Henry IV, Part 1

Henry IV, Part 1, also called The First Part of Henry the Fourth with the Life and Death of Henry Surnamed Hot-Spurr, is a play written by William Shakespeare by 1597 which covers the antics of Falstaff and Prince Hal (the future Henry V) during the reign of his father, King Henry Bolingbroke.

When Hunter first recruited Dingo and Matrix in 1996, she referred to the former by his given name of "Harry Monmouth", the name Henry 'Hotspur' Percy calls Prince Hal in Act V, Scenes ii and iv. ("Strangers")

Real World Background

As with most of Shakespeare's history plays, the primary source that he is believed to have consulted the 1587 edition of Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland. It is also believed that Shakespeare was familiar with the anonymous 1594 play, The Famous Victories of Henry the Fifth.

Production Background

Unlike Gargoyles characters that are direct adaptations from other Shakespeare plays (most notably from Macbeth and A Midsummer Night's Dream), Henry IV, Part 1's characters have been reinterpreted in the character analogues of Dingo, Falstaff, and Points. It is understood that, for example, Dingo is not the historical Henry V of the Gargoyles Universe, although he does share the non-regnal name of Harry (of) Monmouth. ("Strangers")
