The Mediterranean Sea is a large body of water on Earth that is bordered by the continents of Europe to the north, Asia to the east, and Africa to the south. It flows into the Atlantic Ocean in the west through the strait of Gibraltar.

History

While most ancestors of the New Olympian Clan originated from Greece, there were gargoyles that emigrated to New Olympus from other civilizations across the Mediterranean. [1]

In the 1108 AD, King Sigurd Magnusson sailed on with a fleet of sixty ships into the Mediterranean through the Strait of Gibraltar, sailing (and crusading) to the island of Formentera, Jerusalem, Sidon, and eventually (three years after leaving Norway) to Constantinople. Real World Background

Ancient Canaanites called it the Great Sea (הים הגדול) and, as early as 2500 BC, they developed into a seafaring society with various trading city-states and colonies (such as Carthage, Sardinia, Sicily, Sidon, and Tyre) across the Mediterranean now collectively referred to in the modern day as the Phoenicians. During the Roman Empire, it was referred to as Mare Nostrum ("Our Sea") – which is fitting, since the Roman Empire is the only political body to ever control the Mediterranean Sea's entire coastline from 70 AD to 395 AD. As for the Norse seafarers of the 12th Century, it was referred to as the Sea of Jerusalem (Jórsalahaf). [2]
