Real World Background
In 1095, two years after Malcolm Canmore's death, Robert de Mowbray rebelled against William Rufus, only to be defeated. (William captured him and forced his followers - including his wife and Arkel - to surrender by threatening to have him blinded.) He was afterwards imprisoned.
