Real World Background
Edith married Henry I of England, and changed her name to Matilda (reportedly because Henry and his nobles found "Matilda" easier to pronounce than "Edith"). They had two children, William (who was drowned in the sinking of the White Ship in 1120) and Matilda (who would become the mother of Henry II of England, and battle with her cousin Stephen over the English throne upon Henry's death in 1135). She died in 1118.
