History
When Demona and Angelika were invited to join Sigurd Magnusson's navy, Demona was confident that allying herself with another human (and Viking king, no less) would guarantee trouble for her and her daughter. The Norse gargoyles promised safe passage by showing Demona and Angelika the Box. It's features were ultimately enough protection for Demona to be persuaded. ("Fortune Favors the Brave...")

Characteristics
As described by Magni, the Box could only be locked from the inside, with the gargoyles having the only key. He was confident that it would ensure their survival from not only the humans onboard, but even if the ship sank. Modi was confident they'd likely drown, a risk all sailors shared while voyaging, admittedly. ("Fortune Favors the Brave...")
