The Varangian Guard are elite soldiers that serve as the personal bodyguards for the Byzantine emperor.
History
In 1111 AD, Emperor Alexios Komnenos invited several of Sigurd Magnusson's men to become members of the Varangian Guard, including the gargoyles Magni and Modi. When Magni shared the news to Angelika, he was confident the offer would be extended to adolescent gargoyle as well, but Angelika ultimately left Constantinople with Demona. Magni and Modi continued to serve Byzantium's emperors until 1195, when Modi fled after it was discovered he was the one responsible for the murder of Abu Jafar Ahmad Ibn Yusuf Ibn Al-Kammad, the Great Palace's archivist. With nothing to keep him there, Magni also left the Varangian Guard, opting to join Angelika and Demona in their travels. ("Fallen From the Ranks...")
Real World Background
Based in the Old Norse væringi (a compound of vár and gengi, meaning "faith" and "companion"), the Varangian Guard served from the 11th to 14th Centuries. [1] As depicted in the comic, soldiers were often recruited from outside nations. There was logic behind having a private guard comprised entirely of outsiders, since this limited any potential political loyalties and ensure any revolts would be suppressed.
The vast majority of Sigurd Magnusson's men stayed in Constantinople. Of the six thousand that set sail with the Norse King in 1107, fewer than a hundred returned to Scandinavia.
