GargWiki talk:Feature
I'm not really sure who I am addressing this to... anyone, I guess, but is anyone good to change the featured article at any time? I think I know how and Goliath has been up a long time. I think it's a cool addition to the site, but maybe we could rotate it more. Do we have to have a different picture? Anything else I/we need to know before changing it? --Matt 12 November 2007
- Yes there is. Matt, you may know this already, but I'm addressing this to anybody who wants to make a Feature in the future.
- Currently, the text and picture in the Feature box is transcluded from GargWiki:Feature-01. If you want to create a new Feature box, create it at GargWiki:Feature-02, and we get to keep the Goliath version. Only one Feature will be up on the Main Page at any time. Eventually, if we get at least 12 different Features, then we can actually rotate it automatically on a monthly basis. If we want to, that is.
- But by all means, please make a new one. In fact, anyone who wants to write one can do so.
- I don't think you need to use a picture that is not in the article. In fact, it's probably preferable to use one that is in the target article. I just prefered that picture of Goliath over all the other pictures of Goliath we happened to have. -- Supermorff 12:49, 13 November 2007 (CST)
- I'm not sure if I did this correctly. Its strange, when I first come to the site, the Goliath feature is showing, but if I refresh or go elsewhere on the site and come back the Eyrie Building feature is showing. Someone want to let me know whats up? --Matt 17 November 2007
- I'm sure the site just needs a little time to update. It's working fine for me now. (Incidentally, do you know you can add a signature and a date just by typing four tildes, like this: ~~~~ ?) -- Supermorff 04:20, 18 November 2007 (CST)
- No, I didn't know that. Let me try. Matt 07:35, 18 November 2007 (CST)

More Featured Articles
Well, We now have our third feature article up and running. I thought the Phoenix Gate would be be a good one due to the upcoming issue "The Gate". I also want to mix it up a bit and have lots of different things as the Feature. We've now had a person, a place and a thing. I'm thinking in the next few weeks I'll make several more, and then we can start rotating them weekly or something. I think the next Featured Articel I'll make will be "The Mirror". After that I'm not sure, but I have a couple ideas: Brentwood, Greg Weisman, Fox, "Future Tense", Maggie the Cat, Dingo, the Praying Gargoyle, Thom Adcox, New Olympus and Gathering of the Gargoyles are also things I've thought of doing. Anyone else have any suggestions? From here on out I think I'll make one every Saturday for a while. -- Matt 11:44, 9 February 2008 (CST)
- If you can make 12 in total, then we can get them to rotate automatically every month. Just a suggestion. Make 31, and we can get them to rotate daily. -- Supermorff 06:33, 10 February 2008 (CST)
- Oh, and I forgot to say: nice work of Feature-03. It looks good. -- Supermorff 06:49, 10 February 2008 (CST)
- Thanks man. I'll keep rotating them out on my own until we hit GargWiki:Feature-31 and then we'll put it on a daily rotation. Give me some time on that, and of course, I'll need nominations for pages. Anyway, "The Mirror" is definitly next. -- Matt 09:31, 10 February 2008 (CST)
- As you can see, I'm hard at work making lots of new feature pages and hope to have 31 by mid-May. Supermorff, do you know how to implement the automatic cycling when I'm finished? Does anybody else have any nominations? I still have several ideas at least, but if there is something you think would make a good feature, let me know. -- Matt 18:00, 22 April 2008 (CDT)
- Hopefully, you should be able to use {{CURRENTMONTH}} for a number between 1 and 12, changed monthly, and {{CURRENTDAY}} for a number between 1 and 31, changed daily. What you want to do, then, is put the required function into the template instead of a number (so, in GargWiki:Feature, you'd use {{GargWiki:Feature-{{CURRENTMONTH}}}}, for example). Fingers crossed for it to work, because it's possible we don't have software recent enough to cope with it. -- Supermorff 12:23, 25 April 2008 (CDT)
Good News
Alright, Supermorff's little code works, so we now have a rotating daily featured article!!! I have the pages up and ready for the last five articles (26-31) and have the pics uploaded for them. I'll try to finish this project today. Sweet! -- Matt 11:07, 26 October 2008 (CDT)
Well. Sorta. We've long had problems with the Featured Articles on the Main Page updating... and it seems we still do. If I go to the Main Page and change nothing but save it, it reboots with the CURRENTDAY article, but apparently it won't reboot on its own. So, until we figure out a solution to this problem (which might require updating the Wiki's software) I will simply manually change the Featured Article every day. This isn't really a big deal since I'm on this site every day anyway, but I hope it is only a temporary solution. Of course, first I need to finish up the last few articles... -- Matt 18:48, 27 October 2008 (CDT)
This news is getting less good all the time. So, I've hit another couple weird issues. My friend who uses a Mac has no problem seeing the automatic changes. Apparently, it totally works for him. But I'm on my oridnary windows PC and it doesn't seem to want to update for me. So, I have no problem updating it manually. But I hit another problem. The 10 code wants to find Day 1, no Day 01... That won't work, but I think I can redirect Day 1 to Day 01 without too much of an issue. Of course, I've done that and the site is still giving me trouble. Hmmph. Well, we'll see what happens. -- Matt 10:32, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
- Hang on, I'm sure there's a code that'll give 01 instead of just 1. I'll check. -- Supermorff 14:36, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
- Try CURRENTDAY2. In fact, I'll try it. Here: 10. -- Supermorff 14:37, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
- Dang, that won't work. Apparently to use CURRENTDAY2 we need to be on MediaWiki version 1.6 or higher, and we're on 1.5.1. Still, this isn't a huge problem. Let's just move the features to Feature-1, Feature-2, etc. Wouldn't that be the easy thing? -- Supermorff 14:40, 1 November 2008 (CDT)

30th Anniversary update
Made some notes for Featured Pages we might consider retiring. I tried to still keep a balance on the type of page we feature. And still trying to balance old and new stuff. -- Matt (talk) 05:54, 1 June 2024 (PDT)
- Of the Dynamite Stories, perhaps New Rules or Cold Comfort since those had pretty big revelations. If it comes to a point that we can't decided between Antoinette and Wyvern, might I also suggest the Dragon page to replace the Hollow Hill page (and then Antoinette can snag a slot)? I do like one for the Goliath hearing page (once we have a solid name to make it), and if that gets one, I'd then lean toward "Cold Comfort". I don't want Thom gone either. --Pheon (talk) 06:41, 1 June 2024 (PDT)
- I second the nomination of "Cold Comfort" to replace "The Reckoning". I think Antoinette Dracon and Wyvern both deserve to be featured. Maybe Hyppolyta, too. I don't think we've, as of yet, had a new, major, significant location introduced. But that might change soon. --GregX (talk) 04:51, 5 June 2024 (PDT)
- I second a vote for Hyppolyta . . . updating the list above a bit, just to see which pages are falling into place (in case its not obvious, nothing is set in stone just yet, not even the order/which day, etc) --Pheon (talk) 23:47, 10 June 2024 (PDT)
- I second the nomination of "Cold Comfort" to replace "The Reckoning". I think Antoinette Dracon and Wyvern both deserve to be featured. Maybe Hyppolyta, too. Antoinette Dracon | Cold Comfort | Hyppolyta | Wyvern (Dragon) | Goliath's Hearing |
Forgive the boxing above. It offered me a chance to experiment a way to organize the images all in a row without the page getting too long.
Anyways, take a look at the proposed reordering of the featured articles. The idea here was to sort articles by either in-canon events (the dates when, say, the Wyvern Massacre or Goliath's Hearing took place) or when a featured episode or issue first aired or was released. That way, when the right month falls along, it would hit on the anniversary that one time of the year. There were two conflicts with dates: The first between "Louse" and "Cold Comfort", since both were released the 20th of their respective months (August and November). So I positioned "Louse" on the 5th, since January 5th (Twelfth Night) hits the date of the Bad Guys frame story that is featured throughout the arc. The second was between "City of Stone" Part One and "Bash", which both fell on the 18th of their respective months (September and July). For these two, since "Bash" takes place on Halloween (and that's not getting moved), I gave that issue its release date slot and put "City of Stone" Part One a timeline-themed slot (which was October 9th). A couple birthday easter eggs for Greg Weisman and Thom Adcox, but unfortunately Karine Charlebois (according to wikipedia) falls on the 18th, making that date triple booked. So I'm not completely sold on doing the birthdays if we can't get all three. After that, it was largely shifting the remaining articles to the empty slots. Didn't want to move more than needed. Thoughts? --Pheon (talk) 12:45, 16 June 2024 (PDT)

A lot of cool ideas. Hadn't thought of matching release dates and birthdays and timeline matches. I like it. The only quibble I have is the 1st. Starting each month with a massacre is a bummer. Ha. And I like that Goliath was our first feature and will remain on the 1st. That's just me though. I won't die on that hill. Great work! -- Matt (talk) 07:10, 17 June 2024 (PDT)
- I agree. Let's keep Goliath as our #1 --GregX (talk) 09:45, 17 June 2024 (PDT)
- Totally fine. I restored Goliath to the first slot and moved the CV-1000 Carrier Virus to the fourth, so that Wyvern Massacre can now fall on the day it aired: October 24, 1994. Didn't think to do that in the first place because it wasn't the episode itself that was featured. We could also toggle it so that it could reflect the world premiere day of September 29, 1994, if we want (but that would involve moving Demona, lol). --Pheon (talk) 11:00, 17 June 2024 (PDT)
- In addition to moving the articles, I updated the top list so we know where each featured article currently is positioned, but also so we keep track of which featured article were replaced by newer iterations. I think the scratched out list in this section can provide an a record of the original order (and, if we want to reposition them in the future, we can keep track in a similar manner). --Pheon (talk) 21:36, 20 June 2024 (PDT)
Holy cow that was a big job! Nice work, Phoenician! Kudos and thank you! -- Matt (talk) 07:25, 21 June 2024 (PDT)
I also want to second that kudo, nicely done! --GregX (talk) 08:35, 21 June 2024 (PDT)
