Luftwaffe is a German word meaning "air weapon," a term that is applied to military air forces. In Gargoyles, Griff of the London Clan fought alongside the Royal Air Force in the Battle of Britain, to protect London from the Deutsche Luftwaffe, the German Air Force, during World War II. ("M.I.A.")
