Puck's flute was a magic flute crafted by Puck. It resembles a simple tube with holes carved on one side, but it is not clear what the flute is made from or how it is played. The powers of the flute are as yet unknown.

History

In 971 AD, the flute was in the hoard of the dragon known as Wyvern. When the dragon attacked Wyvern Hill, the Archmage took the opportunity to send his apprentice Angel to retrieve the flute from the unguarded hoard. The gargoyle used a Scrying Glass to locate the flute among all of the treasure. She brought it to the Archmage afterwards. ("The Pledge")

Sometime during the Middle Ages, Puck acquired the flute once more and used it when he took on the role of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. ("Acquisitions")

By 1996, the flute was in the possession of Oberon who used the flute to help the gargoyle beast Boudicca track Puck's scent when Puck did not attend the Gathering. Oberon finally tracked him down to New York City. Puck sensed the flute just as Oberon began to ban him from Avalon (and of his powers), and mystically pocketed the flute from the Lord of the Third Race. For the next year and a half, he played the flute for the infant Alexander Fox Xanatos, until Demona identified the instrument as one of the new Three Keys to Power, and cornered him (as Owen Burnett) in July 1997. ("The Gathering" Part One, "Acquisitions")

After acquiring Cleopatra's Necklace, Demona donned Puck's Flute last at her her townhouse, commanding the flute's notes to be her proxy, enchanting all humans to serve her will and directions. Demona managed to subjugate the humans in the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn before she was faced off against Goliath at LaGuardia Airport, who, grabbing the flute, began to loosen her control of the three Keys, reminding the rogue gargoyle of her own hints of humanity. He was soon joined by Angela and Turquesa and the three separated Demona from the three Keys, defeating her. Coldfire then directed the three gargoyles to use the Three Keys to release the city's enthralled humans from Demona's geas. Once the spell was broken, Goliath snapped the flute into two, and later that night returned the destroyed talisman to Owen, who smiled at the broken pieces. ("Unequivocal Success", "Queen of All She Surveys")

Characteristics

According to Demona, the flute's mystic melody could enthrall anyone within earshot. Playing the instrument is typically how someone accessed its power, but with the combined might of Gungnir and Cleopatra's Necklace, Demona merely had to express her intentions for the flute to emit its entrancing notes. ("Unequivocal Success")

Production Background

Greg Weisman had intended for the flute to reappear in "The Gathering" Part Two, in which Puck would have used the flute to temporarily subdue Oberon. Weisman wrote how he regrets not using the flute during the episode. [1]
