History
When Darkwing Duck and Goliath invaded Demona's warehouse to rescue Morgana Macawber, Morgana expressed attraction towards Goliath - much to Darkwing's chagrin. Demona played on this and unleashed the power of the Green-Eyed Monster to exploit the jealousy that Darkwing was already feeling, manipulating the crime fighter into attacking Goliath. Observing this, Elisa Maza exploited Demona's own jealousy about her new romantic relationship with Goliath, which caused the idol's power to affect the renegade gargoyle as well.
Elisa's distraction bought Squeek and Archie the opportunity they needed to destroy the idol. ("The Green-Eyed Abyss Gazes, Also...")
Characteristics
The Green-Eyed Monster is a cold idol with green emeralds serving as its eyes. It appears to be able to affect feelings of jealousy and envy that already exist, such as when it amped up Darkwing Duck's feelings of jealousy after Morgana made it clear that she found Goliath attractive. Elisa played on this to exploit Demona's feelings of jealousy so that it would affect her, too. Goliath and Elisa remained unaffected.
Real World Background
The green-eyed monster is William Shakespeare's metaphor for jealousy which first appeared in Othello spoken to Othello by Iago:
- O, beware, my lord, of jealousy;
- It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
- The meat it feeds on; that cuckold lives in bliss
- Who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger;
- But, O, what damned minutes tells he o'er
- Who dotes, yet doubts, suspects, yet strongly loves!
The monologue personifies jealousy as a predatory beast that will make those afflicted by it behave irrationally in its service.
