Gorlois (pronounced gor-LOY) is the Atlantean word for "gargoyle." It is used as both a singular and a plural.[1]

Real-World Background

The name "Gorlois" also appears in Arthurian legend; the original Gorlois was the Duke of Cornwall during the reign of Uther Pendragon, King Arthur's father. He was married to Igraine and was the father by her of Elaine, Morgause, and Morgana le Fay. Uther lusted after Igraine and went to war with Gorlois over her, resulting in Gorlois' death in battle and Uther begetting Arthur upon Igraine. Greg Weisman has stated that it is not a coincidence in the Gargoyles Universe that Igraine's first husband should have borne this name (and it is worth noting that Tintagel, which legend portrays as one of Gorlois' chief castles, was also the real-life original of Castle Wyvern).
