New Year's Eve is the final day of the calendar year.
History
New Year's Eve, 1996
Shortly after midnight, the Redemption Squad arrived in Manhattan to investigate Anton Sevarius, ensconcing themselves at the Casablanca Hotel.
After sunrise, Robyn Canmore visited her older brother, Jason Canmore at Rikers Island and her younger brother, John Castaway at the Quarrymen Brownstone. John washed his hands of her when she refused to participate in his continued hunt for gargoyles.
Dingo and Matrix ventured off on their own to pursue Sevarius before sundown. After sunset, Yama and Hunter followed them into the Labyrinth but split up. Hunter was about to be attacked by Fang but was rescued by Yama. However, Fang managed to shock both unconscious and took them to Sevarius, who had already mutated Thug, Tasha, Erin and Benny. They were soon rescued by Dingo and Matrix.
Sevarius then sent Fang to Times Square to unleash the CV-1997 Carrier Virus and mutate every human in the vicinity (which included Margot Yale, Brendan Quarters, Tri Chung, Terry Chung, Jayla Réal, and Cenek Belinsky) into armored mutates, but the scheme was foiled by the Redemption Squad at the stroke of midnight. ("Estranged", "Louse")
Real World Background
In the Gregorian calendar, New Year's Eve, also known as Old Year's Day, is the evening or the entire day of the last day of the year, December 31st. In many countries, New Year's Eve is celebrated with dancing, eating, drinking, and watching or lighting fireworks. The celebrations generally go on past midnight into New Year's Day, January 1st.
In the United States, New Year's Eve is celebrated via a variety of social gatherings, and large-scale public events such as concerts, fireworks shows, and "drops"—an event inspired by time balls where an item is lowered or raised over the course of the final minute of the year. Drop events are typically patterned after the annual "ball drop" held at New York City's Times Square, where a 5,400-kilogram (11,875 lb), 3.7-metre-diameter (12 ft) ball is lowered down a 21-metre-high (70 ft) pole on the roof of One Times Square. The event has been held since 1907, and the ball itself—which is adorned with Waterford Crystal panels and an LED lighting system—has been displayed atop the building year-round since 2009.
New York City and Times Square serve as the focal point for national media coverage of the holiday.
Major theme parks also hold New Year's celebrations; Disney theme parks, such as Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland in Anaheim, California, are traditionally the busiest around the Christmas and New Year's holidays.
