Mutate Project

The Mutate Project was commissioned by David Xanatos in 1995 and carried out by Dr. Anton Sevarius to create a creature based on a gargoyle.

Sevarius moved forward with the plan by combining the strength, speed, and agility of a jungle cat along with a bat's ability to fly. But as the energy needs of the wing muscles would require the creature to eat the equivalent of three cows a day to maintain its strength, Sevarius also adapted the electric eel into his design. The last piece of the puzzle was a human test subject in order to provide human intelligence.

Sevarius "recruited" three humans to inject with the mutagenic formula: Fred Sykes, Maggie Reed, and another human who is, as yet, unnamed. [1] Xanatos also manipulated Derek Maza into becoming part of the experiment. ("Metamorphosis")
