Spiner was named after Brent Spiner, the voice actor who played Puck. Alone of all the player namesakes mentioned in "Estranged", no characters voiced by Brent Spiner appeared in the issue. He was likely included because the word 'puck' may refer both to the character and to the rubber disc used in hockey games.
