Sigurd Magnusson was the last of the Viking Kings of Norway.
History
Sigurd Magnusson was born in 1089. When he was nine, Sigurd and his father, Magnus Olafsson, overthrew Paul and Erlend Thorfinnson and Sigurd replaced them as Earl of Orkney. He became King of Norway at fourteen years of age and, five years into his reign, he commanded a fleet five thousand men (and five gargoyles) on sixty ships, sailing for Constantinople.
During his voyage, he carried a "good luck" charm, the Eye of Odin. But during the Siege of Sidon, a Saracen struck the talisman, shattering the charm's setting. Despite his army's victory, Sigurd lost his nerve by March 1111, and was ready to return to Norway. After selling his ships to the Byzantine Emperor, Alexios Komnenos, he set off with a fraction of his men on horseback with only one gargoyle, Skade, accompanying them. Real World Background
Sigurd is a distant cousin (specifically three times removed on his father's side) of Ingibjorg, making him kin to his predecessors as Earl of Orkney, Paul and Erlend Thorfinnson.
Before his death in 1130, Sigurd suffered from debilitating physical and mental illness, ranging from losing his footing to more erratic behavior, including depression. He was reputedly aware of his 'madness' and the impact it was having on the royal court. [1]
