Demona in 1994

Demona, once known as Angel and also known as The Demon, is a female gargoyle. She was once the second-in-command of the Wyvern Clan and was Goliath's former mate, known to him at least as his Angel of the Night. She is the only gargoyle in the world that transforms into a human during the day, using the alias of Dominique Destine. While Demona has spent the centuries as her own worst enemy, she's become one of the Manhattan Clan's greatest enemies, and is possibly the most dangerous gargoyle in the world.

"If you are not my ally, then you are my enemy." - Demona, ("Awakening: Part Five")

History

Youth on Wyvern Hill

Angel in 971
Culen's captive in 971

The gargoyle who would become Demona was hatched in the year 938. [1]

By 971, she and Goliath were already falling in love with each other. However, the young gargoyle – at that time, known only as "Angel of the Night" or simply Angel, pet names which Goliath had bestowed upon her – had already begun to develop the weaknesses that would lead her down a dark path to come. In addition to Goliath, she had also developed close relationships with her rookery sisters, "Desdemona" and "Hyppolyta".

When her rookery father, the Rhydderch of the Wyvern Clan, made a bargain with Kenneth II and Prince Malcolm to defeat the usurping King Culen, Angel and her rookery sister, "Hyppolyta", ignored their leader's orders to stay off the battlefield which resulted in the death of his mate, "Verity" and the capture of Angel at Culen's hand. She was taken to Culen's stronghold in chains, and the king stole her tiara and mused about melting the gold down into a rattle for his infant son, Constantine, but was soon rescued by her the Rhydderch and Goliath, whereupon she promised to never disobey her rookery father's orders again as Mentor returned her tiara to her. She later attended the Wind Ceremony for "Verity" and other gargoyles who had fallen in the battle. A few nights later, as Prince Malcolm and the Rhydderch made a new bargain to build a castle on Wyvern Hill, the Archmage approached Angel, and promising to make sure that she never felt helpless again, offered her a place as his apprentice, she resignedly accepted hoping to attain the power to protect herself and her clan. He also taught her to read, and she in turn taught Goliath. ("The Reach", "The Draw", "The Oath", "The Promise") [2]

When the dragon, Wyvern, was awakened, the Archmage sensed an opportunity and sent Angel deep into its cave to recover a flute from the dragon's horde. After the battle ended, Angel delivered the flute to her new mentor. Shortly afterwards, at Goliath's side, she attended Shahrizad's telling of the Three Brothers. ("The Dream", "The Pledge")

The Archmage treated her harshly, dominating her by his threats, and she obeyed his commands out of fear. This reached its climax in 975, when the Archmage commanded her to steal the Phoenix Gate from Princess Elena.

Just after Angel stole the Gate, an older version of herself appeared with a duplicate Phoenix Gate, and whisked them both away to the year 994, accompanied by an older version of Goliath (both from the year 1995). There, the older Demona showed the younger Angel the aftermath of the Wyvern Massacre and Goliath's petrified form on the battlements, urging her to use the Phoenix Gate to avert this disaster and destroy the humans. Angel was horrified at her future self's coldness and callousness, and refused to become like her, but was also disturbed at what she had seen. The Goliath from the future did what he could to comfort her, urging her to not worry about this catastrophe but to remain true to her love.

Angel then returned herself and the two time travelers to 975, where she hid the Phoenix Gate from the Archmage, pretending that she had lost it. The Archmage, furious, cast her off as his apprentice then and there. Afterward, Angel and Goliath attended Prince Malcolm's wedding; she broke the Phoenix Gate in half there, giving one half of it to him as a token of her love, while keeping the other half for the same purpose. ("Vows") She also shared the Gate with Goliath as she didn't trust herself fully with it.[3] Angel lost her virginity to Goliath (and he to her) that night. [4]

Angel grew older and became one of the greatest warriors of the Clan, protecting the humans of the Castle but remaining troubled over the vision of the future she saw and becoming more and more angry by the humans' treatment of her and her kind. In 984, her former teacher the Archmage tried to take over Wyvern but was defeated. In a last attempt to kill Prince Malcolm, the Archmage shot him with a poisonous dart which only a spell from the Grimorum Arcanorum could cure. The Clan's leader, Mentor, was entrusted to bring back the book and he decided to take Goliath, by this point the Clan's second-in-command, and Angel with him. Together they tracked the Archmage to a cave and were able to retrieve the book and return it to Castle Wyvern, saving Prince Malcolm's life. Angel expressed many misgivings over Mentor's advancing age and ability to lead, and it was this and Mentor's own feelings on the matter that convinced Mentor to step down and allow Goliath to lead. ("Long Way To Morning") In truth, Angel wanted this for Goliath, and herself very much and Goliath soon made her his second-in-command. One member of the clan, Angel's rookery sister "Hyppolyta", disagreed with this turn of the events and felt Goliath was not the best choice for leader. Angel often argued with "Hyppolyta" about this.

Between 971 and 994, Angel got her ears pierced and started wearing earrings.

In 987, Angel and Goliath conceived a child and the next year Angel laid the egg in the rookery of the clan among many others.

Fallen Angel

Goliath and Angel in 994

By 994, Angel had finally had enough of the constant ingratitude of Princess Katharine, Prince Malcolm's heir, and her human subjects towards the clan, and said as much to Goliath after the princess treated them with contempt after the Captain invited them to the dining hall - Goliath attempted to soothe her anger by reminding her that by their nature, humans fear what they do not understand but human ways are also not gargoyle ways, and Angel appeared to calm, astounded by her love's patience. But in truth, Angel had not mellowed at all and decided, with the Captain of the Guard, to betray the humans to Hakon and his Vikings. The two plotters urged Goliath to take the entire clan and drive the Vikings away from the castle, intending to have Hakon capture Castle Wyvern in the gargoyles' absence at night. But Goliath, unwilling to leave the castle undefended, only took Mentor with him. The Captain, desperate to have the plan succeed, decided to have Hakon attack during the daytime instead. Angel was alarmed, knowing that in the daytime, the clan would be trapped in its stone sleep and defenseless even after the Captain vowed to keep them all safe. As dawn fast approached, she approached "Othello" and "Desdemona" for a moment but dared not warn them or the rest of the gargoyles, however, for fear that if she did so, she might have to reveal her part in the conspiracy, and so fled alone to hide upon the beach. As the sun rose, she turned to stone with a tear streaming down her cheek. ("Awakening: Part One", "City of Stone" Part One)

Angel, upon discovering the massacre in 994

She awakened that night, and returned to find her clan destroyed by the Vikings. Horrified and grief-stricken, she hid herself when Goliath returned to the castle, too afraid to face him. By the time that she re-emerged from hiding (having come up with what she believed would be an adequate cover story), Goliath and the other survivors had already been put to sleep (seemingly forever) by the Magus.

Looking up at her mate's petrified form, Angel cried out, "What have I – what have they done to you?" In that moment, her mood changed from grief to anger and hatred, burying the guilt that she felt over having contributed to the destruction of her clan underneath her rage at the humans, blaming them for her woes so that she could avoid facing her own responsibility for them.

She saw below Princess Katharine, the Magus, and Tom loading the rookery eggs on the cart and driving away with them, but made no effort to go after them as she was unable to "face" the eggs. Instead, she kissed the stone Goliath one last time, and glided away, sending herself into exile. ("City of Stone" Part One) [5]

Coming to a nearby farm, she raided the barn for food. The farmer's young son Gillecomgain, hearing the commotion from the animals, came to investigate, and Angel promptly slashed him across his face with her claws, scarring him, in her anger, and said "That'll teach you humans" (obviously it made no sense to think scarring one human peasant child, who was completely unaware of the source of her anger, would teach the entire human race any sort of lesson). Tragically, the only lesson any human learned that night was Gillecomgain, who came away from the encounter believing that all gargoyles are evil. Angel's action proved fatal for her, for Gillecomgain vowed revenge upon Angel - declaring her a demon - and her race, and grew up to become the first Hunter, an enemy both to Angel and to all gargoyles.

The Fate of Scotland

Angel discovers the massacre of the Sruighlea cell in 997

Angel continued to wander about Scotland, attacking any human who got in her way and stealing food to survive. By 997 other rogue gargoyles, the survivors of clans that had been destroyed by the humans, including "Second", "Sacrifice", "Brooksbro", "Schnozz", "Kermit", "Chomp", "Chaw", and "True" joined her, and by 997, she was the leader of a new clan, if a rather ragtag one, which turned to banditry. Learning from the lessons of the past, she arranged for the clan to sleep in different places, so that, if one "cell" was discovered and destroyed, the rest would live on.

Shortly after Brooklyn time traveled to 997, the entire Sruighlea Cell of Angel's clan had been massacred by King Constantine and Gillecomgain. Amid their remains, Angel discovered a wanted poster left behind for Mary and Finella and discovered that they possessed the Grimorum. When she told other members of her clan of the massacre, "True" suggested holding a Wind Ceremony; but Angel had no interest and advised them to focus on revenge instead. Brooklyn later approached her on behalf of Mary, Finella, and the Grim asking for help against Constantine. Seeing an opportunity to seize the Grimorum, Angel agreed, although she planned to destroy both armies and use the Grimorum to bring Scotland to its knees. During this time, the time traveling Brooklyn became known to Angel and her clan as the Gargoyle of the Sword. ("The Gate", "Tyrants")

While the two fought, Angel complimented Brooklyn's fighting skills; the younger gargoyle credited Goliath as a good teacher. Angel grew stern and advised him not to trust the humans as Goliath did, for she believed it was in the humans very nature to betray the gargoyles and slaughter them. In the midst of the battle, Brother Valmont used the Grimorum to rain down a storm of magical arrows. Angel seized the book to reverse his spell, if not the consequences. After Constantine was defeated, the Phoenix appeared to spirit Brooklyn away. Knowing he couldn't let Angel keep the Grimorum, Brooklyn offered to hold the book for her while she reached for her half of the Phoenix Gate, letting her believe she needed it to control the Phoenix. ("Phoenix")

Singing an Old Song

Angel in 1040

As the years passed, the grown-up Gillecomgain, as the Hunter, had become one of Angel's worst enemies, and a danger to all the surviving gargoyles left in Scotland as well. ("City of Stone" Part One)

In 1020, the Weird Sisters were assigned the task of watching over Angel and Macbeth by the Archmage, and set to work at once. They persuaded Angel to attack Gillecomgain at Castle Moray, when he went there on Prince Duncan's orders to assassinate Findlaech, and there she met Macbeth for the first time, and actually saved his life, although having to allow the Hunter to escape in order to so do. Although the Weird Sisters attempted to persuade Angel to ally herself with Clan Moray, she had no interest in doing so. ("City of Stone" Part One, "Avalon" Part Two)

Twelve years later, the Sisters again persuaded Angel to fight Gillecomgain at Castle Moray by Macbeth's side. This time, she slew the Hunter, and Macbeth saved her life, for which she grudgingly thanked him, hoping that their dealings were now at an end. ("City of Stone" Part Two)

Angel and Macbeth being magically linked in 1040

They were not. When Duncan finally decided to destroy Macbeth in 1040, he feared that Angel and her clan would aid Macbeth against him, and so attempted to destroy them as the Hunter. This backfired, however, for it helped force Macbeth and Angel into an alliance against Duncan as the common foe. All the same, Angel did not quite trust Macbeth, until the Weird Sisters appeared and made Angel this offer: if she would agree to the alliance with Macbeth, they would rejuvenate her. Angel, (by now the gargoyle equivalent of 52 and prematurely aged by her strenuous living), agreed to this, and the Sisters caused her and Macbeth to switch ages (making Macbeth 52 and Angel the gargoyle equivalent of 35, the age that Macbeth was then). In so doing, they also made them both unaging and immortal, only able to die if one slew the other, although they did not mention this at the time.

The beginning of a golden age and the naming of a demon.

With the aid of Angel and her clan, Macbeth overthrew Duncan in battle and became the new King of Scotland. Duncan's son, Canmore, blaming Angel for all of this, ran at her with a knife but she easily overpowered the boy, advising him not to throw his life away. Macbeth placed her clan under his protection, and declared her his primary advisor. Following his coronation in 1040, Macbeth gave Demona her name, because he thought she fought like a demon... Demona liked the name and eagerly accepted it and kept it. And, despite all of her suspicions and misgivings, welcomed Macbeth's declaration of a golden age between humans and gargoyles. ("City of Stone" Part Three)

For the next seventeen years, Demona could know peace and safety at last. Other gargoyles came to know about this new golden age between humans and gargoyles and flocked under her leadership and her clan grew in size. During this time, Demona grew to like Luach "well enough" and (while they got along in public) she largely avoided Gruoch as the two maintained a "healthy suspicion" of one another. [6][7] Furthermore, Demona eventually shared with Macbeth the events of the Wyvern Massacre and her version of the role she played. [8] This peaceful and happy respite came to a tragic end in 1057, when a grown-up Canmore invaded Scotland with the help of the English, seeking to regain his father's throne and achieve his revenge. Demona and her clan valiantly fought against the English invaders, but in a private council, Bodhe urged Macbeth to cast off his alliance with the gargoyles, since (so Bodhe thought) the English were only invading Scotland because of their hatred for their kind and would go home if Macbeth abandoned Demona's clan.

The destruction of a golden age.

Unfortunately, Macbeth did not immediately reject this advice, wishing to show his son Luach that "a wise king considers all his options, and then decides," and equally unfortunately, Demona, though not invited to the council, was secretly eavesdropping on it. Convinced that Macbeth would indeed betray her and her clan to the English, she decided to betray them first, and so abandoned Castle Moray on the eve of the final battle. Deprived of the gargoyles' aid, Macbeth was defeated by Canmore; however, Canmore had Demona's clan destroyed as well, probably because as an army they were all together and thus easily smashed. Demona assisted Canmore in directly confronting Macbeth and accusing him of betrayal. Furious with his one time friend and ally, Macbeth was too distracted to spot Canmore as the younger man stabbed him in the back causing Demona to collapse as well. Believing that he destroyed both of his enemies, he retreated feeling victorious. However, the Weird Sisters appeared and revealed that Canmore had misunderstood the magical link - when one lives, both live and thus Demona and Macbeth would live forever linked until one destroyed the other at which point both would finally perish. An enraged Gruoch confronted Demona over her betrayal, but despite her protests, Demona knew that the queen was right and disappeared into the night. Demona was alone once again, the last gargoyle alive in Scotland (or so she thought), and eventually she fled for other parts of the world. ("City of Stone" Part Four)

Leaving Scotland

Demona and Angelika in 1093

By 1093, Demona had started wearing armor and left Scotland, crossing Hadrian's Wall into Northumbria where she came upon a new clan of gargoyles, meeting their leader and second-in-command, and quickly finding she had no respect for them... believing them to be sheep. Demona, however, had caught the attention of a young rookling, who was curious as to why she carried a sword. By November 13th, Demona had engaged in an argument with the clan leader and second, urging them to scatter the clan before sunrise so they wouldn't all be at risk of an attack from the humans - but the two gargoyles refused, having never had trouble with the local humans before; Demona hid in a nearby forest before sunrise. That night, she awoke to find that the Northumbria Clan had been shattered during the day and the young rookling was the only survivor. Following the sound of the child's crying, Demona found the rookling in the rookery, sobbing over the shattered gargoyle eggs. The rookling turned on Demona, blaming her for still being alive - she had overheard Demona's warnings and was the only one to heed them, wishing she had died with her clan. At that, Demona lost sympathy and cast the rookling to the ground, telling the child she was wise and that survival was all that mattered. Demona then led the rookling off to seek vengeance. She soon came upon her old enemy, Canmore - who was surprised to see that she still lived before taunting Demona with the mask of the Hunter. But Demona was uninterested in "epic final battle" and simply ran Canmore through with her sword - killing him. The rookling pulled Demona away before she could continue to end Canmore's line, but the Hunter's mask would be taken up by Canmore's son: Donald Canmore. Despite this, Demona found herself growing fond of the rookling, assuring her that she could not be killed nor did she age. When the rookling suggested holding a Wind Ceremony, Demona was uninterested - both in the Wind Ceremony and caring for the rookling before she decided to leave the British Isles entirely, taking off over the sea. But the rookling followed, to Demona's delight, and inspired by the gargoyle, the rookling took the name Angelika. ("Fools Rush In...")

Alone

Demona in Florence, 1495.

The period of her life between 1094 and 1994 is far more sketchily-recorded than that between 994 and 1057. She was possibly involved in many watershed events in European and American history. [9]

Demona roamed most of the world, pursued both by Macbeth (who first hunted her to seek revenge and later simply to end his long life) and by now a new line of Hunters descended from Donald Canmore, who had learned of her survival and chosen to hunt her down. Growing increasingly bitter towards humans, she finally decided that she must destroy them all, partly as the only means of ensuring survival for herself and what little remained of her race, partly as a means of gaining her revenge. Demona, likely to have already been living in France in the early 15th century, took her first step towards this goal when she stole the Medici Tablet in Florence in the year 1495, upon which was engraved the Fulfillment Spell. She was confronted by the Hunter, Stuart Canmore, but managed to evade him. Enraged, the Hunter screamed into the night about how his family had hunted her for five-hundred years and would keep hunting her until the last gargoyle died, but Demona merely smirked behind his back and took off. ("Hunter's Moon" Part Two) [10]

Demona has also seen William Shakespeare's Macbeth, and felt that it represented poetic justice. [11] [12]

Demona in Paris, 1980.

In 1920, Demona journeyed to Paris to locate the Praying Gargoyle and used it to animate every gargoyle statue in Paris for the express purpose of murdering every human in the city. She was foiled by Fiona Canmore and Team Atlantis, and at the end, her life was saved by Joshua Sweet (or so it would have appeared to anyone unaware that only Macbeth can kill her). Though the Praying Gargoyle was destroyed during her defeat, she was able to retrieve the Atlantean crystal inside it and moved it to holy ground where in sixty years it would regenerate. ("The Last")

What Demona did during World War II has yet to be revealed, but the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki probably put a scare into her. [13]

In 1980, she returned to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and regained possession of the relic easily and swiftly killing the Hunter Charles Canmore in the process. Canmore's three children: Jason, Robyn, and Jon followed her into the Catacombs of Paris where she almost killed Robyn before being driven off by Jason, firing at her with a gun. The Weird Sisters watched over her and Macbeth all this time, and twice intervened in her life, under as yet unchronicled circumstances. ("Avalon" Part Two, "Hunter's Moon" Part Three, "Estranged") [14]

Her Once and Future Clan

Greeting Goliath for the first time in a thousand years.

At some point between 1980 and 1994, Demona met David Xanatos thanks to some maneuvering behind the scenes by Brooklyn, Finella, and Mary, with Owen/Puck handling the actual introductions, and the two of them formed an alliance for the purpose of reviving Goliath and his clan from their stone sleep, each for personal reasons. [15] Partnering with Xanatos, Demona once again had access to the Grimorum Arcanorum, in which she likely read the Magus's account written in the back pages. [16] Her long term plan being to take the castle from Xanatos and lead the clan into a new age of armed conflict against the human race. ("Idyll or Nightmare")

Reunited and still scheming.

After Xanatos moved Castle Wyvern to the top of the Eyrie Building, thus breaking the Magus' spell, Demona conspired with Xanatos to manipulate Goliath before she revealed herself to the awakened clan on their third night in this new century, pretending that she had been under the Magus' spell. Manipulating Goliath's happiness and gratitude towards Xanatos for reuniting them, she helped dupe Goliath into raiding Cyberbiotics on Xanatos's behalf. But in the course of their mission, she quickly revealed to Goliath the full depths of her bitterness; first by referring to the lives of the human crew of Air Fortress as worthless. When they were confronted by two security guards, Goliath didn't quite notice that Demona appeared more knowledgeable of modern human technology than she had initially let on. Goliath had to talk her out of dropping the two human security guards to their deaths and she coldly told him that the centuries had made him weak. But when they broke into the bridge and she stole the disk, she couldn't stop there and she ended up setting the bridge on fire, causing the Air Fortress to fall out of the sky in order to kill as many humans as possible. Goliath wanted to stay and help, but Demona pulled him out of the vessel as it crashed into the East River. Not all of the humans on board survived the crash. [17]

She's not as he remembered her.

After returning to the castle and delivering the data disk to Xanatos, Goliath felt the need to get some space from her, as he was disturbed by her behavior on board the Air Fortress, and remembered his appointment with Elisa Maza, which enraged Demona. She attempted to pressure him into staying while reminding him of what the humans did to their clan, but Goliath (without even realizing it) kept pointing out her own hypocrisies; when Goliath asked if Xanatos proved that there were some humans they could trust, she couldn't answer because she knew that Xanatos was only using them, and when Goliath pointed out that the ones responsible for the massacre had been dead for a thousand years, knowing of her own culpability and unable to account for it, she vowed that the descendants of those humans would pay and she would have blood for blood. It reached a crescendo when he told Demona that the centuries had made her hard and unforgiving before departing - he didn't realize it yet, but as far as Demona was concerned, she and Goliath were done right there and then.

Demona reveals her true colors to Goliath in 1994.

Demona then worked with Xanatos to unleash the Steel Clan on the gargoyles, hoping to beat them into submission and that with Goliath out of the way, she could then step in and take charge. After the robots were defeated, she made one final attempt to bring her mate to her side while pointing a bazooka at him. She revealed that a thousand years ago, she and the Captain made a bargain for the gargoyles to leave the castle so the Vikings could sack it, and with the humans gone, the castle would be theirs. She accused Goliath of ruining her plan by making the gargoyles remain at the castle, and though the Captain vowed to protect them when the Vikings attacked, Demona stayed alive because she didn't trust him or anybody else. Goliath, shocked, asked her why she did it and the question only enraged her and she reminded him of all the mistreatment they suffered at the humans' hands and she had vowed vengeance on all of humanity. When a horrified Goliath refused to join her in her crusade against humanity, and purposely pointed out her culpability in everything that had happened, she wouldn't hear it and made on final, emotional plea for Goliath to join her. But when he wouldn't do so, she declared him her enemy, revealed the name that had been given to her so long ago and attempted to murder him, but Elisa Maza saved Goliath's life causing her bazooka to fire at a tower and collapse on the parapets. With both women falling from the skyscraper, Goliath dove to save Elisa first and then meant to dive a second time and rescue Demona but by then, she had disappeared... no doubt seeing Goliath's choice as another betrayal and in the process, Elisa, made a very bitter enemy of Demona. ("Awakening: Part Two", "Awakening: Part Three", "Awakening: Part Four", "Awakening: Part Five")

From that point on, Demona attempted to either convert the gargoyles to her viewpoint, or, if she could not accomplish that, to destroy them.

Taking Control

Demona and Brooklyn in 1994

Demona began her offensive by approaching Brooklyn, she spent some time watching the Trio restore an old motorcycle and followed Brooklyn when he took it on a joyride, and then saved his life when he was violently assaulted and nearly killed by a gang of bikers that he attempted to befriend. Reminding him that she just saved his life, Demona told the young gargoyle that she was not under the sleep spell like they were and spoke to him of the depths and darkness of humanity, even taking him on a tour of the city to show her the humanity that she wanted him to see. Her plan worked and Brooklyn agreed to help her steal the Grimorum Arcanorum by telling him there was a "spell of truth" in its pages that would "open Goliath's eyes". But Demona had tricked the young gargoyle and used a spell to turn Goliath into a mindless zombie under her control. Horrified by her actions and his participation in them, Brooklyn turned on Demona... who then attempted to place the same spell on him and likely the entire clan had it come to that. But Brooklyn managed to gain control of the spell and Goliath, forcing Demona to flee. But while Demona's plan was foiled, she managed to successfully steal several pages from the book... and make an enemy out of Brooklyn in the process. Elisa later used the spell to cancel itself out and free Goliath. ("Temptation")

Weeks later, Demona attacked Elisa Maza in her apartment, attempting to poison the detective to lure Goliath into a trap. While the poisoning was foiled, Goliath and Hudson met Demona at the Old York Opera House where she successfully shot Goliath in an attempt to assassinate her former mate. Hudson was forced to keep Goliath alive as Demona pursued them to a cemetery - attempting to bring her old Mentor to her side. As the battle commenced, Demona constantly insulting her rookery father and mocked his age - having lost her temper and intending to bludgeon him to death with her particle beam cannon. Hudson exploited her lack of patience which bought enough time for the sun to rise and Goliath to be healed. Demona fled after sunset - gloating that by now Elisa must be dead. ("Long Way to Morning")

She soon joined forces with Xanatos again to create the cybernetic gargoyle Coldstone, combining his science with her sorcery, they succeeded in resurrecting the soul of "Othello" (and unknown to her at the time, the soul of "Desdemona" and "Iago"). To circumvent Coldstone's questions, Demona introduced Xanatos as her servant (which he didn't particularly care for). Blaming Goliath for the massacre, Demona and Xanatos sent Coldstone into Times Square to go on a rampage. Goliath soon arrived, as did Xanatos and Demona. Cracks began to show in this alliance because while Demona was eager for a final showdown which result in the deaths of her enemies, Xanatos wanted the gargoyles alive. The battle was taken to the George Washington Bridge by both Goliath and Xanatos (against Demona's wishes, as she was more than ready to end things in Times Square). Coldstone decided that he didn't wish to kill his rookery brother and wondered if there was more for them than just survival even if Demona insisted that it was enough. Goliath attempted to remind all of them that gargoyles protect - it is their very nature, their very purpose. But Demona pulled the trigger and fired at Goliath - a blast that Coldstone took falling into the Hudson River. Before she could the kill the Trio, Xanatos disarmed her and the two villains fled after Elisa showed up with Bronx and Hudson, Xanatos carrying Demona away from the battle against her will. ("Reawakening")

Demona discovers her human form in 1995

Several months later, Demona encountered Goliath and Elisa again at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when she attempted to steal Titania's Mirror. She led Goliath and Elisa on a chase through the museum and into Central Park, attempting to murder Elisa before escaping. While she did this, thieves that she hired broke into the museum and stole the mirror, delivering it to her townhouse in Gramercy Park. She used a magic spell to summon Puck for the purpose of acquiring a servant as she knew that Puck "served the human". When Puck asked Demona what she wanted, aside from no longer turning to stone, she wasn't quite sure until the thought popped into her head of getting rid of all the humans. Puck was unable to do this, but despite being her captive he was still a trickster and turned all of her demands to his advantage such as turning Elisa into a gargoyle when she commanded him to rid her of "that human" and then turning all of the humans in the city into gargoyles after Demona demanded that Puck do the same thing to the rest of the humans in the city - and was livid when she learned what Puck had actually done. When she ordered Puck to "turn the gargoyles to humans", Puck transformed Goliath and his clan into humans - while she was furious at first, she saw the advantage and attempted to finally kill a vulnerable Goliath in a battle at Rockefeller Center. Her plan was foiled, mostly thanks to the intervention of Elisa in a gargoyle form, but Puck was more than happy to give her a gift, fulfilling her first demand to no longer turn to stone by casting a spell that would transform her into a human during the day - painfully. At first she basked in the sunlight, but cried out in shock when she saw her reflection in Titania's mirror - the last time any reflection would appear in Titania's Mirror for she immediately shattered it at the very sight of herself. ("The Mirror")

Demona terrifies Angel in 994.

She later attended Xanatos's wedding to Fox as the bride's maid of honor and, by playing into Goliath's sentimental hopes to rekindle things with her, tricked him into yielding up to her his half of the Phoenix Gate, so that she could use it to go back in time to the year 975 - which she did, bringing Goliath, Fox, Xanatos, and Petros Xanatos with her (Xanatos was mostly in on her plot, because he had his own destiny to fulfill through this time loop). She quickly fled, with Goliath in pursuit before using the Gate to send herself a few hours forward in time to meet with her younger self, just as she had already done from her younger self's perspective. She took the Angel of 975 forward to 994, and Goliath continued his pursuit, but Demona was ready for him (for she had already experienced all this) and knocked him out when they arrived at the castle, post-massacre. Demona showed Angel the horrors of the Wyvern Massacre, and Goliath frozen in stone at night, and tried to persuade her younger self to keep the Phoenix Gate rather than share it, and use it to destroy the humans, rule the gargoyles, and rule the world. But, as Demona had done as a youth, so to Angel did, vowing to never be like Demona and rejected her plan - only for Demona to attempt to beat the lesson into her younger self, but a recovered Goliath and Angel defeated her. While her plan was foiled, Demona could not resist twisting the knife by throwing the words Goliath gave to the young Angel back in his face as both came to the realization that history is immutable after they returned to 1995. Goliath returned to the Clock Tower, his final attempt to rekindle things with her having failed and began to finally move on from their old relationship. ("Vows")

Her first round of schemes after Goliath and his clan's awakening climaxed when she manipulated Xanatos into putting her on television (jamming every broadcast and cable network in Manhattan). She lied to Xanatos by promising him that they would be able to steal one minute of life from every human who saw and heard the spell she had planned to cast, and they'd share the stolen time. After Xanatos had left, Owen recorded the spell and quickly realized that Demona wasn't casting the spell she had promised, but before he could stop her, Demona stunned the majordomo and tied him to a chair, bound with an iron cable so she could make sure that the "tricky one stay put". In actuality, she placed a curse over the humans in New York, causing them to turn to stone during the night so that she could smash them at her leisure. The following night, she murdered hundreds of humans, some with a particle beam but most with a mace - even leaving one woman horribly maimed come sunrise. Leaving a trail (that passed in front of a toy store!) that Goliath and Brooklyn followed to PackMedia Studios. But before they arrived, Demona nearly killed Xanatos, but was stopped by the arrival of Macbeth, who had donned the mask of the Hunter. Upon realizing who the Hunter was and that her life was at risk, she fled - the immortal Scottish King pursuing her. Goliath and Xanatos then agreed to join forces to break Demona's spell. ("City of Stone" Part One, "City of Stone" Part Two)

Demona Weird Sisters City of Stone Part Four.png

The following evening, Xanatos and the gargoyles moved forward with Xanatos's plan to "set the sky ablaze" by passing a hypergolic gas through the skies of the city... with a timed countdown before the gas packs would ignite. But Demona appeared at the castle, intent on smashing the stone Elisa, and while the detective was saved by Bronx, Demona changed the access code on Xanatos's computer and altered the timer so that the packs would ignite too soon to break her spell and kill Xanatos and the clan in the process. She was again confronted by Macbeth, and she mocked him for being unable to do anything to stop her without killing himself in the process... but her confidence evaporated when she realized that he was there to do exactly that: kill her and in the process, end his nine-hundred year existence. Realizing the risk, Xanatos and Goliath returned and attempted to talk Macbeth down and acquire the new access code from Demona. But it was only the arrival of the Weird Sisters who put Demona into a trance by slowly breaking her down and making her realize and acknowledge that she was culpable in all of the tragedies that had befallen her... and tearfully, Demona provided the access code: "ALONE". Afterwards Demona came out of the trance, and buried that guilt, renewing her hatred for humanity and vow for vengeance before being put to sleep by the Weird Sisters and taken away. Goliath bitterly acknowledging that Demona had learned nothing. ("City of Stone" Part Three, "City of Stone" Part Four)

Cannon Fodder

Demona in her human form battles Elisa Maza in 1995

The Weird Sisters placed Demona and Macbeth under their control and immediately used them to first steal the Grimorum Arcanorum, Eye of Odin, and Phoenix Gate from the Clock Tower. In her human form, Demona posed as a police officer who was bringing in an arrested perp (Macbeth), but they caught the eye of Elisa thought the officer looked familiar and who wanted to "give the rookie some advice". Elisa grew suspicious and followed them into the Clock Tower, where the two knocked her out. In order to trick the gargoyles, they also stole Coldstone. Demona was annoyed that Macbeth stopped her from killing an unconscious Elisa and smashing the clan while they slept. Macbeth did not want to wait until sunset to reactivate Coldstone, accusing Demona of still thinking like a gargoyle - but she insisted that she was a gargoyle, and the human form was a usefol tool. After the sun set, they reactivated Coldstone, the soul of "Iago" assuming control, and then succeeded in trapping the clan at Macbeth's Mansion. Demona returned to the Clock Tower and confronted Elisa Maza, openly revealing her new human form and setting a trap designed to either kill Elisa or to prove to Goliath once and for all that Elisa, like all humans, is worth nothing. Elisa willfully walked into the trap resulting in a one-on-one battle, but Elisa easily trounced Demona (who lacked experience fighting as a human). "Othello" soon took control of Coldstone and saved Elisa's life causing Demona and Macbeth to flee. Back at the mansion, Demona and Macbeth began to come out of the Weird Sisters' trance, but the Sisters arrived to reassert control and take them and the Three Keys to Power to Avalon. ("High Noon")

Macbeth, the Archmage, and Demona in 1995.

Arriving on Avalon and presenting the Three Keys to the Archmage, Demona and Macbeth were next used to attack the Avalon Clan. They briefly came out of the Archmage's control for a moment when Goliath told her that the gargoyles on Avalon were innocent and their clan's children, but control was reasserted and Demona was sent into Oberon's Palace to wipe out her rookery children. However, even under the Archmage's control, her hatred of Elisa Maza overrode everything - and because of that, she was ultimately defeated by Princess Katharine. After the defeat of the Archmage's forces, the Sisters lifted their hold over Demona and Macbeth, and caused them to forget everything that they had undergone while the Sisters had enchanted them, after which the Goliath sent them away into the outside world aboard a Skiff. ("Avalon" Part Two, "Avalon" Part Three)

New Love, New Ventures, and... A New Daughter

Demona successfully tricking Macbeth in 1996

Avalon brought Demona and Macbeth to Paris, where Demona awoke first, saw Macbeth, and fled the Skiff. She soon met and fell in love with Thailog. The two gargoyles began to combine their wealth for even bigger plans, and plotted to add to their fortune by having Demona marry Macbeth in her human form under the name Dominique Destine and they soon met after an "accidental encounter". (she presented herself as a good Catholic French girl), then afterward locking him up, faking his death, and inheriting his wealth as his "widow". [18] Dominique's seduction of Macbeth was successful as they were engaged to be married within two weeks. Fortunately, the Avalon World Tour also brought Goliath, Elisa, Angela, and Bronx to Paris on the eve of the wedding. The travelers first began to learn of the scheme when Elisa spotted Demona and Macbeth strolling down the Champs-Élysées, and followed them to Macbeth's Château and then Demona to Notre Dame. Goliath later, nervous about Angela taking too much of an interest in Demona, ordered her to stay with the Skiff and "protect Elisa"; and during the battle, Goliath discovered Demona's new relationship with Thailog - much to his disgust. After taunting Goliath about her newfound love, she was amused when Goliath attempted to warn Thailog that Demona and Macbeth were plotting behind his back. After her former mate left, Demona pulled Thailog aside and informed him of how the treasures she had hoarded for a millennia and the millions he had stolen from Xanatos had now been incorporated into a new conglomerate which she had named Nightstone Unlimited. Now began the next phase of the plan - marry Macbeth, which Dominique did the following day just before sunset. As Macbeth pulled her aside, preparing to tell Dominique his full life story, she shocked her soul mate by transforming into a gargoyle and capturing him - with her intent to lock him away and keep him hidden until the end of the time and combine his fortune with hers and Thailog's. But Thailog had other ideas and helped Macbeth escape in the hopes that an enraged and suicidal Macbeth would kill Demona (ending his own life as well) and, as Demona's business partner, he would inherit all of it. But after a very violent battle, Elisa shot and temporarily killed Demona. It was upon regaining consciousness that Demona first saw her biological daughter Angela (having no memory of their encounter on Avalon). But before anything could be sorted out, Thailog arrived and took Demona into his arms and away - she being none the wiser of his betrayal. ("Avalon" Part Three, "Sanctuary")

Angela, Demona, and Thailog in 1996

Returning to New York with Thailog they hired Dr. Sevarius away from Xanatos, and through him Demona learned that Angela was her biological daughter. She decided to recruit Angela to her cause, as well as setting up a fresh clan for herself, by letting herself be captured by the Manhattan Clan. She attacked the Goldencup Bakery Building and stole an Exo-Frame where she was confronted by Goliath, Brooklyn, Angela, defeated and imprisoned in the Labyrinth. While there, Angela took the first watch and the two of them had their first of many conversations and, despite herself, Demona found herself becoming genuinely fond of the young female and began to view her as a real daughter and not just as an opportunity. Despite this, she arranged for the cloning of Hudson and the Trio (by releasing Micro-Electric Mosquitos hidden in a specialized belt buckle), and did all that she could to subvert Angela over to her side, without success. Once the clones were ready and their traps were set, Thailog arrived and rescued Demona from captivity, she also released her cellmate, Fang, believing he could be of use - then the three of them lured Goliath and Talon to Coney Island. Demona, Thailog, and the Clones then captured the clan (Demona and Thailog personally capturing Angela and Goliath). With the Manhattan Clan finally at her mercy, Demona revealed that she named the clones Brentwood, Hollywood, Malibu, and Burbank (mostly as a mockery of how stupid she thought the Manhattan Clan's chosen names were). With all of that out of the way, Thailog was prepared to execute the Manhattan Clan one-by-one with his gun... starting with Angela. Demona protested this, confronting Thailog for Angela's life, but Thailog chose to reveal Demona's manipulations to all assembled which enraged the young gargoyle who angrily told Demona that she hated her... these words hurt Demona probably more than she ever imagined they could. But when Thailog was about to pull the trigger on Angela, Demona physically stopped him. Feeling that Demona's usefulness had come to an end, Thailog revealed that he had Sevarius grow a fifth clone that he intended to replace Demona with - Delilah - created by mixing Demona's DNA with a little of Elisa Maza's. Demona who had also realized that she had come to love her daughter, furiously turned on Thailog, freeing the gargoyles and telling Goliath to "save our daughter!" The two villains confronted each other on top of a burning rollercoaster which collapsed. In the midst of the chaos, both of them disappeared leaving the Manhattan Clan unsure of their fate, and Angela regretting her choice of words.("The Reckoning")

500 Years Of Preparation

Treating her employees with... compassion.

Not long afterward, Demona used her resources at Nightstone Unlimited to complete the scheme that the thefts of the Medici Tablet and Praying Gargoyle had begun, Operation Clean Slate, by employing Sevarius to create the CV-1000 Carrier Virus. She hired thieves to steal a canister of D/I-7 detergent from Xanatos Enterprises, which was foiled by Elisa Maza and her new partner, "Jason Conover". A thief that managed to escape informed "Dominique Destine" of their failure while she was interviewing "Robyn Correy" as a personal assistant. After hiring and then dismissing "Miss Correy" for the evening, Dominique lured the terrified thief into the skyscraper's command center where she almost assaulted him. But as the sun set, she chose to spare the thief, deciding to steal the D/I-7 personally, and dismissed him just before she transformed. She went to Xanatos's Chemical Plant on the upper westside herself and succeeded in stealing her prize after a violent encounter with the Trio and Bronx. ("Hunter's Moon" Part One)

The following day, while giving "Robyn Correy" a tour of the facilities, Dominique introduced her new assistant to Dr. Sevarius, who informed her that the CV-1000 was ready... Dominique told Robyn that with this they could create a cure as contagious as any disease (but Robyn recognized that it could be used to cause a disease) and watched as Dominique set the vial down inside a massive vault next to the D/I-7, the Praying Gargoyle, and the Medici Tablet. That night, Demona attacked the Hunters' Airship intent on taking her long time enemies out, but was shocked to encounter Goliath, Brooklyn, and Lexington. The distraction of all four of them allowed the Hunters to capture them. While imprisoned Demona revealed her history with them to the clan, and when Goliath told her of the Hunters' near murder of Angela the previous night, Demona promised to help them escape, which they did and together, she and Goliath seemingly killed two of the Hunters (much to Brooklyn and Lexington's horror). Goliath's new vengeful attitude pleased Demona who promised him it would all be over in two more nights. Brooklyn, however, was incredulous with his leader for just letting Demona go. ("Hunter's Moon" Part Two)

"Now spread your evil - if you dare..."

With her plans so close to fruition, Demona emptied her vault, save for a disk outlining her scheme and the statistical specs involved with it, and began laying low making the final preparations. Robyn Canmore broke into the safe, finding only the disk and seizing it, before accepting a video call from Dominique telling her new assistant that she'd be out for a few days, encouraging Robyn to take a few days off to enjoy life which was "so fleeting"... but Robyn was able to decrypt the disk the following day and was horrified at the scope of the demon's plans. On the night of the Hunter's Moon, Demona arrived at Saint Damien's Cathedral and Jon Canmore spotted her, crashing the Hunters' Airship into the condemned cathedral with full intent to stop her, but they were foiled by the arrival of the Manhattan Clan. Demona decided to let the clan and the Hunters distract each other while she made her way to an altar to use the Fulfillment Spell engraved on the Medici Tablet to merge the carrier virus with the D/I-7 that she had stolen from Xanatos, creating a powerful plague designed to destroy all intelligent life on the planet, the Praying Gargoyle's magic was invoked to protect gargoyles from the plague. Brooklyn, who bypassed the battle with the Hunters, attempted to stop her but was shot in the arm... his screams drawing the rest of the gargoyles. Fortunately, when Demona basked in her premature victory and revealed her plan, Goliath intervened at the last moment leaping towards her. Thinking he was going for her, Demona ducked but Goliath grabbed the statuette and despite having her gun trained on him, he crushed the Praying Gargoyle in his hands. Goliath dared Demona to follow through and just kill all of them, including Angela. Demona shrieked in rage and in a moment that could have been considered her covering her escape, or an act of complete nihilism, she tossed the vial containing her plague into the air challenging Goliath to catch it. Goliath dove to the floor and caught it in his hands before it could shatter, but she managed to escape. The sight of Demona's exit caused the crowd gathered outside to go crazy, and a reluctant Matt Bluestone to order the helicopters to close in - but the Manhattan Clan were soon rescued by Xanatos. ("Hunter's Moon" Part Three)

On Halloween, 1996, Demona returned to St. Damien's Cathedral to retrieve the Atlantean crystal from the shattered remains of the Praying Gargoyle. ("Invitation Only")

Mater Familias and Magistra

Antoinette Dracon, Demona, and Coldstone conspiring in 1997

After her new personal assistant, Robyn Correy, was revealed to be a Hunter and taken into custody, Demona decided to lie low as she is paranoid that Robyn may have blown her cover to the authorities. Demona has yet to return to Nightstone Unlimited, but she still sees the advantages of it. ("Miracle Child") [19]

At some point, she made the acquaintance of Antoinette Dracon (who had become enthralled and truly loyal to the gargoyle) and through her, took advantage of simmering tensions between the city's crime families and manipulated the gang war instigated by Dino Dracon following his release from prison. She also used Antoinette to approach Broadway and feed him information that she wanted the Manhattan Clan to receive so they would, inadvertently, help her in her larger plans. Then in May of 1997, she returned to her townhouse and used the last surviving page of the Grimorum's tracking spell to keep an eye on what the Manhattan Clan was up to before learning the fates of the Three Keys to Power and then identifying the Three New Keys to Power. Shortly after, Demona watched Goliath's Hearing on television as Judge Roebling delivered his ruling that gargoyles were sentient and deserving of "human" rights - but this did nothing to deter what she had planned. After the apparent death of Dino Dracon at the hands of his own father, Dominic, the war came to an end with Dominic Dracon now at the head of the Six Families. However, due to his advanced age, Dominic was no longer mentally the man he used be which allowed Antoinette to control him - and she in turn gave Demona complete control of New York City's underworld. And Coldstone, frustrated with Goliath surrendering control to humans, secretly joined Demona - promising to serve her cause as long as the clan remains unharmed. With this major victory accomplished, Demona now controlled New York City's criminal element and had a spy within the Manhattan Clan. ("Everywhere", "New Rules", "Cold Comfort")

In June, 1997, Demona travelled to Buenos Aires, Argentina and stole the lancehead of Gungnir from the collection of Anapaula Aguilar's husband. The following month, she met with Thailog and offered to sell him 1% of her shares of Nightstone Unlimited (giving him controlling interest) in exchange for him acquiring the the haft of Gungnir from the Illuminati. While Thailog was suspicious of her intentions, she played to his ego that she couldn't stand in the way of his plans, and wanting sole control of the company, Thailog agreed. Shortly afterwards, Demona had Antoinette Dracon attack the Eyrie Building with remote-piloted exo-frames while she snuck in and successfully stole Puck's flute from Owen Burnett. Coldstone later reported that Angela still wished to reconcile and invite Demona to her upcoming Commitment Ceremony which gave Demona a moment of pause before she chose to continue on with her plan. Not long after, Thailog delivered the haft and Demona handed her the share of Nightstone she agreed upon, but chose not to unite the haft with the lancehead as the resulting power surge could tip her hand. ("Questions", "Quo Vadis Cum Hoc?", "Acquisitions")

A memento of Angelika

Demona's quest for the Three New Keys to Power was briefly set aside when the Metropolitan Museum of Art's new exhibit, Vikings in Japan went on display. She broke into the museum to steal a Gold Locket of tremendous sentimental value. She also took Odin's Shield so that, sure enough, when the Manhattan Clan confronted her, they believed the shield to be her quarry and prevented her from taking it. During the battle, Demona injured Angela before escaping and returning home satisfied with the memento of her long deceased daughter, Angelika. ("A Prize Beyond Compare...")

Demona wields the Three New Keys to Power in 1997

Months later, Antoinette acquired the third of the New Keys to Power: Cleopatra's Necklace, purchasing it at an auction in Geneva before delivering it to Demona who then repaired Gungnir and united the Three Keys. With the Three Keys to Power in her possession, Demona cast a spell to enchant humans with Cleopatra's Necklace, to target every human on Earth with Gungnir, and to make them all too happy to follow her with Puck's Flute. With Coldstone and Antoinette Dracon at her side, Demona walked through the city from Gramercy Park towards the 23rd Precinct, enchanting humans on the way. She entered the precinct to take control of Elisa and present her with very specific instructions before she and Antoinette made their way to the Eyrie Building, enchanting Xanatos, Owen, and Fox upon reaching the castle. Demona then confronted Goliath on the battlements of the castle, forcing Xanatos, Fox, Owen, and even Elisa (who had more recently arrived) to bow to her. But Demona was not necessarily out to destroy humanity this time, but to rule over them - enchanting humans to obey gargoyles (with Demona elite among them) the world over - a plan she presented as a "compromise". But Goliath would hear none of it, horrified as Demona stole the humans' free will, to which she sighed that there was just no pleasing him. Demona made her escape after ordering Xanatos to cover her exit. ("Acquisitions", "Unequivocal Success", "Queen of All She Surveys")

Making her way to LaGuardia Airport, Demona enchanted an airplane's crew chief to commandeer a luxury plane so that she may spread her influence even faster before being pursued by the Manhattan Clan and their allies from the Mayan Clan. Demona ordered the humans present to attack the gargoyles but was pursued by Goliath, Coldstone, Coldfire, Jade, and Turquesa. But with the shells of the Coldduo forged by humans, and the Mayans wearing pendants fashioned by a human sorcerer, Demona seized control of them and used them to attack Goliath. But when Demona threatened to inflict unspeakable tortures upon Elisa, Goliath broke free and attacked, attempting to wrestle Puck's flute away from her - but it was not enough as Coldstone and Coldfire restrained him. Angela arrived and intervened, promising to embrace Demona if she changed her path but vowed to oppose her if she didn't. Angela grabbed hold of the necklace as Goliath held the spear, causing Demona's control to weaken to the breaking point when Goliath reminded Demona of her role in the Wyvern Massacre. Momentarily distracted, Turquesa (freed to due Demona's weakening control) grabbed the Spear and all three of the Keys were taken from her, and Demona was defeated. But she fled the area after her enchantment was lifted and the Three New Keys to Power were destroyed. ("Queen of All She Surveys")

Egwardo Demona Queen of All She Surveys.jpg

But, for Demona, the night was not a total defeat. When she had enchanted Elisa earlier, she ordered the detective to tranquilize Bronx and Fu-Dog and steal Egwardo. Elisa delivered the egg to Antoinette Dracon (whom the detective never saw) who then brought it to Demona. Now, with Coldstone banished from the Manhattan Clan (his treachery revealed) and at her side along with Antoinette, Demona held Egwardo in triumph - vowing to raise the hatchling as "a true gargoyle" to hate the humans and vie to destroy them along with any "false gargoyles" that stand against her and leaving the entire Manhattan Clan emotionally devastated. ("Queen of All She Surveys")

Beyond

Despite the foiling of her scheme, Demona will continue to plot the destruction of humanity with considerable bitterness. Altering the clan to suit her vision of what it should be like will still be a major goal. [20] Although Angela will try, presumably unsuccessfully, to turn Demona from her destructive course.

In 2014 Demona will be present at the first gathering of gargoyle sympathizers in five years. Her reasons and intentions are unknown. [21]

When the Space-Spawn invade Earth in 2198, however, Demona is faced with an even greater enemy to her kind than humans, and so accepts Samson's invitation to join the Resistance, making use of her assets (such as her knowledge of magic and her ability to turn into a human in the daytime). However, Demona is uncertain as to whether she will be able to fight on the side of the angels for long. The rest of the Resistance distrusts her as well, and initially she does not get along well with anyone. [22] This may be her last chance at redemption... or her final opportunity to annihilate the human race. [23]

At some point in the war against the Space-Spawn, Demona will join Nokkar, Zafiro, LXM-1057, and Guardian by going into outer space to hit the Space-Spawn in their own home. Demona would potentially look like the Demona of "Future Tense". [24]

Greg Weisman has hinted that eventually she will indeed have an epiphany, learn that she was responsible for her own misery and suffering, and undergo some sort of change of heart and/or possibly go a little mad. [25] He has also said that she will have two more great loves, but their identities are as yet unknown. [26] Possibly even three more great loves. [27]

Characteristics

Demona

Demona's battle visage in 1995.
Demona without her tiara in 1996

First and foremost, Demona is her own worst enemy. She has spent a thousand years alone, and that loneliness was a huge factor in creating the present day Demona. It has affected her to the point where, for a multitude of reasons, she even chose "ALONE" to be her access code during the climax of "City of Stone" Part Four.

At present, Demona continues to bitterly hate humans, and wants the entire species destroyed, despite the fact that she fully turns into one during the day (a gift from which she has received no insight). [28] But she hates some humans more than others, such as the Hunters, Macbeth, and especially Elisa Maza. She is aware of the detective's feelings for Goliath and his for Elisa, and is utterly jealous (deep down, she loves the Goliath of her imagination, but the real thing is a disappointment to her).

Besides, Elisa simply does not live up to Demona's beliefs about humans all being evil, traitorous, and hostile towards gargoyles, and that worries her even more. She also has strong hatreds for the Canmore Hunters, who have hounded her so often, and Macbeth, whom she still blames for the destruction of her clan in 1057 and his ongoing attempts to kill her. Although, it is worth mentioning that in the DVD audio commentary for "City of Stone" Part Four, Greg Weisman noted that Demona was "a little bit in love with [Macbeth]." [29]

Despite her bitter, genocidal hatred for humanity; Demona is not above allying herself with humans if she can use them to her advantage. Examples include David Xanatos (whom she gained weapons and opportunities from), Anton Sevarius (who created the CV-1000 carrier virus for her), and Antoinette Dracon (who gave her control of New York City's underworld).

Demona with a particle beam cannon in 1995

Her relationship with Thailog had little to do with Thailog personally, and more to do with his resemblance to Goliath, the contrast in his personality, and her desire to be with someone she believed could share her worldview (though this belief was likely a combination of Thailog's deception and wishful thinking as Thailog has never indicated that he holds any grudge or hatred towards humans as a species).

The one general exception to hatred in her heart at present is Angela, whom she has strong feelings for, but which as yet have not been enough to turn her from her path. Even the biological connection matters to Demona, although she would never admit to it, as such a thing is a human trait, and atypical to her species. [30] She will be aware that Samson is her descendant. [31]

She is aware of the Illuminati and regards them as a threat; they, in turn, regard her as a loose cannon. [32] They have had experience with her. ("Questions") [33]

While she is not fond of the Children of Oberon, she is not overtly hostile towards them either. An exception to this is the Weird Sisters, whom she despises, not for rational reasons but because they're someone else she can blame for her problems. [34]

During the Dark Ages, Demona and "Desdemona" were as "close as sisters who aren't actually as close as they think." [35] That said, she never considered "Desdemona" a threat to her relationship with Goliath, despite "Iago" insisting that was the case. [36] At present, Demona would love to bring Coldfire to her way of thinking, but failing that, Coldfire would fall into Demona's ever-increasing enemies list. [37]

Demona's hatred of humanity is still fueled in part by her repressed guilt. She knows deep down inside that she is responsible in part for the Wyvern Massacre, but is unwilling to consciously admit it, and perforce makes the human race her scapegoat, to avoid facing the blood on her hands. Unlike Macbeth, she is not suicidal. She possesses one "gift" that renders a considered suicide next to impossible. A stellar sense of self-deception. Nothing's ever her fault. Nothing's ever going to stop her. No one matters to her THAT much. (It's not true, but she believes it.) Angela's existence would also preclude suicide. Angela, in Demona's opinion, needs her too much. [38]

Demona in armor, wielding a sword in 1997.

Demona has also taken it upon herself to decide who is a true gargoyle and who is not. As of 1997, she considers any gargoyle who doesn't hate and vie to destroy humans as "false gargoyles". When she united the Three New Keys to Power, she used Gungnir to target all humans, and as the spear targeted anyone she chose, it aimed at the human-influenced elements of her enemies, which satisfied her biases. Thus the human-made robotic shells of Coldfire and Coldstone were subject to control. Likewise, she was able to control Jade and Turquesa due to their wearing of the pendants forged by a human sorcerer. She further believed that she was not in danger come sunrise, as in her mind, she is a true gargoyle always no matter what form she's in. However, try as she might to subject Goliath to that same control as he "reeked of humanity", her subconscious couldn't perceive him as anything but a gargoyle. In contrast, when Goliath pointed out her hypocrisy as "Dominique", her control over the Keys began to waver which gave Goliath and Angela an opening that led to her defeat. Despite her rhetoric, subconsciously Demona might not fit her own extreme standards on what is a "true gargoyle". ("High Noon", "Everywhere", "Queen of All She Surveys")

She also continues to have a strong craving for power, hoping that when she destroys humanity and gargoyles subsequently rule the world, she will rule over them. The Archmage taught her an appreciation of power. But it's doubtful she'd acknowledge that influence. [39]

As she escaped growing old, she doesn't understand aging anymore than Xanatos understands true immortality, and has no patience for it. [40] She even belittled Hudson for his age.

As far as a gargoyle's religious beliefs are concerned, Demona is "probably lapsed – or at least inattentive." [41] She also didn't consider it a priority to hold a Wind Ceremony for the massacred Sruighlea Cell, opting instead for vengeance on the humans.

At CONvergence 2011's Sex In Animation panel, Greg indicated that another of the many, many reasons for Demona's disposition was centuries of sexual frustration. [42] At CONvergence 2014's Blue Mug panel, Greg indicated that Demona sees herself as the type that does mate for life, and that she was celibate for the "vast majority" of her thousand years alone, and that she remained celibate with Thailog "for about three seconds."

Demona is currently immortal and unaging thanks to the spell that the Weird Sisters placed upon her in 1040. This spell also ensures that she can only die if she kills Macbeth or he kills her. Demona can still be temporarily killed, or wounded, however she won't suffer a catastrophic injury. If Macbeth is close enough at the time that such an event happens, he will feel her pain – and vice versa, thanks to the magical link between them. The same may also apply to feelings of pleasure. [43]

Demona sleeping prior to Puck's gift.

Demona is a cunning and resourceful opponent, dangerous warrior and a skilled sorceress. However, her anger and hatred have a tendency to interfere with her plans; she will in the heat of battle make the mistake of using her laser cannon as a club rather than firing it, for example, and she will often alienate her allies or betray them, thus losing their assistance permanently. This has, fortunately, resulted in Demona's efforts to destroy humanity all failing.

Demona is also very mono-focused on her goals. She has no hobbies or interests, and focuses her efforts on research, study, practicing her sorcery, making investments, and other steps toward her goal. [44]

Physically, Demona is an attractive female gargoyle with a shock of red hair and pale blue skin. She is usually armed with a mace or a particle beam cannon or both. [45] She usually wears a gold tiara, a pair of earrings, an armband and an anklet as decorative jewelry. She allowed Lexington to usone of her gold armbands to divert the electrical current of the bars in the cell of the Hunters' Airship so that they could escape, but replaced the armband with another soon afterward. She also seems to favor midriff baring halter tops that hang off of one shoulder. Although, in the late eleventh century, she began wearing chainmail and armor over her standard outfit. And in 1920, she wore a pair of gauntlets on her forearms. She is "Lefty's" biological younger sister. [46]

Demona currently resides alone in a townhouse in Gramercy Park, with appropriate decorations such as a door-knocker shaped like a demon's head. She has owned the house for decades. [47]

When encountering Angela in 1996, she claimed to have been aware of any surviving gargoyle clans up to this time. Besides the Avalon Clan, she likely didn't know about the one from Guatemala. She may know about the London Clan. While it is uncertain either way if she is aware or unaware of the Ishimura Clan.[48]

Dominique Destine

Demona and Dominique Destine's musculoskeletal structure in 1996

At present, Demona turns into a human during the daytime thanks to a magical gift that Puck bestowed upon her, turning human at dawn and reverting back to a gargoyle at sunset. The process is very painful, and Demona's one consolation for this is that if Macbeth is close enough, he can share her pain. Even in her human form, Demona does not see herself as a human and continues to think of herself as a gargoyle, refusing to consider the possibility that the differences between gargoyles and humans are largely superficial. Whether Demona would produce eggs (as is usual for a gargoyle) or give birth to live offspring (like a human) would depend which of the two forms she was in at the time. [49] Demona will still have this feature by 2198, although her human alias by that period is unknown to us as yet. She also prefers to get a few hours of sleep during the day as Dominique, rather than sleep at night (and although Puck's spell of transformation compensates somewhat, the lack of sleep still doesn't improve her mental outlook). [50] And, according to Greg Weisman at the 2006 Blue Mug-a-Guest, Dominique "sleeps in the nude."

Following Puck's gift of becoming a human during the day, Demona took full advantage of it and tailored her human identity to suit her purposes. Befitting her thirst for power, the human name she chose for herself, Dominique Destine, stands for divine destiny. She has used the identity to trick Macbeth into marrying her, to be the public face of Nightstone Unlimited (albeit for a time), and to get into places that Demona can't whether disguised as a police officer or a collector of antiquities.

Her human form is that of an attractive red-haired, green-eyed woman, with a striking resemblance to her gargoyle form (close enough, in fact, that the musculoskeletal structure of her human head and her gargoyle head, according to a computer program of Robyn Canmore's, are virtually identical). As Dominique, she also keeps her fingernails trimmed to long, sharp points, giving her a slightly off-putting appearance as if she's not all human. Like all female gargoyles, her eyes glow red when she is angered, however, even as a human, if she gets angry enough, Puck's spell of transformation may glitch and her eyes will glow. [51]

She drives a red corvette.

Lady Macbeth

Ironically, Demona's character is a lot closer to William Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth than Gruoch was. As Lady Macbeth goads her husband into killing the elderly King Duncan, and taking his throne, Demona urges Goliath to seize leadership of the clan from Hudson. Unlike the Macbeth of the play, Goliath does no such thing, however, Hudson steps down and Goliath takes his place with Demona becoming second-in-command.

Adding to the irony, Demona briefly marries Macbeth in Paris. On top of this, in the unmade "The Weird Macbeth" story, several members of the cast would have been trapped by the Weird Sisters in a production of Shakespeare's Macbeth with Demona in the role of Lady Macbeth.

Hypothetical Pregnancy

Other than Angela (and to some extent Delilah), Demona has never had any biological children and never will. [52] [53][54][55] However, considering both Puck's gift and her immortality, Greg Weisman has been asked about a hypothetical pregnancy multiple times, and he has theorized that if Demona were to become pregnant, the child would transform inside her as the sun rises and sets and feel the pain of her transformations. [56] The species of said child would depend on the timing of her pregnancy, but most likely, Demona would lay an egg, before "Dominique" had the chance to come to full term. [57] Of course, it's also possible that she would miscarry. [58] But, on the huge and very unlikely assumption that "Dominique" would choose to have sex, "she's smart enough, even as a human, to use birth control". [59]

Apocrypha

Gargoyles Meets the Spectacular Spider-Man Meets Young Justice

In her Dominique Destine alias, Demona made use of several of the inmates at Ravencroft, including Dominic Dracon, Eddie Brock, John Jameson, and Cletus Kasady to uncover the head of the Spear of Destiny for her, and then united it with the spear-shaft (which she hired smugglers to bring her from Brazil), as the first step of her latest scheme. She used the Spear to restore the inmates' powers, once again transforming John Jameson into Colonel Jupiter, and re-bonding Eddie to his symbiote, unleashing Venom once more. She also gifted the serial killer, Kasady, with his own symbiote dubbing him Carnage.

She next allied herself with L. Thompson Lincoln alias Tombstone (the deposed Big Man of Crime), and offered him a chance to regain his empire in exchange for the services of the Tinkerer, who re-built five of Mysterio's Homunculi to assist her.

Later on, thanks to the escaped Dr. Octopus and Electro, she was able to enter Norman Osborn's vault at OsCorp and seize her true quarry, the Crown of Thorns. With both the crown and the spear, Demona planned to unleash Armageddon upon the human race, not to mention force Elisa Maza to joyfully commit suicide. But she was defeated by both Goliath and Spider-Man, and Dominique Destine found herself a patient at Ravencroft... at least until the sun went down. ("Religious Studies 101: A Handful of Thorns")

After being captured by Jackal and Hyena under Vandal Savage's orders, Savage offered Demona a seat in his secret organization, The Light, wishing for her to replace the incapacitated Ra's al Ghul. Demona is dismissive of forming an alliance with the largely human organization, though Savage claims that her attempts to exterminate the human race only help to weed out its unfittest members. He also offers her a "signing bonus" to ensure her cooperation.

While the Light provides a distraction, Demona infiltrates the castle, tranquilizes Bronx and Fu-Dog, and locate the subject of Savage's "signing bonus": Egwardo, who she intends to kidnap and raise as her own. Nashville succeeds at holding Demona off, buying enough time for Angela and Tigress to arrive, both having realized that the other supervillains are merely serving as a distraction. Tigress manages to disarm Demona, leaving mother and daughter to hold a verbal and emotional standoff. Demona flees, unable to bring herself to kill Angela to get to Egwardo.

Vandal Savage and Queen Bee both welcome Demona into the Light. ("Recruits")

The Goliath Chronicles

After failing to destroy humanity on the night of the Hunter's Moon, Demona resurfaced and allied herself with a man known as the Assassin. She hired him to kill Goliath as part of a plan to convince Angela that Demona has reformed. However, the Assassin, who was working with the Quarrymen, ruined the deception, and Angela once again felt betrayed, something for which Demona felt true remorse. ("Generations")

Gargoyles (Marvel Comics)

Appearances: "Fiends In High Places", "Venus In Stone", "Venus Rising", "The Pack Attacks", "Terror In Times Square", "The Egg And I"

Demona in her "Vampirella" cosplay get-up.

As these non-canonical stories take place during and after the first season, Demona is allied with Xanatos, although loosely. ("Fiends In High Places") She assists him in stealing DNA from Goliath and Elisa to create the composite clone, Venus. When she learns of a weapon that Xanatos is developing that can turn people to stone called the Medusa Device, she steals it but is soon defeated by Goliath. ("Venus In Stone", "Venus Rising")

Next, she allied herself with the Triad, a Chinese crime syndicate who worshiped her as a goddess. They engaged in a scheme to use a lightning bolt to hatch a gargoyle egg that the Triad held in their possession for centuries... I know, I know, just go with it. This scheme was also foiled by Goliath. ("Terror In Times Square", "The Egg And I")

Production Background

Voice Actor: Marina Sirtis

"We had a character named Dakota who had been a hero, sort of the leader actually; and she felt kind of dull. But when we turned her into Demona and made her a villain, suddenly she wasn't dull."
- Greg Weisman, CONvergence 2014.
An early Demona design by Greg Guler. Frank Paur ditched the ponytail when he thought she should have "angrier" hair.
Frank Paur's first pass on Demona. He was exploring how to simplify the design for animation and better familiarize himself with her "rather unique personality."
Human Demona. Production sketch by Frank Paur.

Demona evolved from a gargoyle in the comedy development named Georgette. Though she wasn't the leader, Georgette was good at coming up with workable plans and pulling the other gargoyles tails out of the fire. Georgette was later promoted to leader and renamed "Dakota." She was smart and fearless, but ultimately a little too intense for a comedy series. And dull. In the final comedy development pitch, she was renamed "DeMona" and became the only gargoyle to side with the series' main villain. She survived into the final action-drama pitch as essentially the same character.

Other names suggested for Demona when Gary Krisel felt the name "Demona" was too on the nose were Angelica, Carve, Dagger, Shale, Slate, Malachite, Anthracite, Gelignite, Javelin, Fury, and Electra. "Angelica" was almost an alias for Demona in the pilot and then again in "Sanctuary" for her human name before settling on Dominique Destine. Variations such as "Angel", "Angelique" and even "Dierdre" were considered. When the production team came up with the notion of gargoyles traditionally not having names, it solved the issue with Demona's name sounding too villainous and the notion that a human would name her made "Demona" less silly and more chilling.

Greg Weisman and Marina Sirtis both have different stories on how the latter was cast in the role. According to Weisman, Sirtis was the first actor to read for Demona and she nailed it right then and there. Marina, on the other hand claims that she had to read and audition for the role several times before it was given to her.

At CONvergence 2014, when asked by a Gargoyles fan about how she approached the role of Demona, Marina Sirtis noted that one of the reasons she identifies with Demona is that she's a very "in the now" person, who doesn't really engage in worrying about the future. Demona, as Sirtis puts it, rather HAS to live "in the now," simply to function. Genuine, honest self-reflection on her past and future would pretty much destroy her. [60]

In a 2017 interview with AV Club, Sirtis said "[Demona] was misunderstood. [...] She was kind of the only one of the gargoyles who hung on to what the humans had done to the gargoyles. She was the one that was like the walking history of pain and betrayal. On a certain level, I think she represented [...] someone like Native Americans or the First Nations peoples up in Canada or aborigines in Australia, whose lives and lands and everything was destroyed by the others who came in, as there were still people in those communities who were fighting for their equality and their rights. So she just chose really not the smartest way to do it, but like I said, it came from a place of truth for her." [61]

In 2024, on an episode of Voices from the Eyrie, Greg Weisman revealed that Dynamite Entertainment considers Demona to be in the top two most popular characters in the Gargoyles franchise; the only one who might beat her is Goliath, but they're not sure and that Demona might beat him. [62]
