Formentera is a Spanish island in the Mediterranean Sea.
History
In 1109, Sigurd Magnusson's fleet sailed to and raided the cave fortress on the island's cliffside. The gargoyles glided down the cliffside carrying torches to attack the Saracen pirates inside. ("Fortune Favors the Brave...")
Real World Background
Formentera forms part of the Balearic Islands archipelago, along with Ibiza, Mallora, and Menorca.
When King Sigurd and his men attacked the cave fortress, they gathered large piece of wood near the entrance, set them on fire, and suffocated the occupants inside. The raid on the island provided the most plunder in all of King Sigurd's travels.
