Real World Background
Edmund supported his uncle Donalbain in the war with Duncan II after Malcolm Canmore's death; after Edgar overthrew Donalbain, Edmund was briefly imprisoned, but was later freed, and entered a monastery (technically, a priory) at Montacute in Somerset. (He reportedly requested to be buried in chains upon his passing, as penance for helping to bring about his half-brother Duncan II's death.)
