The Houka were a tribe in Nigeria; their chieftain is known as the Oba.
History
Under the Panther Queen, they built the city of Kara Digi, and lived there briefly until Anansi drove them out. ("Mark of the Panther")
Real World Background
While the tribe featured in Gargoyles is fictitious, there are similarities found with the Yoruba and Edo, two West African peoples located in Nigeria, Benin, and Togo that use the title of 'Oba' for their rulers.
