The gameboard was made of folded paper with eighty-two spaces laid out across the island of Manhattan, featuring three subway lines that could take a player in any direction. Spread out across the board were twelve spaces with Elisa Maza and Demona's face (six apiece) and four Building spaces. One space directed a player further from the finish line through a 'one-way alley.'
Player tokens included cardboard cutouts of Broadway, Brooklyn, Goliath, and Lexington.
The spinner was divided into three spaces, where players determined if they would move one, two, or three spaces.
Players had to break up the cardboard sheet containing the combined thirty action cards along their perforated lines.
Instructions
Object of the Game
Players must glide quickly along the streets of Manhattan to stop Xanatos and Demona. If they do not reach Xanatos Building in 20 minutes, Xanatos will unleash the "Steel Clan" robots and destroy the Gargoyles!
Game Rules
(Read before playing!)
Game Setup: 20 minutes of interactive game footage follows the movie. Pause the video immediately after the movie and restart after reading the instructions.
The Spinner: Spin to see who goes first, second, third, etc. Players spin and advance on the gameboard the indicated number of spaces.
Action Cards: There are 3 sets of 10 Action Cards — Building Cards, Demona "Wild" Cards, & Elisa "Badge Cards. When a player lands on an Action Card space, take that card and do what it says!
Subway Tunnels: When you land on a Subway space, follow the tunnel all the way to the other side. Sometimes you'll shoot forward. Sometimes you'll go backward! And watch out for the ONE WAY alley!
VCR Interaction: After starting the video, every few minutes you will hear a lightning strike. This is your signal to FREEZE! The player who last spin must then listen carefully and follow the commands of Xanatos, Elisa, or Demona on the video screen.
If you are counting out spacs on the board, finish your move — but do NOT follow up any "action" card instructions or move through any tunnel. (If you re moving through a tunnel when the lightning strikes — continue to the other side.)
[NOTE: The only exception to the FREEZE rule is the last square before the Xanatos Building. You must still go back 10 spaces before following the video commands!]
Defeating Xanatos: YOu must spin the EXACT number needed to land on the Xanatos Building and win the game — and become the new leader of the Gargoyle clan!
The first player to land on the Xanatos Building must then stop the VCR to prevent Xanatos from out his plan!
GOOD LUCK! Start the video...and hurry!
Interactive Video Synopsis
Following the credits for the 80-minute cut of "Awakening", the video asks if the players have read the instructions and set up the gameboard. It then continues, reminding players of each of the Action cards and how to follow the card's instructions when they land on the appropriate space. It then reminds the players how the subways work, with the risk that they can take a player forward or backward across the gameboard. The video reminds players, that to win, they must land on the "Xanatos Building" with the exact spin. It further warns players to watch out for the penultimate space, which will send a player back ten spaces. Lastly, the video reminds the players that when Lightning strikes (with the accompanying audio and visual cue) it is time for players to pause the game and follow the video's instructions from the characters.
With that, the game begins.
Xanatos flies to the Eyrie Building, introducing himself, nd revealing how he plans to destroy the gargoyles in twenty minutes unless the players can stop him. If they do not succeed, Xanatos will unleash his Steel Clan and Goliath and the rest will have no choice but to surrender. He then laughs maniacally, confident that no one can stop him now.
The players are then instructed to start playing. A countdown clock is on the screen, which overlooks Manhattan, reminding players how much time is left. When the clock shows 18:40 left on the clock . . . LIGHTNING STRIKES!
Doors to the Great Hall open and Demona makes herself known, making clear how she cannot allow the players to thwart Xanatos's plan. Her own machinations depend on Xanatos's, and therefore, the last player who spun must now go back six spaces. A crack of lightning and the players return to the game, with the countdown clock now looking over the New York Harbor to Cyberbiotics Tower. With 16:41 left to save the night, LIGHTNING STRIKES once more!
Castle doors open, and Elisa Maza enters, reminding players she can't save the gargoyles alone. To help her defeat Xanatos, the player who just spun can pick up a Badge Card. She reminds that player to hurry! Lightning strikes again and players continue their play. The countdown clock now looks over Manhattan from the top of the Castle, above the clouds. 14:40 is all that remains when LIGHTNING STRIKES again!
Admonishing the players for thinking "that detective" can help them, Demona swoops in to cast a spell with the Grimorum Arcanorum, freezing the player who just spun. The player cannot move until Demona releases them. Another Lightning strike sends the players back to their game, with the countdown clock back on the screen, looking up and the Manhattan night sky. The music grows more tense as time slips away. With 12:43 left in the game, LIGHTNING STRIKES!
Demona has returned and releases the player she froze, tossing them aside. Before the players can return playing she warns them all that she can freeze any of them at any time. Lightning brightens the night sky and, now from Castle Wyvern, the countdown clock and the approaching dawn remind everyone what little time they have. Suddenly, LIGHTNING STRIKES with only 10:43 left!
ELisa arrives in her car, urging players to hurry while she avoids become street pizza. She tells the player that just spun to go to the closest subway and hop on the train, hoping that it'll send them in the right direction. Another bolt of lightning in the sky, and players return to the game. But things are looking ominous from the base of Xanatos's skyscraper. With 8:52 left on the clock, LIGHTNING STRIKES and Xanatos has returned, pausing the game.
Everything is falling into place, but the players are not far away, so Xanatos knows he needs to intervene somehow. Owen Burnett suggests to his boss that Demona probably has something in mind, and she suggests that the player who just spun must go back eight spaces. She marvels at the Steel Clan robots about to be unleashed as a lightning strike returns players to their game. Now, from the Castle, Goliath looks over the island of Manhattan, hope slowly fading. With only 7:02 remaining in the game, LIGHTNING STRIKES and Elisa arrives, seemingly apprehended by Owen.
While she might be in check, Elisa's determined not to let Xanatos succeed. She tells Owen that the last player who spun can more forward five spaces. Owen is unfazed and lets the player move forward; Xanatos's plan is too far along now. Lightning sends the players back to the game, with the countdown clock alongside one of the city's many architectural gargoyles. With the clock reading 5:09, LIGHTNING STRIKES and Demona returns to the Castle, with zero patience for the human trying to spoil everything.
Demona tells Goliath that the player who just spun must pick up a Demona "Wild Card" card and do what it says. The electrical storm continues and so do the players, with the countdown clock back on the screen looking downtown. With 3:27 left on the clock, LIGHTNING STRIKES!
Seeing how the players still haven't made it to the Castle yet, Owen begins to point out the obvious to Elisa, but the detective remains optimistic, telling the next player, whether Owen likes it or not, to pick up a badge card and follow the instructions. Golden rivers make islands of the city's skyscrapers as players return to their game. Eighteen minutes have now past when LIGHTNING STRIKES and the TWO MINUTE WARNING! blares on the screen.
Xanatos and Owen watch from his office, knowing the players don't have much time to stop him as they return to the game. The countdown clock races to a finish as Demona, Xanatos, and Owen stand by the Steel Clan, waiting to finish off the gargoyles. With 30 seconds left on the clock, the screen begins to bleep an alert and at 15 seconds, another alert chimes: TIME RUNNING OUT!
But, with a final LIGHTNING STRIKE, Xanatos informs Elisa that the players are too late to stop him and his Steel Clan from teaching the gargoyles who their "true master" is. Despite their failure, Elisa is confident there will be a next time, but Xanatos isn't listening. "Attack," he orders his robots.
As the gargoyles try to survive the Steel Clan, the video informs the players that while Xanatos has won this time, there's still a chance to stop him. Thanks to the Grimorum and the modern sorcery that is the rewind button, players can go back in time! Those who wish to make the attempt merely need to say "Orday Rewindum Tapus" when the words appear on the screen (for a second time) then rewind the tape to the start of the game, and play once more to defeat the billionaire.
Tidbits
Elisa "Badge" cards often sent a player forward while Demona "Wild" cards sent a player backward (or even lose a turn), and Building cards could lead a player in either direction.
Brendan and Margot make a cameo when Demona freezes a player, in a clip used from "Awakening: Part Three".
