Real World Background

After his first symptoms began to develop at 39, Franklin Roosevelt was diagnosed with poliomyelitis and remained paralyzed from the waist down. He and others kept his condition private throughout his life, until he publicly referenced it for the first time in twenty years before Congress in 1945, about a month before his death. The only U.S. President to serve more than two terms, Franklin Roosevelt's presidency is considered one of the most influential in American history, covering significant events from the Great Depression to World War II. Further, he and his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, were instrumental in the creation of the United Nations.
