Back at the large rock, Elisa continues to sleep. Bronx senses something. Sniffing the air, he approaches a hillside and growls. Something is not right. Suddenly, a concealed doorway opens in the hill and a bright light reveals a silhouetted figure. Bronx growls. Nearby, Elisa wakes up and is alarmed. She doesn't know where she is or where the skiff has gone. Bronx growls and leaps at the mysterious figure, but is stopped by an energy blast which throws him back at Elisa's feet.

Not long after, Goliath and Angela glide back to the spot they had left their companions. They are alarmed to see Bronx unconscious and Elisa gone. Bronx stirs and whines in pain and confusion. He runs over to the hillside and sniffs around it aimlessly. Goliath notes that he seems disoriented and may not be able to pick up Elisa's scent. They will have to search for her the hard way. He orders his companions to search for Elisa, covering as much ground as possible, and returning a half hour before dawn. The three take off in different directions.

Not far away, a jeep moves down a dusty road passing more of the stone heads. The driver, Lydia Duane, tells her companion, Arthur Morwood-Smyth that ahead is an odd sight: a woman walking down the road alone at night. It is Elisa! Morwood-Smyth agrees that it is unusual as they drive past Elisa and guesses that perhaps she became seperated from a tour group. They turn the car around and go back to her. Pulling up alongside Elisa, Morwood-Smyth asks her if she often wanders alone at night. Elisa is alarmed and asks who they are. Duane introduces them and explains that they are archaelogists here on holiday. Elisa wants to know where "here" is, and, for that matter, "Who I am..."

Back at the car, Morwood-Smyth asks Elisa if she truly cannot remember her own name. Elisa explains that she can't remember anything. Frustrated, she admits she feels lucky she know how to talk. Duane tells her that they can at least inform her of her whereabouts and hopefully that will jog her memory. The natives, the two archaelogists explain, called this island Rapa Nui, though in modern times it is more commonly known as Easter Island. Elisa is shocked. How did she find herself in the middle of the Pacific Ocean?! They can't answer that for her, but have no intention of leaving her to wander about in her condition. Elisa accepts and admits that she could use a ride. Gliding high above, Goliath watches Elisa get into the car and is relieved that she appears unharmed but wonders why she would choose to go off with these people. As the jeep drives off, he follows by air.

At a large building, The Islander Hotel, Elisa explains to her two new companions and another man that, according to her wallet, her name is Elisa Maza and she is a New York City policewoman. Duane suddenly realizes why Elisa seemed familiar. They have met before! Duane asks Elisa if she remembers the Scrolls of Merlin. Elisa, frustrated, says that she doesn't. The new man, Dr. Arnada, asks if she knows what a scroll even is. Elisa does, of course. The doctor tells her that she should be grateful her memory of general knowledge appears to be intact. Elisa is unenthusiastic as the doctor checks her eyes. She seems healthy to him. He's not a psychiatrist, but would guess that she must've suffered some form of severe emotional trauma and that her mind is temporarily blocking things that are too painful to remember. "You mean like my whole life?!" Elisa exclaims. Outside, Goliath is scaling the walls of the building. As the doctor checks Elisa's heart with a stethoscope, Duane asks him if there is nothing more he can do for Elisa. He admits that he is out of his depth. However, his brother in Honolulu is a neurologist and can check for any brain damage and refer her to other specialists if necessary. Morwood-Smyth finds this a wonderful plan. He grabs the phone and begins making arrangements to get Elisa on the next flight out. Goliath, speaking from the balcony, tells the humans that he cannot allow Elisa to be sent away. He enters the room to the shock of all. Elisa is terrified. Goliath tells her that there is no time to explain and she must come with him. He reaches for her and Elisa pulls back. As the others grather behind Elisa, she draws her gun on Goliath and orders him to stay back or she will shoot him where he stands.

"Sentinel" is the fifty-second televised episode of the series Gargoyles, and the thirty-ninth episode of Season 2. It originally aired on February 19, 1996.

Summary

Main Plot

Elisa is asleep when the travellers reach Easter Island. The alien sentinel, Nokkar, mistakes the gargoyles as hostile beings sent by his Space-Spawn enemies. He gives Elisa temporary amnesia in order to clean out the false memories that he believes the gargoyles have given her. Walking aimlessly around the island, Elisa encounters the archaeologists Lydia Duane and Arthur Morwood-Smyth, and goes with them to their hotel room to be checked out by a doctor. Goliath retrieves her, but she is afraid and confused, and is hostile towards him. He tries to remind her of their friendship, but is captured by Nokkar along with Angela and Bronx. Nokkar is about to kill the gargoyles, but Elisa releases them and protects them from Nokkar, acting upon her instincts of loyalty to her friends.

Subplots

Earth has been a strategic outpost for the N'Kai against the Space Spawn many centuries ago. Nokkar has been at his post for eons, and refuses to abandon it.

Nokkar misses the company of the natives that he had befriended long ago, and who had erected the famous stone statues based on his appearance. Elisa suggests that Nokkar befriend the two archaeologists and Dr. Arnada so that he wouldn't be lonely while he continues standing vigil at his post.

Act One

Goliath, Angela, Bronx, and Elisa find themselves in the open ocean aboard their skiff. Goliath looks ahead and remarks on the unusual sight ahead. He asks Elisa if she has any idea where they are. There is no response. Angela notes that Elisa has fallen asleep. Goliath is happy to see it. Elisa guards them while they sleep and forgets to rest herself. The gargoyles look ahead to their next destination: an island with giant stone faces. As the reach the shore, Angela remarks that the stone forms are unlike anything she has ever seen. Goliath reminds her that Avalon has sent them to this place and they should try to find out why.

Elsewhere, from a control room, the arrival of the travelers is being watched on a video screen.

Goliath carries the sleeping Elisa ashore and places her on the ground near a large rock. He orders Bronx to remain with Elisa and guard her and the beast happily agrees. Goliath and Angela move on to explore the island. They continue to be watched by a remote camera which descends into the ground and is quickly hidden by a sliding clump of grass.

The gargoyles continue investigating the island. They come to one of the massive stone heads. Angela examines it closely and notes that the stone looks so old. Goliath wonders if they were perhaps erected by an ancient people to ward off long forgotten enemies.

Back at the large rock, Elisa continues to sleep. Bronx senses something. Sniffing the air, he approaches a hillside and growls. Something is not right. Continuity

Lydia Duane and Arthur Morwood-Smyth appear for the first time since their introduction in "A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time".

The Holy Grail, which Elisa and Goliath casually mention in this episode, will appear briefly on-stage in "Rock of Ages".

Tidbits

Although Elisa muses, at the end of this episode, over the possibility that the Space-Spawn War could be long since over, that (naturally) is not the case. Greg Weisman had planned a "sequel series" to Gargoyles entitled Gargoyles 2198, in which the Space-Spawn would finally reach Earth in the year 2198 and conquer it. Nokkar, chagrined over having failed to spot their approach (the Space-Spawn's technology had become so advanced by this time that their ships couldn't be picked up by his monitoring systems) throws himself into the struggle to free Earth from the Space-Spawn, joining with a handful of other characters (including Demona, Owen, a time-travelling Brooklyn, and descendants of Goliath, Delilah, Natsilane, and Zafiro) to form a resistance movement.

In a noteworthy animation nit, Elisa's black t-shirt is shown to be long-sleeved while she's taking the tour of Nokkar's spaceship. However, in the immediately preceding episode, "The Green", she was wearing a short-sleeved shirt instead.

For reasons unspecified, this episode wasn't been included on the Disney YouTube Channel, disneysshows when the others were available.

Disney Plus has the episode placed between "Mark of the Panther" and "Pendragon".

Toon Disney/Disney XD Edits

The scene where Elisa pulls a gun on Goliath goes to commercial prematurely leaving out her saying "Not another step or I'll shoot you right where you stand."
