Goliath's pouch in 1996.

Goliath's pouch was used to carry the Eye of Odin and the Phoenix Gate after defeating the Archmage on Avalon. It is affixed to his belt. ("Avalon" Part Three)

History

After Angel broke the Phoenix Gate in half so she and Goliath could hold on to their halves as tokens of their love, Goliath carried his half of the Gate in his pouch. When a TimeDancing Brooklyn appeared in 997, he sought out Goliath's sleeping form, hoping to take his half of the Gate to return to his time. However, thanks to the Spell of Humility, the pouch was stone and the younger gargoyle did not wish to damage his sleeping leader. ("Vows", "Tyrants")

Goliath's half of the Phoenix Gate would be kept in his pouch until Demona's attempt on Elisa's life in early 1995. [1] He later opted for the storage closet in the Clock Tower to store the various Keys to Power, until they were stolen by an enchanted Demona and Macbeth. ("High Noon")

Following the defeat of the Archmage, Goliath used his pouch once more to carry the Eye of Odin and the Phoenix Gate throughout the World Tour until he returned the Eye to Odin himself and released the Phoenix Gate into the timestream. ("Eye of the Storm", "Future Tense")

Production Background

The pouch is a retcon. Greg Weisman admits they didn't come up with the notion until they produced the Avalon Tryptich and then retconned it so that Goliath had always carried it. [2]
