Summary

Main Plot

The World Travellers return once again to Avalon, where they have safe haven for a time. The peace is shattered by the dramatic entrance of Oberon, Titania, and the Weird Sisters. Oberon seeks to regain his island for the coming Gathering, and orders the Avalon Clan to leave. When they refuse, he threatens to bury them all alive, but Titania convinces him to give them a fair chance to defend themselves. He orders Goliath, Angela, and Gabriel to challenge him, and then proceeds to chase them around the island. The gargoyles put up a good fight, but Oberon proves too powerful and they are defeated. When the four return to the palace, Guardian, Princess Katharine, Elisa, and Ophelia are ready for Oberon with an Iron Bell, forged during the chase thanks to a clue provided by Titania. Tom strikes the bell until Oberon is on his knees, but can't bring himself to kill him. Impressed with Tom's generosity, Oberon grants the clan permission to stay.

Subplots

Elisa expresses her desire to return home to Manhattan.

For 1,001 years, Oberon ordered Titania and the Children of Oberon to be sent out into the world to live among mortals, in order for them to learn humility. While Titania and others have learned their lessons, Oberon had not, thinking he had nothing to learn.

Titania offers to be Oberon's queen as an incentive for him to allow the Avalon Clan to defend themselves. Though Oberon loses in the end, Titania still takes him as her husband.

Ophelia wonders whether they have the right to use the bell against the Lord of Avalon.

Oberon grants immunity from his magic to the Avalon and Manhattan Clans and pronounces them his honor guards.

The Story

Previously on Gargoyles

Act One

From the mists, the World Travelers return to Avalon. Elisa is growing weary of seeing the enchanted island once again. Disembarking on the beach, Angela also shares her frustration, crossing her arms and wondering aloud if this "Manhattan" is just a myth. As Goliath moves the skiff away from the shore, he expresses the silver lining that at least the four of them are safe for the time being. As Elisa spots the Avalon Clan to welcome them back, Bronx runs up to see Boudicca. Gabriel shares that the gargoyle beast can smell their return, even from Oberon's Palace. Goliath asks if Avalon has been peaceful since their last departure, and Gabriel confirms that it has been peaceful and quiet. In all honesty, Gabriel itches for a little adventure, prompting Angela to invite him to hop on the skiff – guaranteeing that her rookery will be anything but bored.

As they make the trek to Oberon's Palace, Elisa shares that, every time they journey through Avalon's mists, she longs to see the Brooklyn Bridge or the Statue of Liberty. Princess Katharine tries to comfort the detective that at least they have Avalon to come home to, but Elisa points out that Avalon isn't their home. From the parapets, various members of the Avalon Clan greet the World Travelers, but the hospitality is cut short with the sudden appearance of dark clouds covering the night sky and Moon. It is a veritable thunderstorm, with the wind picking up and lighting striking above the palace towers. The ground begins to shake below them, and a large mound of earth begins to erupt in front of the Palace, knocking the Princess, Guardian, Elisa, Goliath, Angela, Gabriel, and Ophelia off their feet. Lightning hits the large mound twice and smoke begins to rise from the impact. A third lightning strike reveals two otherworldly, yet regal, figures on the dirt dais. Before them, the Weird Sisters suddenly appear. Phoebe, Luna, and Seline confirm to their "lord" what they previously reported: humans and gargoyles have settled on Avalon. But their lordly sire literally waves them off; the mortals are but a minor nuisance. But, matter-of-factly, even nuisances will have to leave. Guardian whispers to Goliath, "If that pair are keeping company with those three screech owls, I'm not about to trust them." Guardian steps forward and acknowledges that they regrettably are already acquainted with the Weird Sisters. Drawing his sword, he asks the regal pair to declares themselves. The lordly figure looks on, intrigued by the exchange. The Weird Sisters are less than amused, with Seline calling the mortals an "insolent infestation". Phoebe spins their last encounter that the three warned the mortals to leave, which Guardian immediately refutes as a lie, pointing out that the Weird Sisters attacked them first.

Finding the whole argument beneath him, the haughty lord orders silence, conjuring a golden brace over Guardian's mouth behind his helmet's visor. As Guardian struggles to take brace off (to no avail), Princess Katharine demands to know what's brought about this outrage. Bronx and Boudicca, sensing a threat before them, begin barking. They leap at the two powerful newcomers only to find their hindlegs chained to the ground and unable to reach the dirt dais. Attempting to sound magnanimous, the lordly figure declares that the mortals have an hour to leave Avalon. Before he can explain what will happen if they refuse to leave, Princess Katharine advocates that Avalon is their home now; they have no place to go. "That is none of our concern," the lord shrugs off. Gabriel also speaks up, explaining that Avalon has been deserted for over a thousand years – just who is this pair to insist they leave? Ophelia chimes in, threatening the two will be thrown out if they don't leave themselves. "You dare much to speak so to us," the lordly figure points out. Without a care for the implied decorum demanded of the mortals, Gabriel leaps at the regal pair, only to be shoved away with a blast of magical energy, flinging Gabriel backwards into Goliath, sending both to the ground, several feet away. Elisa pulls out her gun and takes aim and the lordly figure actually looks concerned for once. Just as the situation is about to escalate beyond measure, Goliath intervenes, directing Elisa's gun away from her intended target. Goliath reminds his friends and rookery children that while these strangers "fail at courtesy" they don't have to do the same. Gabriel insists the strangers started it and Angela points out how unfair their demands are: "Who are they to tell us what to do?" she asks. Turning to the two strangers, Goliath explains that the Avalon Clan might better understand what's being asked of them if they knew who the strangers were. Finally introducing himself, the lordly figure declares that he is Oberon, Lord of the Third Race and Ruler of Avalon. Taking the lady's hand next to him, Oberon introduces her as Titania, his Once and Future Queen. He explains that they have come to reclaim their home, and now gesturing to the gargoyles about him he assures them that if "intruders will not leave their realm, then they may stay – as part of it." Every mortals' foot is suddenly swallowed by the Palace and grounds.

As they struggle, Titania suddenly interjects and recalls how Oberon once commanded a millennium ago that his Children were to spend time with the mortals. Oberon corrects her that its been 1,001 years ago, as the mortals understand time. As Titania points out how that much time is enough for even Puck to "mend his manners", the gargoyles have now sunk waist-deep into the Palace. As Goliath struggles to keep Elisa from sinking entirely, Titania explains how she followed Oberon's command – she lived with the mortals, walked among them, and has now come to know them very well. Oberon turns and asks Titania if she's actually grown concern for mortals, reminding her how her disdain for them was the reason why he divorced her and why he banished his Children to live among them to learn humility? The mortals in question are barely managing to keep their heads from being submerged; the Weird Sisters look on, satisfied with the sight before them. Titania admits that what he speaks is true enough, but reasons that perhaps Oberon has not learned his own lesson. Oberon disagrees, reminding Titania that he lived among the mortals as well for the past millennium. As he becomes more drawn in to his discussion with Titania, Avalon's consumption of the mortals has slowed. Titania then reasons that, if Oberon has learned the same lesson as Titania and his Children, then the mortals should be given an opportunity to save themselves. At a whisper, Titania sets the stage: Oberon will fight them, but fairly. He'll reduce his power to give the mortals a fighting chance. Oberon is unconvinced; why toy with the mortals when he can wipe them off Avalon with but a gesture? Titania then sets the stakes: if he wins, Titania will stand by his side again. Oberon's full attention now captured, he asks if Titania truly intends to be his wife once more and wear his ring should he win the bout. She confirms it: not only will he be her lord, but her husband as well. But Titania warns him that, if the mortals win "and sound the knell of your defeat", then some other ring will be Oberon's reward. Princess Katharine catches Titania's terms, even when neck-deep into the ground. Agreeing to the "amusing bargain", Oberon commands the magical island to release its death-grip on the mortals. Arms crossed, the Weird Sisters are now annoyed with the sudden turn of events.

Now free, Goliath steps to the dirt dais and thanks Titania for the opportunity. Oberon commends the gargoyle for thanking her while he can. Goliath then insists that none of them wish to battle with him, and Oberon forces their hand: "Do it, or die where you stand." Angela and Gabriel quickly counsel with Goliath, and the three realize that, while not much of a choice, is still better than none. Goliath agrees to the game. Titania then declares that Goliath, Angela, and Gabriel will be the mortals' champions to face Lord Oberon. She then levels the playing field, literally, with the dirt dais lowering itself as she rhymes:

"Avalon's Lord, be thou enchained,
thy power to Child's strength restrained"
'til hunt be done and issue known,
this contest win by craft alone."

Oberon allows the three gargoyles a head start, but warns him that is the last of his favors. He fires a bolt of energy from his hand at the champions, ordering them to go. As the three gargoyles race off on all-fours, Oberon smiles. This won't be much of a challenge.

Act Two

Now gliding, Gabriel shares how much he doesn't like running away from a fight. Goliath advises him to consider it a "strategic withdrawal" and that much is true; the three must buy themselves some time. Angela doesn't see the point – Titania said that Oberon is no stronger than a child now. But Goliath corrects her; their opponent is, in fact, as strong as any of Oberon's Children. "That's more than enough to us trouble," Goliath points out. Angela tries to think of some weakness Oberon has that they can use to their advantage, but that opportunity will only present itself should they live long enough to know what that weakness is.

Just outside his Palace, Oberon notes to Titania that "The game's afoot"; not only will Avalon once more be his, but Titania as well. Titania says nothing as he vanishes into the chase. Princess Katharine asks Titania if there's anything she can do to stop this challenge, but Titania merely mentions that she's already given their champions the best chance she could, asking if they have done the same. Before she and the Weird Sisters vanish, Titania tells the mortals to wish Goliath, Angela, and Gabriel luck, "for all our sakes". Now alone, Elisa pulls out her service weapon from her holster and notes how bothered Oberon appeared when she aimed it at him. That being the case, Elisa admits she was bluffing – the detective ejects her magazine, noting she's been out of bullets for weeks. She jokes then that even if he had bullets they would have to be silver. Princess Katharine disagrees. Silver is a weakness for vampires and weres, but for the Children of Oberon, "cold iron will do". Guardian confirms that Oberon's Children have always been vulnerable to iron and, now thinking about it, Oberon must be as well. Still holding her gun, Elisa realizes that the little iron it has from its steel alloy composition must have been the reason why Oberon was apprehensive about it. That makes sense to Guardian, who also notes how when the Magus fought the Weird Sisters, he won by binding them in iron chains! As Katharine starts to think where those chains may have run off to, Guardian notes that they do have a forge that can be used to shape them into a weapon. Elisa hands the empty gun to Guardian, noting that "every little bit helps". Still, she wonders, what weapon will they make?

Deep in the island's woods, Gabriel and Goliath are putting the finishing touches to a pitfall trap. While Angela keeps watch, Gabriel expresses optimism that the trap will surely give Oberon a surprise. Goliath is more pragmatic; at the least it should give them a better sense of his powers. Angela suddenly runs to them, heralding Oberon's arrival. Oberon arrives as a flying pillar of fire. The fire dissipates and a swirling Oberon appears before them. The trap lays between Oberon and the three gargoyles. Oberon's amused by their tactic, describing as rabbits that would dare face a fox. As he walks toward them, he suddenly plummets into the pitfall! Gabriel and Angela are quick to declare victory, but Goliath isn't assured just yet. Before he can explain his trepidation, Oberon flies out of the trap, irritated. He accuses the gargoyles of trying to make him look foolish, and for that alone, it will be on their heads. He summons the flora of the island:

"Branch and root, twig and vine,
strike with your master's wrath divine!"

The forest begins to move about the three gargoyles. Roots unearth themselves and ensnare Goliath's feet while vine-like branches have taken ahold of Gabriel and Angela! Angela's entire torso and wings are cocooned by the branches as Gabriel is lifted off the ground, practically spread-eagle. He manages to tear off his restraints, as does Angela. Goliath rips of his the branches restraining his wrists before tearing the roots off his feet. The three gargoyle converge near one another, ready for Oberon's next ploy. Not even bothering to rhyme, Oberon commands the boughs to tear themselves off from their trees, flying toward the gargoyles as large, wooden missiles. Angela and Gabriel duck the assault, but Angela stands up too early and a forked branch pins her to the ground. Goliath rips the branch off her and helps Angela to her feet. Gabriel makes a strategic withdrawal and retreats with Goliath and Angela on all-fours, with Goliath quickly taking the lead. As they run off, Oberon smiles. The foliage continues to creep after the gargoyles, even as they leap over fallen logs and gain ground. They finally make it to a cliff edge and take to the skies, away from the forest's reach. But not from Oberon, who levitates off the cliff before flying off, continuing the pursuit.

At Oberon's Palace, Guardian works a hand-bellows to stoke the fires flames. He declares to Princess Katharine, Ophelia, and Elisa that he's melted the last of the chains. He shares that a sword would make more sense as a weapon but Titania reminds him of the clue she gave them. They have no choice but to trust her. Guardian agrees: "No choice, and only one chance."

Goliath, Gabriel, and Angela are dodging blasts of energy from Oberon, and Gabriel realizes that Oberon is herding them to the mountains. A blast of energy nearly takes out Gabriel and Angela, and the rookery siblings take one another's hands to stabilize. The three gargoyles continue the island's volcano, gliding over the bubbling caldera. Oberon catches up with the three gargoyles, and Goliath tells his rookery children they must reach the other side. The Lord of Avalon continues his attack, and an energy blast hits Gabriel's left wing. Wings still outstretched, he slowly descends toward the molten lava, but Goliath dives to rescue him. With Gabriel in his arms, Goliath gains air as Angela beckons to hurry – Oberon's coming. He rhymes a command to the caldera and giant hands of molten lava rise from the volcano, cutting off the three gargoyles from their escape.

Act Three

With giant, molten hands of lava in front of them and energy blasts from Oberon behind them, Goliath, Angela, and Gabriel only have one chance. Goliath tells his rookery children to follow him as they intentionally speed up toward the molten hands, slipping past before either hand can annihilate them. The molten hands coagulate into one giant molten column, slowly Oberon's advance. As the three gargoyles continue their retreat, the walls of the caldera tighten around them transforming the lake of lava into a river. Finally past the molten column, Oberon continues to give chase following the gargoyles over the lava river which is flowing into a giant cave and tunnel. With Oberon attacking the gargoyles from behind with energy blasts, it looks like there is no end in sight when suddenly Goliath sees an opening. The three gargoyles glide out of the lava tunnel as it cascades into the river as a firefall! With his quarry still undefeated, the Lord of Avalon grows impatient. The three gargoyles dive through the steam clouds into the waters below and, while out of sight, are now tossed about by the water's currents. Goliath, Angela, and Gabriel all struggle to keep their heads above the water.

At Oberon's Palace, Guardian and Ophelia take the liquid iron from the forge and pour it on the floor below them. As the metal cools, Guardian informs the others they'll have their weapon soon. Ophelia then asks what gives them the right to use it on Oberon, and Princess Katharine reminds her rookery daughter that they are protecting their family and home. But Ophelia reminds the Princess that Oberon is, in fact, the proper Lord of Avalon, and not an outside aggressor, like the Archmage. For Oberon, Ophelia reasons, the Avalon Clan are the ones that are the invaders. Elisa sees Ophelia's point, but argues that Oberon gave up his claim when he abandoned the island a thousand years ago. As Guardian lifts up the red-hot iron with tongs, he accurately notes to Elisa that, unfortunately, Oberon does not see it that way. He cools the metal in a bucket of water, and lifting it once more to an anvil he begins striking it with a hammer as the others watch on. Guardian finally looks up from his work and says, "I gotta confess I don't know what I'm doing here." And then Elisa says, "Didn't you forge your armor?" Katharine then shares, "Actually that was two of "The Eggs": Michael and Raphael." Ophelia sighs and says, "I'll go get them." [1]

Goliath, Angela, and Gabriel pull themselves out of the waters, exhausted. Angela asks what their next step is, and Goliath tells his rookery children to go on – he's done running. Angela refuses to abandon her rookery father, saying, "Gargoyles stand together. That is our way." Once more a pillar of fire, Oberon lands before them, expressing how while the chase has been a merry one, it is time for it to come to an end. Seeing his quarry no longer running, he figures the gargoyles have simply acknowledged their fate. But Goliath doesn't concede, pointing out that there are no trees or plants to assist him – the Lord of Avalon will have to fight the gargoyles himself. Oberon is amused by Goliath's miscalculation; as Lord of Avalon, the very land knows its master just as the flora does. Gesturing to the ground at their feet, Oberon directs a swarm og boulders to attack the three gargoyles. Goliath, Angela, and Gabriel punch their way through as many as they can, but the debris starts to bury them waist-high. Goliath concedes Oberon's mastery of the island, but asks him, did Titania wanted the island or Oberon to win the match? Oberon's response is equally capable of goading his opponent, telling the gargoyle, "We had hoped to spare you the humiliation of direct combat, but if that is the only way to satisfy you – come on, then." He gestures the gargoyle to make the first move and Goliath, eyes glowing, growls and smashes the boulders away from him. He charges at Oberon, jumping and strikes the left shoulder, shattering Oberon's outer layer and exposing a diamond-hard interior! Oberon in diamond-form responds by backhanding Goliath to the ground. As Angela helps Goliath to his feet, she accuses Oberon of still not fighting fair. "Now you're just quibbling," the diamond Oberon smirks. This provokes growls from both Angela and Gabriel who charge at the diamond Oberon, striking his face and torso to no avail. When the rookery siblings exhaust themselves, the diamond Oberon takes his turn taking both gargoyles by the forearms and smashing the two into one another and throwing them to the ground. Thinking he's finally subdued his opponents, the diamond Oberon fails to see Goliath attack him from behind and grappling Oberon into a half nelson. Impressed with Goliath's resilience and cleverness, Oberon punches Goliath in the gut with a still-diamond elbow. As Goliath keels over, Oberon delivers the knock-out blow to Goliath's face. The hunt at an end, Oberon prepares to claim his prize, taking an unconscious Goliath, Angela, and Gabriel with him as he vanishes.

Returning to the gates of his Palace, Oberon drops the three gargoyles at his feet as Princess Katharine, Elisa, Bronx, Boudicca, Guardian, and Ophelia arrive to greet them. The weapon Guardian and Ophelia carry is shrouded. Oberon declares the game over and that the Avalon Clan's champions have lost. Princess Katharine refuses to concede, with at least one more play to attempt. Katharine unveils their weapon which is revealed to be an Iron Bell! Oberon already flinches at the bell's presence, but bends over in pain at the sound of its first stroke. With his sword, Guardian continues to strike the bell, each ring more concussive to the Lord of Avalon. Goliath, Angela, and Gabriel start to come to as the rings continue to paralyze Oberon. After seventeen strikes, Guardian anticipates that one more ring should finish Oberon off, but stops short. "I'll kill no one on his knees," Guardian tells the others. Goliath approaches the defeated Lord and quietly helps him to his feet.

Princess Katharine then approaches them both, declaring the game over and ready for Oberon to hear the clan's terms. If Oberon grants the clan asylum on the island, she promises to never use the bell against Oberon or his Children. As Katharine expresses their desire to live in peace, Titania suddenly appears with the Weird Sisters, waiting to hear what the Lord of Avalon is considering. Realizing that he could have been obliterated, Oberon finds the mortals' behavior strange. "Such an example of generosity is worth rewarding," Oberon concedes. He not only grants them asylum, but gives the Avalon Clan his blessing. Further, Goliath's clan shall be not only immune to Oberon's attacks, but the Honor Guard of Avalon. Bowing at the proclamation, Goliath thanks Oberon. Oberon then turns to Titania once more and asks that he receive his original might. Titania gives back his full power, and her blessings, calling him "husband" once more. As Oberon and Titania embrace, Goliath asks Elisa how they figured out the Iron Bell would work. Elisa explains that Titania gave them the clue back when she set the terms of the bout: that if the clan "sounded the knell" of his defeat "another ring" would be his reward. Titania walks to Goliath and he asks her if it is wise to trust Oberon. Titania assures Goliath they have nothing to fear from Oberon, his word is law. Princess Katharine asks if that means Oberon is always right, and Titania smiles as she responds, "Not while he's married." Goliath's pleased that things ended as well as they did, but one thing still confuses him – he asks Titania why she helped them. She responds that it was to return a favor, but this answer still confuses Goliath; they never met before!

As Oberon and Titania enter the Palace, the Weird Sisters stop to have a private conversation. Seline shakes her head as Luna waves off her concerns. The three of them vanish. With things now settled on Avalon, Goliath reminds Elisa and Angela they have a quest to return to.

As the Lord and Queen of Avalon enter the Great Hall, Oberon tells his wife it is time for the Gathering.

Continuity

Princess Katharine, Tom, and the rest of the Avalon Clan appear for the first time since "Avalon" Part Three, although the skiff has returned to Avalon between every foray into the outside world.

Oberon and Titania appear for the first time. Titania alludes to a previous service done her by Goliath, which is an indirect reference to the events of "Walkabout" and a foreshadowing of the revelation in "The Gathering" Part One that Titania and Anastasia Renard are the same person.

The Weird Sisters are still angry at the Avalon Clan following their defeat in "Avalon" Part Three. Guardian refers to them as screech owls, recalling the Magus's 995 fight with them in "Avalon" Part One.

Oberon initiates the Gathering, which is depicted in "The Gathering" Part One. Banshee had previously mentioned the Gathering in "The Hound of Ulster".

Tidbits

This episode is filled with Shakespearean references. Not only do Oberon, Titania, and the Weird Sisters all appear on-stage, but Puck is alluded to, and Ophelia's name is revealed for the first time (borrowed, of course, from Hamlet). The episode's title itself is a quote from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Act II, Scene i; appropriately enough, the words are spoken by Oberon to Titania (though for once, Greg Weisman was not fond of this Shakespearean touch, since the title was too often misread as "I'll Meet by Moonlight"). Shakespeare is not the only literary reference. In calling Titania his "Once and Future Queen", Oberon references the King Arthur novel by T.H. White's The Once and Future King (and, by extension, Sir Thomas Malory). Further, when Oberon prepares to head off after the gargoyles, he says, "The game's afoot," which comes from Henry V's "Once more unto the breach" speech in Henry V, Act III, Scene i (though this line is more commonly associated today with Sherlock Holmes, who quotes it at the beginning of The Adventure of the Abbey Grange). And to top it off, Goliath comments at the end, "All's well that ends well, then."

While it had been hinted before in the series that Oberon's Children were vulnerable to iron ("The Mirror", "City of Stone" Part One, "Avalon" Part Three, "Cloud Fathers"), this is the first time that it is explicitly made clear to the audience. This concept is not an invention of the series, however, but an actual folklore motif; in the legends of the British Isles, at least, the faerie-folk could be driven off by iron objects.

From the perspective of "faerie-lore," it was also extremely appropriate to make a bell the iron weapon to use against Oberon, since in traditional legend, the faerie-folk feared the sound of bells and would take flight from them. In the original tales about them, this apparently stemmed from the fact that the bells in question were usually church bells and represented the spread of Christianity, overcoming the pagan beliefs that the faeries were connected to; in Gargoyles, however, the bell's effect upon Oberon stems from the fact that it is made out of iron.

Princess Katharine believes that vampires and weres are similarly vulnerable to silver. This provides us with the only solid piece of information about vampires in the Gargoyles Universe, although vampires and Dracula were referred to elsewhere in the series ("Awakening: Part Three", "The Mirror", and "The Hound of Ulster"). However, it is not known as yet whether Katharine's opinion is correct, or if she was merely repeating a common superstition.

Alert viewers will note that King Arthur Pendragon was already asleep upon Avalon by the time that Oberon banished the Third Race from Avalon in 995, and might wonder why Oberon did not object to his presence the way that he did to the Avalon Clan's. According to Greg Weisman, Oberon agreed to admit Arthur to Avalon because he owed Merlin a favor. (It probably also helped that Arthur would be sleeping in an out-of-the-way place such as the Hollow Hill.)

Terrence Mann's name is misspelled as "Terence Mann" in the credits.

Toon Disney/Disney XD Edits

All mention of vampires and weres is cut out, specifically the small scene in with Elisa and Guardian where the Princess mentions, "Silver be for Vampires and Weres. For the Children, cold Iron will do."
