Real World Background

The historical MacBodhe could have been either Bodhe's son or grandson. The uncertainty is evident in the ambiguity in how his death was recorded in Ruaidhri Ó Luinín's 15th Century manuscript, the Annals of Ulster. Written in Irish as M. m. Boete m. Cinaedha do marbad la Mael Colaim m. Cinaedha, where the 'M' could be understood as either an abbreviation for "son of" or as a name in its own right.

This means the text recording the year 1033 could be translated as "the son of the son of Boite son of Cinaed was killed by Mael Coluim son of Cinaed" or as "[name beginning with M] son of Boite son of Cinaed was killed by Mael Coluim son of Cinaed". [3]
