Oxford is a city in the state of Mississippi. Judge Ian Roebling once shared with Goliath that he is from there. ("Masque")
Real World Background
Founded in 1837, Oxford was named after the city and district in Oxfordshire, England. It is home to the University of Mississippi. In 1962, James Howard Meredith decided to enroll in the still-segregated university. In trying to exercise his right to attend a public state university, riots broke out and he faced the might of Governor Ross Barnett, who swore that no school would be integrated while he remained in office. On September 29th, President John F. Kennedy ordered 31,000 servicemen to accompany Meredith so that he could complete his registration. [1]
It is also the hometown of William Faulkner, who used Oxford as the basis for his fictional town of Jefferson. Greg Weisman is a known fan of Faulkner's work, writing how it has served as one of the many inspirations for Gargoyles. [2] [3][4][5]
