Subterranea is an underground realm, ruled by the Mole Man.


History

Characteristics

Subterranea is a vast system of caves hidden deep beneath the Earth's surface. It is inhabited by Moloids and various variety of Kaiju. A hidden tunnel connects Subterranea with the Labyrinth beneath Manhattan.

Production Background

Subterranea was created by Paul Gustavson and Ray Gill. It first appeared in Marvel Mystery Comics Vol 1 #10 (June 1940), though it would not be officially named until several decades afterwards.

In the Marvel Universe, Subterranea is a vast underground network of interconnected caverns running all throughout the Earth and roughly analogous to the "Hollow Earth" of much speculative fiction and conspiracy theories.

Subterranea is inhabited by countless factions and hidden civilizations that regularly conspire to conquer the surface world or strive with each other for dominance of the underground realm. Among these are the Mole Man and his various minions, the immortal Tyrannus (formerly the real-life Roman Emperor Romulus Augustulus), Queen Kala; ruler of an underground off-shoot of Marvel's Atlantis, and the Deviants of Lemuria; a race of monstrous genetically-engineered humanoids created by the alien Celestials.
