The Mutates

The Mutates are four humans (Talon, Maggie, Claw, and Fang) mutated by Dr. Sevarius into winged felines.

Wolf is also a Mutate, but the term generally refers only to the original four winged individuals.

History

Xanatos employed Sevarius to create the Mutates as a means of giving him a substitute clan of gargoyles, after it became clear that Goliath and his clan would not serve him. Sevarius transformed four human subjects (three were homeless people recruited off the street and the fourth was Derek Maza) into gargoyle-like creatures using the DNA of three animals: large cats for their strength and speed, bats to provide wings, and electric eels to provide the Mutates with enough energy to fly through their electroreceptors, and also the ability to fire out bolts of electricity as weapons. In addition, the mutates are able to cape their wings like gargoyles.("Metamorphosis")

Xanatos' scheme did not proceed as well as he had hoped, however. While the Mutates did serve him for a while, believing that he was the only one who could turn them back into humans, they finally learned that he had arranged for their mutation all along in order to make them into his flunkies, and broke away from him. Instead, they went to live in the Labyrinth, where under Talon's leadership, they took many of the homeless people in New York under their protection, and eventually the Clones as well. Together, they formed the Labyrinth Clan. In late 1996, Maggie became pregnant by Talon. It is somewhat likely this child will be a Mutate as well, though obviously of a different sort having never been human. ("The Cage", "Kingdom", "The Reckoning", "The Rock")

Further information on Talon, Maggie, Claw, and Fang can be found in their individual entries.

The Mutates' condition will not be cured; they will remain Mutates for the rest of their lives.
