a short time in that place and return to the human world to discover that years or even centuries had gone by in the meantime. However, visitors to Faerie would generally age rapidly to match the passage of time in their absence from the mortal world, a fate which fortunately did not befall Angela or Tom when they left Avalon.
Gargoyles are one of the Three Races on Earth.

History
The exact origins of gargoyles lie so far back in the mists of time that we have no certain details as to how they came about. Gargoyles are, however, younger than the extinct Lost Race.

Few humans were as willing to accept gargoyles as these two legendary heroes had been.

And so, by the dawn of the High Middle Ages in the 11th century, gargoyles had become so rare that humans believed them to be extinct (and few mourned that). Indeed, in Europe the 11th century saw the end of one of the last alliances between humans and gargoyles, that formed between King Macbeth of Scotland (1040-1057) and Demona, which ended in 1057 when Demona betrayed Macbeth to the forces of Malcolm Canmore, bringing about the destruction of Demona's Clan as well as Macbeth's downfall. The Age of Gargoyles was at an end.

In 1996, humanity as a whole suddenly became aware of the existence of living gargoyles once again when Goliath and the Manhattan Clan were revealed to the public in New York City by the Hunters, and most of them were terrified. Most of the human citizens of New York called out for the gargoyles to be destroyed or captured and locked away, and some of them even joined an organization of gargoyle-hunters called Quarrymen.

Biology
Gargoyles are neither mammals, nor reptiles, nor birds. They are part of a biological class called gargates. The only other known species in this group is the gargoyle beasts, which were domesticated by gargoyles as companions millennia ago.

The most prominent biological feature of gargoyles is that they turn to "stone" in the daytime. This trait of theirs, known as "stone sleep," is dealt with in greater detail in a separate entry; suffice it to say that at sunrise gargoyles (and gargoyle beasts) turn to stone and remain that way until sunset. During this time, gargoyles sleep and dream, injuries sustained during the night heal, and they possibly absorb thermal energy from the sun's rays that gives them most of their energy. Doctor Sevarius has hypothesized that without this last feature, a gargoyle would have to eat the equivalent of three cows a night in order to get airborne. Of course, it should be noted that the Sevarius was probably basing his theory on the assumption that gargoyles use their wings for flight. Since they can only glide, the need for this much energy (either from the sun or food) seems unnecessary.

Gargoyles have a greater resistance to the cold than humans do, possibly due to a thicker skin, or hide. Gargoyles are probably at least partly warm-blooded, especially considering their activity level in cold weather. However, because they obtain most of their energy from heat and sunlight during their sleep, they could be considered partially cold-blooded as well.

Breeding and Ageing
Like most animals, but unlike most mammals, they lay eggs. Female gargoyles nurse their young with breastmilk, however. For more information on gargoyle reproduction see this entry.

Gargoyles do not age during their stone sleep, so they age only half as quickly as humans do. Thus, a 30-year-old gargoyle would be biologically equivalent to a 15-year-old human.

As a gargoyle gets older, healing from stone sleep becomes more difficult and slower, especially if an injury sustained is severe enough (such as Hudson being blinded in one eye when fighting the Archmage).

Appearance
Gargoyles' appearance varies from clan to clan, and even gargoyles within the same clan look very different, and are usually easily told apart. Some sort of overall gargoyle anatomical norm does seem to exist, however, judging from the Scottish, Guatemalan, and Japanese clans. And many gargoyles depart from this "norm" dramatically. The London gargoyles, for example, resemble heraldic animals with feathered wings, and Zafiro of the Mayan Clan looks very much like a winged serpent, with no visible (external) hind legs.

Besides their shared trait of stone sleep, the most prominent gargoyle feature is the number of limbs they possess. Gargoyles are the only (living) vertebrates with more than four limbs. There are individuals like Zafiro who appear to have only four limbs. Gargoyles are bipedal, although they can easily run on all fours if they need to, and more or less humanoid in shape. Their wings are usually leathery, most commonly bat-like with the digits dividing the wing membrane into multiple segments, but sometimes pterodactyl-like with one continuous membrane and the digits forming a small hand atop the wing (as with Brooklyn) or web-like in the manner of a flying squirrel (as with Lexington). However, most of the gargoyles in the London Clan, and some members of the Mayan Clan, have covering on their wings that resembles feathers.

Some gargoyles have human-like faces, such as Goliath, Demona, and Angela, while others have long snouts or beaks such as Brooklyn, and still others seem to have a sort of rounded muzzle, more simian in appearance like Broadway or Lexington. Some gargoyles have hair, while others, such as Lexington and Broadway, are bald. Hairlessness or thin hair seems to hold no significant influence on Gargoyle society or relations. Hudson's hair is gray and thinner, and has likely (if Brooklyn is any indication) always been gray. Hudson is the only living gargoyle of the Wyvern clan to exhibit facial hair, so body-hair may not be common amongst gargoyles. None of the gargoyles have been seen to shave, or indeed even groom, so the growth may take a tremendous amount of time and effort on their part.

Most if not all gargoyles have some sort of brow-ridge above the eyes in place of eyebrows, and/or horns upon their foreheads. These seem to be genetic, but they also suggest a certain amount of individual distinction. No two gargoyles have identical brow-ridges, and the ridges move with their expression, which seems to suggest they are not bone, or are covered in thick soft tissue.

Characteristics
Gargoyle skin color varies noticeably within a clan; for example, Goliath and Angela are both lavender, Demona sky-blue, Hudson a tan color, Brooklyn red, Lexington a sort of khaki, and Broadway turquoise. Other observed colors are teal, green, golden, tawny, orange, pink, white, pale green, and grey. Hair may be brown, white, black, yellow, or red.

All gargoyles, even web-winged types like Lexington, possess a complicated and highly refined set of additional musculature and skeletal structures above what humans identify as lateral muscles on their dorsal (back) side allowing use of their powerful wings. Their tails are prehensile, they possess enlarged canines like those of big cats, and typically have four digits adorning each limb (including their wings), though this too seems to have a degree of variance. Their major hinge joints often feature a type of spike or horn-like growth, particularly protruding from their elbows and knees, and some gargoyles' wings are adorned with these bony ornaments.

Gargoyles' arms end in hands with three clawed fingers and a fully opposable clawed thumb. Their legs are digitigrade, with hip, knee, and ankle joints fully flexible like that of a cat; they walk upright on their toes. Gargoyles refer to their feet and hands as "talons," and accurately so considering the strength they possess. In the case of their feet, they are roughly talon shaped, with three arched toes each ending in a powerful claw, and a fourth toe on each heel that points backward like that of a bird of prey, perhaps in order to provide the gargoyles with superior grip and balance even in the precarious environs of their preferred habitats.

Their wings typically feature the same configuration as their hands, with the phalanges/fingers in the wings operating similar to that of large bats, with a thumb-like structure they use to "cape" their wings, or to grip at a rough surface. Some gargoyles, such as Lexington, have no digits in the wing limb, while others, like Brooklyn, have only one digit to support the wing membrane while the others stick out somewhat like fingers of the hand. Further variances exist between particular individual gargoyles, but physical characteristics tend to share some commonality across individuals from the same clan.

Strength, Traits, and Abilities
Gargoyles seem to be omnivorous, but like some humans they prefer a general diet focusing on meat or fish as a primary food source. It can only be inferred from their evidence and physical appearance that gargoyles are descendants of a highly efficient, specialized group of predators. Hunting from the air would require superb eyesight (quite possibly enhanced by whatever biochemical reaction causes the glow of their eyes), sophisticated reaction times, and excellent hearing. Visual evidence suggests these attributes as well; their ears are pointed and seem to be deeper than human or simian ears, giving them greater reception of noise. Goliath demonstrates his attenuation to his senses during his first trip through Central Park with Elisa, when he heard the subtle movements of a highly trained, highly coordinated group of special-operations mercenaries, clues that even Elisa with her police background missed.

Gargoyles also seem to have a highly developed sense of smell, often using it to verify an unknown or to initially inspect an area, as Brooklyn did when first meeting Elisa; he gave two quick sniffs and then immediately questioned Goliath as to whether she was a new friend (or potentially an enemy). They seem to also use their sense of smell to steady themselves when surprised. Gargoyles will frequently inhale deeply via their noses when in deep thought, an observable trait across all gargoyles, though because of his philosophical nature, Goliath does this more often.

When gargoyles are awakening from their stone sleep or are angry, their eyes glow. In general, male gargoyles' eyes glow white, and female gargoyles' eyes glow red. Gargoyle eyes have visible irises and whites; a feature which they share with humans, but which most animals lack.

Gargoyles are immensely strong, and can actually scale stone walls, digging their claws into the stone to provide footholds for themselves. However, despite their wings, they are not capable of actual flight. They can only glide upon air currents. When gargoyles are not gliding and are on the ground, they can "cape" their wings about or rest them upon their shoulders, which allows the beings to avoid being hindered by them as well as for the cosmetic value (with the exception of such gargoyles as Lexington, whose wings are attached to their arms). It should also be noted that, while incapable of flight per se, gargoyle wings are extremely nimble and powerful.

Gargoyles on the ground use their wings as a projection of their size, often flaring their wings outward to do battle, even in confined spaces. This serves two purposes: a perceived increase in size, and an extra weapon, as gargoyles will frequently slap their enemies with their wings, or use the back of the wings as a sort of shield. They also use their wings as we use our arms, tapping objects (as Goliath did when he tapped on the camera lens in Macbeth's house) or pointing with them when it is more convenient.

Mating
Intimate gestures include stroking the hair and/or the horns, bumps, and ridges of one's mate.

Culture and Social Customs
Clans and Family
Gargoyles live in clans, gatherings of fairly closely-related gargoyles. Each clan has a leader, and a second-in-command underneath. The leader's function is self-explanatory; the second-in-command's function is to lead the clan in the leader's absence, and to succeed to the leader position in case the leader is slain or has to step down due to unfitness. (Indeed, leaders of gargoyle clans have to appoint seconds-in-command to ensure a ready-made successor for such an occasion.) If the former leader is still capable of participation after stepping down, then he or she can act as an adviser to the successor.

Gargoyles are in many ways, a very communal race, and this is particularly the case with the hatchlings.

Gargoyle children are raised by the entire clan, and the concept of biological parentage does not exist.

Gargoyle clans that practice communal parenting generally do not care about biological relations. All gargoyles in a single generation are brothers and sisters, all of the gargoyles who contributed eggs to that generation are the parents of those gargoyles and the entire clan is all family, sharing in the responsibility of raising the children. Members of hatchling and parent generations form bonds without regard to blood relation. The one notable case of a gargoyle caring about her biological parentage is Angela. After the sudden revelation that Goliath was her biological father courtesy of Sevarius, Angela began seeking a closer relationship with Goliath. A first time parent, Goliath began acting distant towards his daughter, fearing that giving her special treatment would mean he was favoring her over her rookery siblings because of their biological relationship and turning his back on the Gargoyle Way.

He was also understandably afraid that Angela would eventually start asking about her biological mother Demona, someone Goliath did not want his daughter developing a special relationship with. Eventually, Diane Maza - a mother of three herself - convinced Goliath that all children sometimes desire special treatment and that he and Angela would naturally be close because she was the only one of his children who chose to leave Avalon with him and he was the only gargoyle parent she knew. Once he understood that it didn't mean abandoning his clan's customs, Goliath began treating Angela like his daughter.

Angela continued to be interested in biological parentage, later identifying Coldstone as the father of her rookery brother Gabriel. Brooklyn and Katana's son Nashville was hatched during their TimeDancer adventures .

Although hatchlings belong to the entire clan, gargoyles are a strictly monogamous race. They mate for life (regardless of orientation), and in nearly all cases, when one gargoyle in a pairing dies, the other remains single thereafter. Goliath is a rare exception to this rule, in that he and Demona have "divorced," and Goliath has moved slowly towards a relationship with Elisa Maza.

Gargoyles gather their eggs in caves or underground chambers called rookeries, generally set in mountains or high cliffs, their preferred habitat. (Wyvern Hill is a good example of such a place.) Here they can be safely watched over during their ten-year incubation. (It is quite possible that the necessary defense of the rookery from enemies may have been one of the reasons for gargoyles developing their protective instinct.)

In gargoyle society, the sexes are more or less equal. Female gargoyles are the ones who lay the eggs and nurse the young, of course, but other than that, male and female gargoyles alike fight as warriors to defend the clan, and female gargoyles are just as capable as male gargoyles of becoming seconds-in-command or leaders.

Territory and Protection
The primary purpose in gargoyle life is to protect. The inclination to act as protectors probably comes from a fiercely territorial ancestry. Their clan structure and natural inclination toward an authoritarian style of leadership gives us strong clues as to how early gargate groups interacted. Clearly, early sentient gargates didn't experience nearly as much from species in-fighting as early humans did , as even to the modern age, Gargoyles with no previous relationship openly welcome same-species strangers. It could be that their habitual communal adoption of young gargoyles naturally extends to a generally more accepting environment than the strong ties humans and many other large predators place on blood relation. It's also possible that early gargates were as territorial and violent as a pride of lions or pack of wolves, and as gargate sentience developed over time, they phased these traits out in favor of increasing their odds for survival.

Modern Gargoyle clans are as territorially concerned as their ancestors, in so much as they have a focus on the defense of what they consider their territory. At first, this consisted of merely protecting the clan and its normal roost, particularly the rookery, but as time went on, many gargoyle clans have since expanded upon the definition of this role. Under the influence of Elisa, Goliath came to undertake such an expansion in modern-day Manhattan, declaring that henceforth, he and his clan would protect the inhabitants of that island, both human and gargoyle, against criminals and lawless men, which led to their patrolling the borough at night and foiling crimes. By the 1990s, the Mayan gargoyles had similarly taken upon themselves the mission of protecting the rain forest around their pyramid, rather than just the pyramid itself, and Goliath and Griff together introduced to the other gargoyles of London (or at least Leo and Una) the notion of London itself being a protectorate, rather than just their shop, Into the Mystic and their home, Knight's Spur.

Goliath and Hudson alike feel that protection is an important task of gargoyles; Hudson has many times repeated the adage, "A gargoyle can no more stop protecting the castle than breathing the air," and Goliath himself presented this credo to Coldstone in these words: "Gargoyles protect. It is our nature, our purpose. To lose that is to be corrupt, empty, lifeless."

And protection remains important for gargoyles, indeed. Only a handful of the surviving clans have demonstrated a more skewed interpretation of protection. The London clan chose isolationism and self-preservation for many years. Only the most corrupt of them, such as Coldsteel, Demona and Thailog, have rejected this duty. And there can be few anguishes greater for a gargoyle than failing to protect someone from harm. When gargoyles choose to protect an area, they will do so steadfastly, even when the humans whom they protect respond to them with fear and hatred. (Thus, Goliath found nothing strange about Raven and his "clan" supposedly protecting the very humans who had allegedly destroyed so many of them.) While all of this suggests that the way of protection might have more to do with nurture than genetics, Hudson could well be correct about it being as important to gargoyles as breathing.

Naming
Traditionally, gargoyles did not have names. They considered the concept a peculiar human custom; as Hudson once put it, "Must you humans name everything? Nothing's real to you until you've named it, given it limits... Does the sky need a name? Does the river?". However, by 1996 gargoyles have begun to accept the concept of names, at different times and ways for each clan. In the case of the Wyvern Clan, all of its members were nameless in the 10th century, except for Goliath. However, Demona received her name from Macbeth in 1040, following Duncan's overthrow, and the Trio, Bronx, and Hudson took up their names after awakening in New York in 1994. Demona has given the members of the Labyrinth Clan names as well.

The Avalon Clan gargoyles were all named by Princess Katharine, the Magus and Tom. The London Clan and Ishimura Clan have adopted the practice of naming as well.

Crime
While gargoyles are not perfect, there seems to be less serious crime among them than among humans.

Some punishments for gargoyles who behave poorly are known, however. For minor offenses, a gargoyle can be sent to the rookery (a humiliating punishment, and one not that uncommon). Treason is dealt with by the traitorous gargoyle being banished from the clan. This practice might have contributed to poor relations between gargoyles and humans, since most clans live in remote locations, a human would be more likely to have a random encounter with a rogue gargoyle, who would likely be a poor example of their race (Demona's first encounter with Gillecomgain being a prime example). This was the fate of Yama, after the Ishimura gargoyles' clash with Taro during the Avalon World Tour. After the Wyvern Massacre, Demona (unable to "face" the eggs themselves) sent herself into exile. Due to the impracticality of keeping a single gargoyle out of an entire city, the Manhattan clan adopted the human practice of imprisoning criminals when they captured Demona.

Religion and Magic
When a gargoyle dies, the rest of the clan holds a Wind Ceremony for him or her.

Gargoyles are not magical beings in and of themselves, but some (such as Demona and Una) can learn magic. Gargoyles appear to have an ambivalent attitude towards such arts. Goliath distrusts it for the most part, often uttering when bewildered the cry of "What sorcery is this?", but has accepted the fact that sometimes magical help is required to keep his clan safe; he willingly sought aid from the Magus, for example, in repelling the Archmage's invasion of Avalon.

(Much of his suspicion towards magic, in fact, may be based on his problems with various magic-workers over his life, including the Archmage, the Magus, Demona, and several members of Oberon's Children.) The Wyvern gargoyles may have had some overall antipathy towards magic, in view of Demona's having had to take magic lessons from the Archmage only in secret, but the London gargoyles seem less suspicious towards it, in view of the fact that their shop sells magical goods and Una is a sorceress of some skill. The Guatemalan gargoyles, likewise, made a willing alliance with the wizard who crafted the Mayan Sun Amulet, and Zafiro, Obsidiana, Jade and Turquesa have (so far as we know) seen nothing wrong with making use of them. (For that matter, Goliath never condemned Leo and Una, or the Mayan gargoyles, for their connections to magic.)

Other social customs
Gargoyles think of themselves primarily as gargoyles. Individual gargoyles may pursue particular interests, such as Lexington's fascination with science and technology, but they never think of themselves as scientists, poets, artists, or what-have-you. They merely pursue it, without letting this interest define them.

Usually, gargoyles don't make use of money, considering it unnecessary to their life-style. Under natural circumstances, gargoyles presumably obtained their food by hunting and gathering, which would certainly make a monetary system unnecessary. However, there are always exceptions, especially in the modern world. Demona and Thailog have both gathered great wealth, although for different reasons (Demona to use in financing her schemes to destroy humanity, Thailog to make himself a force to be reckoned with in the modern world).
Real World Background
In the real world, gargoyles are primarily associated with the great stone buildings of medieval Europe, particularly cathedrals, although they were also placed atop castles. Technically speaking, the term "gargoyle" applies only to waterspouts shaped like bizarre creatures, made to carry water away from the building that they have been mounted on; such statues, when they do not serve such a purpose but are merely mounted atop a wall as pure decoration, are called "grotesques" or "chimeras."

The exact origins of architectural gargoyles are uncertain, although they may have been rooted in part in the pagan beliefs of pre-Christian Europe, lingering on in the people's memories even after the dawn of the High Middle Ages. As per the animated series, medieval people often saw gargoyles as a means of frightening demons away from the cathedrals upon which they were mounted, protecting them from the forces of Hell. The image of gargoyles as protectors, therefore, is indeed an accurate one. However, not all medieval churchmen approved of these sculptures; one in particular, the famous theologian St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), denounced them as absurd, useless, disgraceful, and a waste of money. Judging from how many gargoyles were raised upon such cathedrals as Notre Dame in Paris, few seem to have heeded his angry words.

One colorful legend about the origin of gargoyles states that in the 6th century, the town of Rouen was threatened by a dragon named Gargouille that arose out of the river Seine. Gargouille laid the lands around the town waste and devoured everyone in his path, until Archbishop Romanus defeated and slew him. He then consigned the dragon's body to the flames, but Gargouille's head and neck were too toughened by its fiery breath to be consumed. So the Archbishop had Gargouille's head mounted upon the walls of the town as a commemoration of the dragon's defeat. This, so the story goes, is the origin of both gargoyles themselves and their name. (In actual fact, the word "gargoyle" appears to derive from the French word "gargouille", meaning "throat", used here in an onomatopoeic sense to echo the gurgling noises that water makes when it goes down a throat.)

Legend also states that the gargoyles of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris come to life at night and go flying about the city. (This legend was unknown to the Gargoyles production team at the time of the making of the series, however, and must be judged as merely an amusing coincidence in the Gargoyles Universe.)

Gargoyle-like sculptures, depicting fearsome creatures as "protectors", can be found in various other cultures, such as Maya, China, India, Mesopotamia, Persia, ancient Egypt, and even ancient Greece and Rome. This is reflected in the series' portrayal of the non-European gargoyles discovered during the Avalon World Tour in Guatemala and Japan. (The series also made use of a parallel notion in "Heritage", the totem poles of the Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest, although as a red herring here: the creatures portrayed on the totem poles were actually "animal ancestors" of the humans who had originally raised them, rather than gargoyles, and the apparent gargoyles which Goliath and Angela met there were actually illusions created by Raven.)

Gargoyles still crown buildings today even in modern times, in the United States as well as in Europe. In real life as well as in the world of the television series, New York is filled with gargoyles; there are more gargoyles there, in fact, per square mile than anywhere else in the U.S. These new gargoyles are less horrific and more comical in appearance, however; a great many of them are even caricatures of noted personalities (particularly the gargoyles built in universities, who frequently bear a suspicious resemblance to members of the faculty).

Living gargoyles are often found in modern-day works of fantasy, and even more often in fantasy role-playing games, such as TSR's "Dungeons and Dragons", although unfortunately they are usually portrayed in such games as evil monsters. Somehow, perhaps because of their monstrous appearance, gargoyles have been transformed in the public imagination from protectors of the Church to demonic creatures. The Disney animated series has, happily, gone back to the older roots of gargoyles and restored them to their original function in it, although acknowledging the more recent and darker interpretation of them through the theme of the humans' fear and hatred of these beings.
Yama is a male gargoyle and is currently a banished member of the Ishimura Clan. He is also a member of the Redemption Squad.

History
Yama hatched in Ishimura, Japan in 1938. As he grew older he took Sora as his mate and was made second-in-command to Kai. With the rest of his clan, Yama protected Ishimura but over time he grew dissatisfied with the secluded life of the Ishimura Clan, and believed that gargoyles should live more openly with humans. He therefore entered into a covert alliance with Taro, arranging for the building of a "Gargoyle Theme Park" near Ishimura and the secret transportation of his clan there in its stone sleep. Yama believed that, here, his kind would gradually be introduced to the human world; he believed that Taro's intentions mirrored his own.

But he soon discovered that Taro really intended to display the gargoyles as freaks and curiosities to gawking human tourists. Disgusted at the man's falsehood, he defeated him in single combat, thus freeing the clan from him. ("Bushido") However, because he had still assisted Taro in the original act of betrayal, Yama was banished from Ishimura until he could redeem himself for his lost honor. The clan decided that Yama himself would be the judge on when he could return. Saying his farewells to Sora after convincing her not to go with him, Yama went to Tokyo, where the Redemption Squad tracked him down; Hunter offered him a place in the Squad, which would allow him to recover his honor - and threatened his clan if he refused. While Yama was displeased by her threat, he finally accepted her offer. ("The Lost")

After training with the Squad in Paris, the group arrived in Manhattan on a mission to track down Dr. Anton Sevarius. ("Estranged") Yama saved Hunter from Fang in the tunnels beneath the city, but they were both taken captive by the mutate and brought to Sevarius' lab, where the scientist intended to inject Yama with a mutagenic formula, turning him into a gargoyle-human mutate. Fortunately, Dingo and Matrix saved him from this fate and the Squad went on to foil Sevarius' plan to release the CV-1997 Carrier Virus upon the humans gathered at Times Square. They were not, however, able to prevent Sevarius from escaping, nor to stop one of his test subjects, Tasha, from killing herself. When the captured Fang attempted to make a joke about this turn of events, Yama violently assaulted him and nearly killed him, but was stopped by Dingo and Hunter (who had whispered something in his ear). Yama allowed Fang to live, but was furious to discover that the mutate would be joining the Squad. Yama and Fang continue to have a poor relationship. ("Louse")

Characteristics
Yama has grey skin, black hair, and two pairs of curved horns. He has a blade on the end of his tail and blade-like spikes on his forearms. His wings are unusual, with no claws on the wrists, and strange markings that look like feathers.

Yama and Sora are mates, although Yama's exile from Ishimura has, for the moment, raised a barrier between them.

Hudson's sword is his signature weapon. The elderly gargoyle took it from a Viking shortly before he was placed under the Magus' spell of stone sleep and has carried it ever since. ("Awakening: Part Two") The sword is notable as one of the few relics of the Middle Ages that the gargoyles use on a regular basis. When David Xanatos replaced the sleeping Hudson with a stone statue, he claimed that the sword was the hardest thing to replicate. ("The Price")

Characteristics
The sword is incredibly sharp, and when Hudson puts his full strength behind a swing it is capable of slicing through metal and stone. In the modern day, Hudson soon learned that its reflective surfaces were excellent for deflecting laser fire. ("Long Way To Morning")

Although it is not clear what the sword is made of (Greg Weisman suggests that it is probably steel), the fact the Hudson could not use it to cut Oberon's hair indicates that it is not made of cold iron. ("The Gathering" Part Two)

When Hudson enters stone sleep with his sword, it sometimes turns to stone with him and other times does not.

Production Background
Although Hudson is shown using the sword for the first time in "Awakening" Part Two, he is occasionally depicted wearing it earlier than this. In particular, he is shown with his sword in the flashback at the beginning of "Reawakening", which takes place the night before Hudson acquires the sword.

Angela is a female gargoyle and a member of the Manhattan Clan.

History
Angela, like the other Wyvern rookery eggs, was brought to Avalon by Princess Katharine, the Magus, and Tom while still in the shell, in 995. ("Avalon" Part One) There she hatched in 1058 and was raised by the three humans alongside her many brothers and sisters. All of "The Eggs", as their adoptive parents continued to call them, were raised to know of Goliath as an almost legendary heroic character. ("Avalon Part Two)

Angela's adventures began when the Archmage attacked Avalon in 1995. Goliath, Elisa, and Bronx came to Avalon to help defend it from the evil sorcerer, and she befriended them, and fought valiantly alongside Goliath in the battles that followed. Curious about the outside world, she afterwards accompanied Goliath, Elisa, and Bronx when they left Avalon. ("Avalon" Part Two, "Avalon" Part Three)

In the course of the Avalon World Tour, Angela learned her true biological parentage. When she was captured by Sevarius at Loch Ness, he discovered that Goliath was her biological father, and informed her of it. Angela was astounded, but accepted it at once, and began looking up to Goliath as her father. ("Monsters") Goliath was concerned by her desire for a father/daughter relationship. Gargoyle custom dictates that the parents of a generation of gargoyles raise their children communally. Goliath feared that accepting Angela as his daughter would mean he was showing her undue favor. Moreover, he was very concerned about Angela's fate when she learned who her biological mother was. He initially refused to recognize her as his daughter, despite her pleas. But a conversation with Diane Maza during their visit to Nigeria helped Goliath to see that Angela did deserve a special relationship with him, as he was the only gargoyle parent she currently knew and she was the only one of his children currently with him. ("Mark of the Panther") In Paris, Angela also learned that Goliath and Demona were once mates and that Demona was her biological mother, something which shocked her tremendously. ("Sanctuary")

Angela also displayed her quick-wittedness during the World Tour many times, coming to the aid of her companions on the quest. It was she who discovered that Raven's "totem beast gargoyles" were illusions, who supplied the key to Anansi's defeat by realizing that the great spider was too bulky to battle the gargoyles on the ground, and who brought Goliath to his senses when he had become temporarily corrupted by the Eye of Odin. ("Heritage," "Mark of the Panther," "Eye of the Storm")

Angela finally joined the Manhattan Clan upon the end of the Avalon World Tour. The Trio were all delighted to see her, and began eagerly - too eagerly, in fact - courting her. ("The Gathering" Part One) Angela finally persuaded them to slow down after their aggressive wooing got out of hand during the turf war between Tony Dracon and Tomas Brod. ("Turf") Eventually (with some assistance, perhaps, from the souls of Othello and Desdemona) she chose Broadway as her mate, since he alone of the three young gargoyles could truly relate to her on a personal and emotional level, not simply for her looks. ("Possession") Despite eventually becoming closer to Broadway, Angela remained friends with Lexington and Brooklyn, though Brooklyn had some trouble being around the couple for some time.

Angela finally re-encountered her biological mother when Demona was temporarily captured and imprisoned in the Labyrinth, and Angela tried to understand her better. Demona attempted to convert Angela to her viewpoint but failed, and began to develop tender feelings for her, so much so that she finally rescued Goliath and his clan from Thailog in order to save Angela's life. ("The Reckoning")

When the Hunters came to New York in search of Demona, they mistook Angela for her mother and almost killed her; Elisa only barely managed to save the young female's life. It was this event that led to Goliath's fateful feud with the Hunters. ("Hunter's Moon" Part One, "Hunter's Moon" Part Two)

Upon moving to the Eyrie Building with the rest of the Clan in October, 1996 Angela showed sadness that humanity, which had just learned of the clan's existence, showed such fear and hatred of gargoyles and also was dismayed that on Halloween they had to pretend to be dressed as gargoyles to fit in among the human populace. Broadway, who Angela had grown ever more closer to, helped convince her that one day humans would accept them. ("The Journey", "Invitation Only")

Characteristics
Angela, thanks to her upbringing on the peaceful isle of Avalon, is the gentlest and most innocent member of the clan - she remained somewhat naive, in fact, long after coming to Manhattan. She views harmony between humans and gargoyles as natural, thanks to the aforesaid upbringing, and so cannot understand why the humans of New York fear and hate her clan so much (it is unclear if she is aware of how Katharine and the Magus treated gargoyles before the Wyvern massacre); it bewilders and grieves her. She is very trusting and kind, and a good judge of character. She also loves Goliath as her father very much, and loves and respects Elisa tremendously; she approves of Goliath and Elisa's relationship, although she sees Elisa as more like an older sister than like a mother or stepmother.

Demona is something of a concern for Angela. While well aware of her mother’s true nature, she also cannot help but make an attempt to reach out to Demona, precisely because of their family bonds (having been raised by humans, Angela does see some importance in biological relationships between gargoyles, though she still supports the Gargoyle Way). She finds Demona's hatred of humanity and bitter quest for revenge distressing, as she does Demona's vendetta with Goliath. But she has the hope that Demona will someday be healed of her evil and rejoin the clan, although she has no illusions that Goliath and Demona will become mates again. However, like her mother, Angela is an iconoclast and left Avalon because she wanted more than normal clan life had to offer.

Angela is a fierce and bold gargoyle warrior all the same, however, and can even display a fierce temper on occasion. She particularly showed it when the Trio (or at least Lexington and Brooklyn) constantly called her "Angie" while courting her (she hates the nickname), and can hold her own well in a fight. (This initially seems hard to notice because of her sheltered upbringing on Avalon, but Angela has learned more about how to fight during the course of her adventures).

Angela is very attractive, tall and slender with long dark hair worn in a ponytail; she has inherited her father's lavender complexion, although her features are closer to Demona's. When Angela left Avalon, she wore a one piece conservative outfit, but shortly after moving to the Eyrie Building, she changed her outfit to a sexier, collard two piece, one that was more reminiscent of Demona's typical style. Indeed, by early 1997, she and Broadway had already mated.

Angela's name not only serves as a contrast to her mother's, but also as a sign of how Princess Katharine's own feelings towards gargoyles changed for the better after 994.

Greg Weisman has expressed that Angela probably does not know too much about the Gargoyle Way, and that she was raised with medieval Christian values, without necessarily being baptized a Christian.
Avalon Clan is a gargoyle clan that resides on the mystic island of Avalon.

History
The Avalon Clan has its beginnings with the original Wyvern Clan. After the Magus agreed cast upon Goliath the same spell of sleep that he had cast upon the surviving members of the Wyvern Clan, he and Princess Katharine vowed to care for the eggs of the clan. Many of the hatchlings were named after angels. ("Awakening: Part Two", "Avalon" Part One) Growing up, the youths were told of their origins and high praise was apparently particularly related of Goliath. This raised his reputation as a leader among the children to near legendary status. ("Awakening: Part Two")

At this time, Angela, the Clan's second-in-command, left with Goliath, Elisa and Bronx to join them in Manhattan. ("Avalon" Part Two, "Avalon" Part Three)

Princess Katharine was the daughter of Prince Malcolm, and ruler of Castle Wyvern at the time of the Wyvern Massacre in 994.

History
Katharine was born to Prince Malcolm and Princess Elena in 976. ("Vows") From childhood onwards, she disliked and feared the gargoyles (partly because Prince Malcolm foolishly used threats of gargoyles to scare her into good behavior). ("Long Way to Morning") When she succeeded her father to the rule of Wyvern, somewhere between 984 and 994, she made her feelings plain, openly viewing the Wyvern Clan as monsters. When the Captain of the Guard brought Goliath and Demona to her feast celebrating the initial defeat of Hakon, Katharine angrily demoted him, so that he would only report to the Magus rather than directly to her. It was this act that was the catalyst for Demona and the Captain betraying Castle Wyvern to the Vikings.

Katharine was taken prisoner, as were her human subjects; the Captain and Hakon planned to hold her for ransom. But when Goliath and the other surviving gargoyles attacked the Vikings' camp, Hakon angrily attempted to kill her; in the ensuing confrontation, the Captain, Hakon, and Katharine all fell off the top of a cliff, but Goliath saved Katharine's life in time. Katharine, startled by this event, thanked Goliath, and began to understand the error of her ways at last. When she discovered that the Magus had irrevocably put the other gargoyles under a sleep spell (locking them in stone until the Castle rose above the clouds), Katharine made what amends she could by promising to take care of the eggs in the rookery. ("Awakening: Part One", "Awakening: Part Two")

Katharine took her people and the eggs to her uncle Kenneth II's court in Edinburgh, since it was no longer safe for them at Castle Wyvern. The following year, however, Kenneth was murdered by the ambitious Constantine, who usurped the Scottish throne, and decided to strengthen his claim to it by marrying Katharine. To ensure her cooperation, he threatened to destroy the eggs if she refused. Katharine was left with one hope: she, alongside the Magus, Tom, and the eggs had to flee to Avalon, the only place where they would be safe from Constantine. ("Avalon" Part One)

Here, Katharine and her human companions raised "The Eggs". In the years that followed, she and Tom fell in love with each other, and lived together as husband and wife, much to the grief of the Magus, who had been in love with her for years. ("Avalon" Part Three)

{{CIT|Raising thirty-six gargoyles was not the reason behind not having any biological children with Tom.
In 1995, the Archmage and the Weird Sisters attacked Avalon, and Katharine took part in the defense of her home with the rest of the clan, even laying Demona low with her own laser cannon. ("Avalon" Parts One, Two, and Three) The following year, Katharine also took part in the defense of the Avalon Clan from the returned Oberon. ("Ill Met By Moonlight") She and Oberon are now on reasonably peaceful terms. ("The Gathering" Part One)

==Characteristics==

:For the horse of the same name, see Magus (horse)

The Magus was the wizard who cursed the gargoyles, trapping them in stone sleep. His real name is unknown, "Magus" being the Latin word for "wizard", and therefore a title.

History
The Magus was born in the year 966. In 982, he had already become apprenticed to the Archmage, though not for long, thanks to the evil sorcerer's banishment for treason. From there, he became the new court wizard for Castle Wyvern and chief adviser to its ruler (by 994, Princess Katharine). Like Katharine, he disliked the gargoyles, considering them unnatural creatures. During this time, he also fell in love with her, if in a somewhat hopeless manner. ("Awakening" Part One)

In 994, the Magus was captured alongside the rest of Katharine's household when the castle fell to the Vikings. When the surviving gargoyles arrived to rescue the humans, Hakon furiously tried to kill Princess Katharine. The Magus mistakenly believed that he had succeeded, and, blaming the gargoyles for this, cast a spell upon them from the Grimorum Arcanorum, causing Hudson, the trio, and Bronx to enter stone sleep "until the castle rises above the clouds".

When he discovered that Katharine was not dead, and that Goliath had actually saved her life, he was remorseful of his rash action, but he could not reverse his spell, since Hakon had burnt the page with the counter-spell upon it. He did, however, at Goliath's request, place the same spell upon the gargoyle leader, and agreed along with Katharine to watch over the gargoyle's rookery children. ("Awakening" Part One, "Awakening" Part Two)

Afterwards, the Magus accompanied Princess Katharine, Tom, and the the eggs to Kenneth II's court. He soon began to write a magical record with a personal account of the Wyvern Massacre and of their travels in the Grimorum Arcanorum. ("Avalon" Part One)

When the following year Kenneth was murdered by Constantine, who then seized the throne and tried to force Princess Katharine to marry him to solidify his position, the Magus had to take action to protect both Katharine and the eggs. Using his magical knowledge, he smuggled them out of the castle and took them to Avalon. Their path was barred, however, by the Weird Sisters, who denied them entry and attempted to turn them into owls. The Magus reflected the Sisters' spell upon them, but knew that he could not bring the Grimorum Arcanorum into Avalon, it being an object of human magic. He entrusted it to Finella and Mary, while entering Avalon with the Princess and Tom. ("Avalon" Part One)

Meanwhile, in Scotland, the Magus was considered a wanted fugitive by Constantine. Eventually, Brother Valmont convinced Constantine that the Magus had "left this world" and no longer posed a threat. ("The Gate", "Tyrants")

This was true. On Avalon, the three humans raised the eggs together. The Magus noticed, with the passing of the years, that Katharine and Tom had fallen in love with each other. Because of his own love for the Princess, he was heartbroken, but remained on Avalon to raise the young gargoyles out of atonement for having turned the gargoyles to stone. He spent much time by himself when not raising them, and in the process, learned how to harness the intrinsic magic of Avalon, although he did not find it an easy feat.

When the Archmage and the Weird Sisters attacked Avalon, the Magus was convinced that he lacked the strength to defy them without the Grimorum. But when Elisa came to the island with Goliath and Bronx and announced her intent to awaken King Arthur from his enchanted sleep in the Hollow Hill to recruit him for the defense of the Avalon Clan, the Magus accompanied her. Using the raw magical energy that he tapped from Avalon, he defeated the two animated suits of armor that guarded Arthur's sleeping place.

In the battle that followed, the Magus fought against the Weird Sisters, and finally utilized his magical strength to transform the two suits of armor, which were made of iron, into a chain that bound them fast. However, the strain of this act was too much for him, and he died soon afterwards, laid to rest on the very bier upon which King Arthur had slept for over a thousand years. ==Summary==

Main Plot
Demona and Xanatos work together to create and awaken Coldstone using a blending of science and sorcery. She then tells him about the Wyvern Massacre, and that Goliath betrayed their clan to the vikings. Meanwhile, Goliath feels he is losing sight of his purpose as a gargoyle. He follows Elisa on her patrol and ends up in Times Square where a rampaging Coldstone is causing destruction. Goliath tackles him, and Demona, Xanatos (in battle armor), and the trio join the fray, then relocate to the George Washington Bridge to continue the fight. Goliath tries to reason with Coldstone before they both fall into the icy water below. Coldstone saves Goliath after reflecting on the gargoyle mantra to protect, then saves him again by taking a blast meant for Goliath from Demona, and seemingly falls to his death in the river. Xanatos and Demona retreat after Elisa, Hudson, and Bronx arrive. Goliath comes to the realization that his "castle" is the whole island of Manhattan, and pronounces that the Manhattan Clan will protect all citizens of the city from then on.

Subplots
In a flashback to the night before the Massacre in 994, both Demona and Othello question Goliath's desire to protect the humans and their castle after the Magus berates them. Hudson speaks the old gargoyle mantra of protecting the castle no matter what, reminding the two gargoyles of their nature and purpose.

In the present day, Goliath is bothered by his clan's idleness, and yearns to find his place in the community. He follows Elisa and Matt Bluestone on patrol to a grocery store belonging to Mr. Jaffe, an old friend of Matt's who is consistently robbed. Goliath wonders why Mr. Jaffe doesn't leave, to which Elisa explains that providing his community with food is more important to him than hiding away.

Coldstone is torn on whether he should believe Demona or Goliath. In the end, he sides with Goliath, realizing that there is more to life than just simply surviving, and a gargoyle must be a protector to be whole, something for which Demona has yet to learn.

The clan's first act as protectors of the city is ridding Mr. Jaffe of his repeat burglar by ordering the man to return the money he stole and turn himself in.

Continuity
In this episode, New York City is covered in snow. It started snowing in the previous episode, "Her Brother's Keeper".

Coldstone appears for the first time. He is introduced in an early scene as one of the last gargoyles that Goliath spoke to before the Wyvern Massacre (before chasing the Vikings as shown in "Awakening Part One").

The Magus has a cameo in the flashback sequence.

The spell Demona uses to "reawaken" Coldstone is one that she stole from the Grimorum Arcanorum in "Temptation".

Travis Marshall and Officer Morgan have cameos in the episode, and Mr. Jaffe (who would reappear in "Eye of the Beholder" and "Protection") is introduced. Phil Travanti also appears at Times Square with Morgan and other police officers, although he has no lines of dialogue.

In a well-devised continuity link to "The Edge", Goliath continues to assume that the "red-armored Steel Clan robot" is only that, and when he addresses Xanatos, does so believing that Xanatos is at home directing the operations through a remote communications link and receiving Goliath's message through it. It is not until Xanatos removes his helmet in the battle at the George Washington Bridge that the gargoyles discover the truth.

Brooklyn again displays his grudge against Demona from "Temptation", during that same battle, even asking her if she has any spells to save her this time.

At the end of the episode, Coldstone falls from the George Washington Bridge, apparently disabled. He resurfaces again in the episode "Legion".

Tidbits
"Reawakening" was originally entitled "Awakening", but that name was later on applied to the series opener instead. The final title, of course, serves as another link to "Awakening".

The flashback to 994 (the night before the Wyvern Massacre) immediately follows the line "We live in dangerous times".

In the flashback, Hudson is seen with his sword even though he did not obtain it until the next night.

The Wyvern Massacre was the daytime destruction of nearly all of the Wyvern Clan in 994.

History
The events that led to the Wyvern Massacre were set in motion by Demona and the Captain of the Guard. Both were angered by the disdain with which Princess Katharine and her people treated the gargoyles who defended them nightly. They plotted to lure Goliath and the rest of the gargoyles away from Castle Wyvern at night, making sure they could not return to the castle before sunrise. The Captain would sabotage the humans' defenses, allowing the Vikings to easily take the castle that night. The people of Wyvern would be taken captive and the gargoyles would be free to resume life as they had known it before their alliance with humans.

The plan went awry almost from the start. Goliath did not wish to leave the castle unprotected and although both Demona and Othello offered to accompany him, he pursued the Vikings (actually only a few soldiers leading horses as a decoy) with only Hudson. Since nearly the entire clan would still be present at Wyvern Hill that night, Demona reluctantly agreed with the Captain to modify the plan. The Captain signalled Hakon, the Viking leader, to attack the following day while the gargoyles slept and he vowed to Demona that he would guarantee the gargoyles' safety. Fearing what the other gargoyles would think if they knew of her treachery, Demona did not warn any of her clan of the coming attack, instead leaving the job of protecting them to the Captain. She did, however, flee the castle shortly before dawn, abandoning her clan to their fate. The Captain tried to defend the sleeping gargoyles that day, but Hakon did not trust his claims that the clan would not pursue his troops once the humans were gone. Hakon and his men shattered the gargoyles in their stone sleep, all but destroying the entire clan.

A total of seven gargoyles survived the Wyvern Massacre. Goliath and Hudson discovered that the Vikings had created a diversion to draw them away from the castle, but were unable to get back before sunrise. The Trio and Bronx had been sent to the rookery earlier by Goliath as punishment for an argument with some of the humans. Demona survived from her hiding place, but did not reveal herself to the other survivors out of guilt for causing the massacre. By the time she returned, planning to say she had gone looking for Goliath and had been away from the castle at sunrise, Goliath and the others had all been placed under the sleep spell by the Magus. The thirty-six eggs in the rookery also survived and would form the basis of the Avalon Clan. ("Awakening" Part One, "City of Stone" Part One, "Reawakening")

The remains of Othello, Desdemona and Iago and their corresponding souls were later resurrected as the cyborg Coldstone. The souls of Desdemona and Iago were later transferred over to the robotic bodies of Coldfire and Coldsteel respectively, bringing the total number of original clan members that are active in the modern day to ten.
Kai is the leader of the Ishimura Clan of gargoyles.

History
In 1996 he and the clan were betrayed by Yama and Taro when the clan was moved during their stone sleep to a "Gargoyle Theme Park" built by Taro with the intent of revealing the clan (and the gargoyle species) to the world. Fortunately, Kai and the clan were able to escape the domed structure before the press arrived. ("Bushido") After the incident, the clan banished Yama

Characteristics
Despite his age, Kai is still a strong warrior. Like most his clan, he has black hair and two sets of horns. His brow horns are very similar to Goliath's and he has a larger set of horns behind those. He has greenish skin and wing coloration. His more unusual features are the spikes on each cheek and wrists and his tail which ends in a pointed blade. His wings are unique in that they have typical gargoyle wing ribbing, but also sport three small "fingers", giving him more digits on his wings than any gargoyle seen elsewhere so far.

Kai's "大洋" name means "ocean" in Japanese.

Bronx is a gargoyle beast of the Manhattan Clan.

History
and quickly grew to become a formidable "watchdog" for the gargoyles, resolutely defending Castle Wyvern against its enemies. He survived the Wyvern Massacre in 994 because he had been sent down to the rookery with the trio by Goliath for getting into a fight with some of the humans, and was afterwards locked into a stone sleep by the Magus, only to be re-awakened a thousand years later when Xanatos moved Castle Wyvern to the Eyrie Building. ("Awakening" Part One, "Awakening" Part Two)

Bronx took less part in the clan's adventures than did the other gargoyles, largely because he lacks wings; he stays home, instead, and snoozes beside Hudson's recliner. In fact, Bronx spends most of his time there sleeping (occasionally on Lexington's magazines when Lex wants to read them). He also has a formidable appetite, and will eagerly eat anything as long as it counts as food.

But Bronx is still a redoubtable fighter (if his "stay-at-home" role gives him less opportunity to display it). He can successfully intimidate the gargoyles' opponents when he charges at them, growling, and has powerful jaws. He is particularly vicious against robotic foes. This may be due to his being attacked by a Steel Clan robot shortly after being re-awakened ("Awakening" Part Five). He quickly helped destroy that robot and has attacked most robots ever since. He once chewed half the face off Coyote 1.0 (giving it its distinctive half-human half-robot visage that all future Coyote robots have borne) ("Leader of the Pack"), and he also tends to growl at Coldstone when he seems to shift personalities. Bronx's ferocity in battle makes him a valuable member of the clan. He is also an excellent judge of character and extremely loyal, trusting those who are true friends of the clan and growling in a very hostile fashion at enemies, even enemies pretending to be friends. Bronx also has an excellent sense of smell and has come in handy when his clanmates needed assistance in finding someone.

While Bronx's adventures in New York were few, he did accompany Goliath, Elisa, and Angela on the Avalon World Tour. He displayed his useful olfactory abilities when he tracked down the Werepanthers Fara Maku and Tea Gora to Kara Digi during his stay in Nigeria ("Mark of the Panther"). But his greatest adventure of the Avalon Tour came when he met Rory Dugan in Ireland, and helped him realize his true destiny as the reincarnation of Cu Chullain so as to save his companions from the Banshee. ("The Hound of Ulster"). Bronx may, in fact, be the reincarnation of the Hound of Ulster. He is also one of the few gargates that has at one point remained as flesh during daylight. This occurred when he found the Obsidian Pendent linked to the Mayan Sun Amulet and held on to it after sunrise ("The Green").

Characteristics
Bronx's name was bestowed upon him by Brooklyn in 1994, after the Bronx in New York (presumably because it sounded close enough to an animal's bark or growl).

Bronx's biological parents are "Chomp" and "Chaw". He has a deep blue color, fan-shaped ears, two small horns above his brows, and three spikes running along his back. His tail is very short.

Bronx hates pigeons, with an almost savage fury.
Behind the Scenes
Voice Actor: Frank Welker

Earlier in the development of the series, Bronx was slated to be the comic relief character. He was described as "angst-ridden", the one member of the clan who really wasn't happy about being awake in the modern world. Concept drawings suggest Bronx being able to hover just a few inches above the ground by flapping slightly oversized ears like a hummingbird. It was later decided that Bronx would be more interesting if he acted more like an actual dog rather than a cartoon pooch.

Another possible name for Bronx was simply "Dog".
