Musketeers were calvary soldiers that served the French royal family in 17th Century France.

History

At some point during their TimeDance, Brooklyn and Katana encountered a trio of Musketeers, surrounded by a rival group. ("New Rules")

Real World Background

The Musketeers of the Guard were created by King Louis XIII in 1622 when he supplied a company of the calvary with muskets (hence the name). This military unit was open to lower classes of the French nobility, compared to the King's own Garde du Corps. Riding on horseback, the soldiers wore distinctive blue tunics with four white crosses on their front, back, and sides. [1] They were based in Paris near the Louvre, before they were relocated to Versailles in 1682 during the reign of Louis XIV. [2] Cardinal Richelieu formed a rival group of Musketeers loyal to him, an element that plays out in the novel, The Three Musketeers. [3]

King Louis XVI disbanded the Musketeers in 1776, but a second iteration would be reestablished between 1814 and 1815 during the exile and return of Napoleon.
