Donnchad in 1093

Donnchad was the eldest son of Malcolm Canmore and Ingibjorg. He is the half-brother of Paul and Erlend Thorfinnson, Edward, Edmund, Edelred, Edgar, Alexandair, Edith, Mary, and Dauid, and the brother of Donald Canmore.

History

In 1093, Donnchad accompanied his father, uncle, and brothers to Northumbria. There, he participated in the sacking of Alnwick, razing it to the ground. Hearing his half-brothers Edmund and Edelred share their discontent, he argued their actions were a "necessary evil". He later joined his father and brothers in the massacre of the sleeping Northumbria Clan.

During the Battle of Alnwick, he commanded his brother Domnall to find and protect their father, but their efforts proved futile: Malcolm was slain that evening. With the crown prince Edward also killed in battle, Scotland was plunged into a succession crisis. Malcolm's younger brother, Donalbain, laid his claim for the crown, but as the eldest of all Malcolm's children, Donnchad opposed his uncle. ("Fools Rush In...")

Real World Background

Donnchad (also known as Duncan II) was surrendered to William the Conqueror as a hostage after the Treaty of Abernathy in 1072, and lived at the English court until William's death in 1087. During his time in England, Malcolm III designated Edward as his heir presumptive. When he was released, Donnchad was knighted by William's oldest son, Robert Curthose.

As depicted in the Gargoyles comic, Donnchad and his uncle Donalbain fought over the Scottish throne upon Malcolm III's death.

Donnchad managed to drive Donalbain to the Scottish Highlands, and was crowned king at Scone in 1094. But Donnchad's reign was short-lived when he was slain in battle on November 12, 1094, fighting Donalbain's supporters. Following his death, his half-brother Edgar would stake his own claim for the crown, in opposition to their uncle.
