Raoul Coupain in 1138.

Raoul Coupain was a citizen of Vyones.

History

In 1138, Raoul was involved with Nicolette Villom (to the envy of Blaise Reynard) and alerted Nicolette and her father of the murders of Gerome Mazzal and Guillaume Maspier. Nicolette buried herself in her suitor's arms at the horror of it as Reynard watched. Moments later Satyre invaded the Vyones Tavern and swatted Raoul aside - abducting Nicolette.

The following morning, following the deaths and carnage, Raoul kept watch on Nicolette as she comforted the orphaned Martin-Pêcheur Reynard. ("For Not Everything With Wings...")

Real World Background

In Clark Ashton Smith's short story "The Maker of Gargolyes", Raoul Coupain is a mercer's assistant and newcomer to the medieval French town of Vyones. As in the Gargoyles comic, Coupain is the would-be suitor of Nicolette Villom, inflaming the hatred and jealousy of Blaise Reynard. In contrast to Gargoyles, Smith's Coupain does not survive the original story. Instead, he is savagely murdered by Reynard's stone "cat-headed monster".
