Real World Background

Esau (in Hebrew, עֵשָׂו) is the son of Isaac and Rebekah, and the grandson of Abraham and Sarah. The older brother of Jacob, the two struggled with one another (even in the womb), culminating in Jacob taking his birthright by impersonating Esau to receive the blessing from their elderly and blind father. In ancient times, the brother's feuding served as an origin story for the conflict between the ancient Israelites (Jacob's descendants) and the Edomites (a kingdom to Israel's south that flourished from the 13th Century BC until they were conquered by the Babylonians in the 6th Century BC).
