Real World Background
The title of Oba translates as 'ruler' in both Yoruba and Bini, and the office has both political and religious functions. [1][2] Historically, the title has been hereditary, passed down to the first-born son. Bestowed by the Oyo Mesi (the "kingmakers" that later advise and serve the Oba), the title can rotate between various ruling houses, traditionally divining the choice after consulting with an oracle, known as Ifa. Other details in how the Oyo Mesi select an Oba are often undisclosed to the public. [3] Today, the title is largely ceremonial, but modern politicians still seek counsel or endorsement from the local Oba to curry favor and support from the locals. [4]
