Disneyland is an American theme park in Anaheim, California.

History

In the Dreamtime, Dingo expressed that he always wanted to go to Disneyland. ("Walkabout")

Real World Background

First open on July 17, 1955, it is the only Disney theme park to be designed and constructed under the supervision of Walt Disney himself.

In addition to Main Street USA, the original park layout included Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland. Holidayland was added in 1957, before closing in 1961 and giving way to today's New Orleans Square in 1966. Additional lands now include Bear Country in 1972 (renamed Critter Country in 1988 and Bayou County in 2024), Mickey's Toontown in 1993, and Star Wars: Galaxy Edge in 2019. The entire park is surrounded by the Disneyland Railroad to help park attendees navigate the more-than-one-hundred acre park.

When Greg Weisman was a child, his family took Douglas Bader and his wife to Disneyland. [1]

Rides, shops, and restaurants are featured in every themed land. From Disneyland's opening in 1955, a lettered ticket was introduced, with the most popular attractions designated C-tickets, then D-tickets in 1956 and finally the infamous E-ticket in 1959. The character Elisa Maza would, in fact, compare the World Travelers' rough arrival at Wyvern Hill, Scotland as an "E-Ticket ride". By 1982, the lettered ticket system had been phased out with tickets for general admission. ("Shadows of the Past") [2]

An unexhaustive list of Disneyland's attractions over the years include, with their letter ticket in parantheses:

  • Adventureland has the Jungle Cruise (E), which is as old as the theme park and Indiana Jones Adventure, which opened in 1995. There was Aladdin's Oasis and Dinner Show, which opened in 1993 (and later closed in 2008 and 1997, respectively).
  • Frontierland has Big Thunder Railroad (E) which debuted in 1979 and the Mark Twain Riverboat (D), which opened with the theme park in 1955.
  • Fantasyland is at the center of the entire theme park and in the center of Fantasyland is the Sleepy Beauty Castle (A). There is also dark ride named Alice in Wonderland (B), which opened in 1958 and is based on the 1951 film of the same name. 1959 saw the introduction of the Matterhorn Bobsleds (E). From 1963 to 2006, theme park attendees could attempt to pull Excalibur from Disney's Sword in the Stone right next to King Arthur's Carousel (A).
  • Tomorrowland has Space Mountain (E) which opened in 1977, Autopia which debuted with the theme park in 1955, and 1959's Submarine Voyage (E), which was renamed Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage in 2007.
  • New Orleans Square has both the Haunted Mansion (E), which opened in 1967 and Pirates of the Caribbean (E), which opened in 1969.
  • Bayou Country is home to the log ride formerly known as Splash Mountain which opened in 1989 and was renovated as Tiana's Bayou Adventure in 2024 after the 2009 film, The Princess and the Frog.
  • Mickey's Toontown features Chip 'n' Dale's GADGETcoaster, featuring the characters from the Disney Afternoon show.

The first time the theme park unexpectedly closed was in response to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The second occurred in 1970, when a coordinated protest to the Vietnam War overwhelmed the theme park and led to twenty-three arrests. Additional unexpected closures were the result of winter storms in 1987 and 1992. [3] Its fifth closure was in response to the attacks on September 11, 2001. [4] Most recently it closed for a year from March 2020 to April 2021 as a result of the COVID pandemic. [5]
