Donalbain was the second known son of King Duncan, and the younger brother of King Malcolm Canmore.
History
Following Macbeth's ascension to the throne of Scotland in 1040, Donalbain was taken to Ireland for his own safety. [1] While there, he learned to appreciate gargoyles due to his experiences with the Irish Clans. He returned to Scotland sometime after his brother deposed Macbeth. ("Fools Rush In...")
By 1093, he promised to watch over Queen Margaret's "brood" of princes during their journey to England. It was in Northumbria that he participated in the sacking of Alnwick, though he did not revel in it as much as some of his nephews. When the King instructed the various princes to slaughter the Northumbria Clan, Prince Donalbain unsuccessfully made a feeble effort to dissuade his brother from the wanton violence. After the ambush by Robert de Mowbray in what became the Battle of Alnwick, King Malcolm and his designated heir, Edward, were killed. Without a clear successor, Donalbain and his nephew, Donnchad, staked their separate claims for the throne. One nephew, Prince Edmund, would support Donalbain's claim. Donalbain eventually won the crown, becoming Donald III. ("Fools Rush In...")

Real World Background
It was shortly after Queen Margaret's death that Donalbain laid seige to Edinburgh Castle. It was during this invasion that, as mentioned in the comic, Princes Edgar, Alexandair, and Dauid either fled (or were banished) to England for their own safety. In May 1094, Donnchad successfully dethroned his uncle, but the reign was brief, and by November that year Donalbain was King once more, ruling until 1097. His only known child was a daughter, Bethóc ingen Domnaill Bain. With no known sons, Edmund was likely Donalbain's designated heir, but ultimately it was his other nephew Edgar that won the crown.
Like his father Duncan and brother Malcolm Canmore, Donalbain is featured in Shakespeare's Macbeth.
