The Tanist Stone was one of the names of the Stone of Destiny. ("Rock of Ages")

A tanist, in ancient Ireland, was the man appointed to succeed the local king upon his death or retirement (much like the second-in-command in a gargoyle clan). Presumably this title of the Stone's reflects its role in the appointing of kings.
