The ceremonial panther

The ceremonial panther was a panther that would be temporarily captured as part of a Nigerian village's celebration of the legend of the Panther Queen.

History

Traditionally a storyteller would retell the legend at a campfire prior to a great feast. Once the feast was concluded, the ceremonial panther would be released. In 1996, Diane Maza was the visiting storyteller, having been invited by Fara Maku. ("Mark of the Panther")
